  • SUMMARY • Summaries ○ Check the Summary part of the textbook ○ Make a test out of it - Fill-In the Blanks § Blanks - KEYWORDS • Reading in "Layers" ○ Read the first sentence. § Because it contains the topic sentence § How about the rest? □ Those are details ○ Read any sentence with a bold print. § It serves its purpose, that's why it's bold. ○ Read any other sentences that seems important. • Outlining ○ Break down the topics. ○ Connect them. ○ Use Acronyms. ○ OUTLINING is BETTER than READING IN LAYERS. WHY? § OUTLINING is applicable in General, Reading in Layers may depend on what you're reading. In outlining, it makes it easier to remember them as the information are broken down, categorized, and connected to each other. That is how humans make remembering easier, CONNECTION. Plus, acronyms make it more easier.

  • So 1. make blanks in a summary, redo them and do all of them 2. Reading in Layers! just for previews i. Read 1st sent of each para ii. read any sent with bold print iii. read any stuff that seems important 3. Outlining. Take out everything important, create outlines of it, like abrevs and shorterners.

  • First Tip: Go to the summary at the end of the chapter (almost all textbooks have summaries at the end of each chapter) and take a photocopy of it. White out most of the keywords. Basically, you’ve created a quiz for yourself. Make about five copies of it. Test yourself with your self-made quiz when you’re done reading the chapter and while you’re studying for the test. You’ll see yourself improve each time you take the quiz. On the other hand, if you had just read the summary five times, you would have made much less progress from the first time you read it to the last.
