How The Shaolin Temple Made Me Flexible

2020 ж. 12 Нау.

In this video I will talk about how I stretched during my time at the Shaolin Temple. The training routine changed with the masters so it wasnt like this all the time, but this mostly refers to my first year where getting more flexible was the number one priority.

Not to mention selling yourself with Avatar Aang's head and patronizing disstrack vibe eyes.

    • Some people are just able to handle more pain than others. I can punch a wall at full strength (and I'm a natural born big boi so my muscles are already kind of large even though they're not well built) and I can for the most part go on with my day despite almost having lost the feeling in my hand. But I've also trained with people who are much stronger than me but avoid using punches in spars because they can't deal with the pain in their knuckles at all. You can apply that logic to the rest of the human body.

    • It might seem correct, but doesn't apply always. I can love meat, but hate the way most slaughter houses treat their animals. So I try to buy meat only from those that are much more reasonable. Shaolin Monks might be super cool, but forcing a child to go through it is literally child abuse and indoctrination. Result shouldn't be then "oh well". It should be more like "Ok but is it worth it? Do we want this then? Can we change a thing, just slightly for the better?" Like I don't think you need to be able to do a split in 1 month. Is it not viable to do a much less brutal technique, but that would take 2 months? I'd rather take 2 months, than have my muscles ripped appart.

  • "Stretching pain is a different kind of pain" I couldn't agree more. I started learning Kung Fu at the age of 5, and I remember those techniques that the teacher used. In the box split, she kept kicking my feet farther and farther and I wasn't allowed to lean down 😅 (just like he said in the video and showed) so yeah, it is a very funny memory, not back then but now yes. Also when you have to sit up straight while doing the normal split and the teacher goes behind you and sits down on your thigh behind. Those are the horror stories from my Kung Fu classes that I tell my friends and they see it as torture... which is basically right but I didn't think about it like that back then.

    • Can you still do the front/scissor split and box split NOW? There is a 78 y.o. dude that still can raise his leg vertical straight up above his head with flattened foot at the top. I have been practicing that for 10 years plus, still only at 60 degree angle, cannot straightened it up.. and I am 63 y.o. That senior 78 y.o. with chubby body beat me hands down.

      @WhiteDraqon@WhiteDraqon2 жыл бұрын
    • @@WhiteDraqon are you dumb? stretching hurts so much because youre litterally tearing the muscle fiber by fiber there is almost no injury unless you are fucking your body up way too fast like how you would do if you tried to lift weights that are too heavy, tendons and joints have nothing to do with this the only thing that can happen is you can tear a muscle if you go too extreme

  • You can achieve any flexibility you want, without pain. You just have to practice every day. Breathing IS key, as Ranton says, by breathing in oxygen, it allows your muscles to stretch more, but the "pain" is micro to full on tearing of your muscles. Also, your muscles should be warm, and you should be starting to break a sweat from movement PRIOR to starting to stretch. Can using pain increase your flexibility? Yes, and do they recover? Yes, but while they are torn, you are more susceptible to more serious injury. Just practice every day, when you are in a stretch, hold if for a couple of minutes, and as you take deep breaths in and relax, you will be able to go further in your stretch without pain, and everyday you will go a little further. You should, during that 2 min, go to the point it starts to hurt, but no further, and in 3-4 weeks if you are young and already fit, you will achieve what you want, if you are older and less fit, it could take a couple of months, but you will get there, barring any disability or other issue that otherwise prevents it.

    @DK-zu6tt@DK-zu6tt3 жыл бұрын
    • You don't even need a full minute. Sport science studies show that holding a position has vastly decreasing benefits after 30 seconds continuously. Just make sure to use a stopwatch, cause 30 seconds in a proper stretch can feel like 2 minutes.

