6 Ways Iron Man is Cooler Than Captain America
The rivalry between iron Man and Captain America has reached a fever pitch with Captain America: Civil War. And in the movies (Winter Soldier, Avengers, etc.) and comics both are incredibly effective leaders. What is undeniable though, is that people follow them for different reasons, because Iron Man is much cooler than Captain America. In fact, Captain America can be kind of a dweeb
In honor of Captain America: Civil War I wanted to look at the actors behind these 2 iconic characters. Because whether Iron Man has bled into Robert Downey Junior or vice versa, the fact is that they have both mastered the art of witty banter and cool demeanor.
Chris Evans and Captain America, still make great leaders but in a very different way. They're much more good-hearted and likable. So let's take a look at how some tiny little habits make Robert Downey Junior and Tony Stark come across as cool while Chris Evans and Captain America come off as something else entirely.
We'll explore the different ways that they use sarcasm, joke, and pay attention to other people. And in the end hopefully we can resolve this Civil War peacefully ;-)

  • This all comes down to playing with status (see Keith Johnstone's book "Impro"). Both men are confident, but one asserts high status at every opportunity, and one enjoys elevating other peoples' status (either by lowering his own, or raising the other person's) I think RJD enjoys being high status. He's been a movie star for a lot longer and is used to it. Chris Evans is more modest and humble. I think their individual personality traits had a lot to do with the Marvel roles they each got.

  • I think an interesting point to note here is that being very famous adds an entirely new benefit to these styles of communication. These concepts are certainly applicable for anyone, but it's important to remember that you will not be viewed as a "prize" to be won over by the people around you automatically, and acting in these ways (especially like Robert) is very likely to make most people just think you're arrogant. Yes, it can be done, but it's insanely difficult for an average person to find that balance. Robert has the benefit of his fame doing a bit of that balancing for him, because people already want him to like them before even entering the conversation. So, if you want to be the distracted, envied, cool guy - tone it down, and be super careful.

He(she) is generally not as much appointed as recognized and chosen. Whereas a boss usually is more likely to tell you what to do not do it themselves, and they will always be placed in that position or self-appointed, delegating tasks to those under his/her charge.

For example, he said that RDJ's method of looking away from you when talking makes you want to work harder to keep his attention or walk away feeling like "I hope he likes me"... it would be quite the opposite for me. If someone wasn't directly looking at me and make me feel like they're not interested in talking to me I will just excuse myself and not waste my time in the company of someone who refuses to show me the same respect and attention I give them. They can reach out when they're ready to give me their full attention. I default to Chris Evan's and Emilia Clarke's style.

  • Well researched and super interesting. I imagine it’s pretty hard, especially the older you are, to change your personality enough to affect real change in your interactions with people imho. These mechanisms and skills come together to help you manage your life at a young age. For example I am a younger of two brothers. Some of my mannerisms developed to diffuse tension with my brother, whereas he was often trying to influence me, good or bad. Now I have children and see those behaviors, and others, based off their life experiences.

The difference between Chris Evans and Cap are that CE is an ISFJ and Cap is an ISTJ. Chris cares way more about your feelings and what you think about him, and your comfort level, than does Cap. Cap's F and T scores aren't as far apart as Tony's F and T scores are. This is why so many say that Cap is so dull, while people largely say that Chris Evans is so cool, or is just the nicest guy. Cap is more duty focused, Chris is people focused, which is generally more likable when compared apples to apples.RDJ and Tony Stark do not suffer any such distinctions when compared apples to apples.

We are taking it at face value that this is their personality at award show and late nite interviews. I personally believe they are in character when the lights are on. It would be more interesting to see regular people using these tricks and skills in real life, not watching people who are trained in creating the persona that they want you to see. Your testimonials are awesome. Maybe you could interview those people so we can see how they look using you advice. People who are not trained as actors or showman.

  • So I was just watching a couple of interviews with RDJ and Tom Holland for Spiderman (especially on Kimmel), and I was remembering this video. But I thought how interesting it is how different RDJ was in these interviews ... he seemed to be using his charisma to almost continuously push focus onto Tom Holland (who is himself pretty charming and charismatic) and he was much more open about laughing at his jokes etc. I thought that might also be an interesting study as well, how he may use his draw of the audience to actually benefit the other guy in an interview when he wants to. He could easily have dominated but you can see how giving he is to Tom Holland, and I think that translates into Tom Holland's relaxed confidence as well? It's maybe similar to what you were saying Chris Evans does, but I just found the contrast really interesting in this case.
