Euronymphing has been around for decades now, but had a surge of popularity in recent years. However in competition circles it has continued to evolve, with competitors striving for advantage with innovations in gear and techniques. In this episode on the glorious Eucumbene River in the NSW Snowy Mountains, Jared and I take you through some of the latest developments and how to apply them in your everyday fly fishing.

  • Awesome peachy, glad to see it wasn't just me having a tough time in the snowies in the low clear stuff recently!

    • Thanks mate! Yeah it was definitely tough. Might have been fishing better a bit higher up maybe, but it's definitely been a bit harder this summer than the last couple of years before. :)

  • Tough conditions lads, however, a marvellous day out, just the same. If you were there at the time of the FFA, NSW comp., it's a wonder our paths did not cross. Shame . . . , given the weather demanded such things, you may have been the beneficiary of one of my extra long and very cooling, G & T's, Steve. 😃 Nice piece, well done. 👍

    • Haha! Thanks mate, yes a G&T might have been appropriate…. I’m surprised we didn’t run into you at the Snow Goose…. ;)

  • Love the euro nymph styles. Overall I find it more productive then traditional methods. Also, I find it more adaptable to handle different weather conditions which is useful if you have limited fishing days. Recently fished the Thredbo and got a few, fishing one fly in low water. Thanks for the video.

    • Thanks Ian! Yes it is often more productive than other methods in the right water. Love the Thredbo! Thanks for watching. :)

  • I just fished here over the Easter weekend and my gosh it was difficult. I went to three different areas along the river and no luck. Glad I wasn’t the only one struggling with the river being so low

    • Yeah I hadn't seen it that low, I'm sure it has been but we have been a bit spoiled with the good seasons we've had in recent years.....

    • @@PeachyFlyFishing although I didn’t have any luck outside of trolling the lake I will definitely be going back towards the end of the year when the season opens up. Until then it’s back to fishing Murray Cod

  • Superb skills - wonderful scenery - and great photography, with excellent audio - thanks for taking us along - what rods were you testing if you don’t mind sharing - I do love my gear, and am always keen to see what the pros are fishing with - and what their opinion is of their gear… we are fishing at such a wonderful time in history as there are so many wonderful rods (and reels, and trout lines, and tippet) available to us - spoilt for choice…

  • Awesome Peachy. Very similar conditions when I fished the euc 6 weeks ago. The whole system needs some rain. I fished an alpine creek further up the on the same day. Shallow water spooky fish!!! Great fun! Wondering what your euro leader set up was? I got some sempe and Adams materials earlier in the season. . The ceramic coated stuff. Was sceptical about it. But have to say it’s brilliant…definitely adds some precision and distance to my euro casting. Great feel. Really only used it for micro leaders so far. Have some more experimenting to do with tapering with these materials. ( ie building my own French leaders and mono rigs). Ain’t cheap…so all in good time.

    @anthonyclark6118@anthonyclark6118Ай бұрын
    • Thanks mate! Yeah here's hoping for some rain in the snowies so we get a good late season....as far as leader goes, it was 0.18 green color line (very similar to sempe), and then rio and trouthunter fluorocarbon in 7X and 8X. Leader is double rod length so 22' total, about 16' of colorline and the rest in tippet. I haven't tried the Adams stuff, do you find it better than sempe or similar? Was that from Tactical Fly Fisher? :)

      @PeachyFlyFishing@PeachyFlyFishingАй бұрын
    • @@PeachyFlyFishing I got the sempe from TFF. The Adams was from source, but got it mailed to a mate working Europe, who was coming home. I would say the Adams is slightly better. A little smoother to feel and ‘sensitive’. But probably personal preference thing. Both definitely improve my casting range compared to the monos I was using. Have darn enjoyed my micro leader adventures this season. 6x even 8x tippets…5x feels like overkill now!!! Definitely a deadly way to fish…but throwing dry droppers with it in super clear water…I know I’m working hard on my approach skills atm. I noticed a lot of Cormorants in the lower sections of the euc and up near Kiandra when I was there 6 weeks ago. Think they clear the trout out! See any? Btw. Do you or Jared have any experience with the multi length euro rods sold by hanak or Greys/Hardy…think vision do one too. They come with different 2nd and 3rd sections where you can scale from 9 ft 6 to 11ft 2 ( approx).

      @anthonyclark6118@anthonyclark6118Ай бұрын
    • That's awesome mate, yeah the micro leaders are fantastic. I've been really enjoying fishing 8X recently too, the drifts and sink rate are so good! I didn't see any cormorants this time on the river, but they were down in the lake at the Portal where it flows in. Lots of pelicans up at Denison though, I'm sure they are eating their fair share too. As far as the multi length rods, no sorry I don't have any experience with those. But this new generation of 11' #2 weights are really really good.... :)

    • G'day Matt, the nymphs are size #18 pheasant tails with a 2.5mm tungsten bead. Tippet is 7X fluorocarbon, leader is 0.18mm eaux vives color line in Green. The dry fly for the dry dropper setup is a size #14 split wing cdc mayfly. Was there any other info you needed?

  • Did not see anything there that would make me go out and buy a 2wt 11 foot stik. In those conditions would leave the river be.

    @malcolmbiddle2681@malcolmbiddle2681Ай бұрын
    • Thanks Malcolm, yes the river was a bit low for what we were trying to do, but it's a decent walk down there from the cars and we couldn't see the water level until we got down there. We would have had an easier time fishing a dry fly or dry dropper rod with it that low, but we were there to try out these rods in particular and shoot a video on them, so that's what we had at hand! A little bit more flow and depth might have shown the advantages of these rods better.