  • That question about abuse is the reason why when I was in the Marines we all agreed with our Senior Drill Instructor that it's better to just keep quiet about how we're trained for the most part around Civies. Where some civilian see's abuse, we see a correction. It's why you only ever see the bits where a DI yells at Recruits, cause if they ever saw the real thing they'd never understand. When bullets are flying you don't get a safe space, there's no stress cards. You don't get to think, you act. And the Discipline they taught us is absolutely crucial, the way it's done woks. Its only so you can carry heavy gear and walk long stretch’s, maybe some of it is for stopping you from running out of cover or reacting irrationally but I doubt its necessary for them to train you so hard.

Is what I call light stretching, basically I'm laying on a bed and the physiotherapist pushes and blocks my leg upwards, it's painful but after some time it's bearable. 2. What I call the hard stretching, I'm laying on the side and the physiotherapist sits on the bed and takes my leg and pushes it in direction of it's stomach in rotation, kind of. It's so painful... After some time I start to shaking a bit, it's not bearable but every time I do it I resist as much as the physiotherapist does it. I never make a sound.

  • Awesome video. Yes splits of both types are very important and may take time to achieve. The reason why the "weak" will break, and why are they "weak", is because they simply have one or more muscle and or fascia imbalances, same with back pains and neck pains, hips pains and shoulder pains. Address these imbalances and proper flexibility increases and posture can be achieved.

      @affalee8216@affalee82163 жыл бұрын
    • @@affalee8216 Ok, this is gonna be a long one. The type of gymnastics that most people are familiar with are the rhythmic ones-the types you see girls dancing on the mat with batons & ribbons or just by themselves, THAT one requires a hell lot of flexibility to do, no doubt about it. BUT, if you were to lack strength, your movements would look clumsy instead of graceful. After that, there's the artistic types, the ones done on beams, vaults, bars, floor horses, still rings, just places that are generally tight, small, and most probably hanging mid-air, ESPECIALLY those of men compete in, flexibility takes a backseat. being flexible would make the performer look beautiful, but without adequate strength, they won't even be able to move in those places. Then there's the trampoline. flexibility is still important, but lacking strength would make it very difficult to bounce around & maintain your shit. & then, there's the group ones. flexibility requirement varies depending on the arrangement or repertoire, but you'd most probably need to lift SOMEONE ELSE up into the air, or you being lifted into the air. whatever your position, strength would be paramount in this case. you won't be able to lift someone, or you won't be able to keep your balance well, if you were to lack strength. flexibility, on the other hand, may hardly be required, if you're the one at the bottom. As you can see, flexibility requirement wold vary, but ALL types require a good amount of strength, some even more so. don't let their generally lithe form fool you, as they actually pack A LOT of power despite NOT being bulky. a decent gymnast could easily knock the living daylights out of any average person with the right technique, because they already have the physicality, specifically the strength, to do so. Speaking of weightlifting, one misconception is that gymnasts don't do weightlifting, but in reality, that really depends. in some of the types mentioned & positions practiced, weightlifting is actually CRUCIAL, as they'd actually need that much extra strength to do what they do.

  • This is BY FAR so damn true. I can't stress that enough. Forget about learning Punching and Kicking techniques. If you don't have flexibility YOU WILL struggle with even the basics. I started Tae Kwon Do very late in life (Age 35) and I've spent a few years hard gaming and doing artwork and that basically destroyed any flexibility I may had prier to that and I am paying for it now. Still since I started TKD I am struggling big time to have both side and box splits and I can tell you, not having close or full splits will kill your basic techniques. And YES, I've pushed my self to do a lot of things, but stretching... No matter how or what you do IT WILL HURT. There is no way around it. With that said, My flexibility has gotten better. But sitting down for hours on in WILL DESTROY YOUR BODY. I really hope that I achieve my flexibility by the end of 2021. I really do. Ankle injury (from a year ago and still healing) and flexibility has held me back for far too long.

  • Suggestion -> I'd love for you to go through a comparison of the martial arts that you're proficient or knowledgeable enough about to talk about. For people new to martial arts, I'd imagine that making a small spreadsheet of sorts (can just be you saying it out loud in the video) about which martial arts correlates best with which goals, would be invaluable to those that would benefit from the information. Keep up the great work, I'm enjoying your videos very much
