If you think you've seen it all, hang on. Clayton Camp, who's the VP at Kern Machinery in Bakersfield had his Service supervisor install one of the John Deere crate motors into his 1969 2500 GMC truck. This thing looks better than factory, with some serious upgrades to the drive train. It's part of our Back to Life series. If you like car/truck builds, make sure to follow and sub our page. We have a H&S Body Works Back to Life playlist just for builds. H&S does some of the best builds in the Western United States. We've got some really cool stuff coming for gear heads.
Great build! My uncle owned a Kubota dealership back in the late 70s. He and my dad decided they needed a small service truck for the tractors. The winter on 78 my dad laid out the plans for that truck. He found a 74 model Toyota pickup and added a 30hp 3 cylinder Kubota diesel to the truck, then made the adapter plate for the Toyota 5speed manual. Ordered a reading service bed for the truck and painted the entire truck Kubota orange. It was completed in time for me to ride in it on my first day of kindergarten in the fall of 79. My uncle retired and closed the dealership in the mid 80s and my dad kept the truck. The drivetrain is now in its second Toyota body but still going. Top speed 71mph @52mpg.
You should send these guys history photos and a video!
And binoculars on the passenger seat just in case you want to pass the car in front of you
That's what everyone needs vehicles that get 52 mpg !!
I’d love to see that jewel, thanks for sharing.
Would love to see a video on it as well! Sounds amazing!
Meanwhile hundreds of modern John Deeres are broken down with software lockouts forcing immense cost of repairs on farms and ranches. I used to love JD, now I believe the whole outfit can rot in HELL for their financial abuse through software lockouts of the ag industry.
Truth spoken. More yet if the equipment has to be trucked to a distant dealer
Exactly my friend... Farmers dont have time to wait for a dealer to take two weeks or more to fix it.. If I cant fix it myself and get back to work to put in or put up my crop, I dont need it.. Leasing is such a pain in the ass anymore, am about to buy some more older equipment, and keep my hard earned money.. ✌♥️🇺🇸
Yeah it straight robbery. I'm glad people are talking about this. This has to be known before somone sinks there ship with a half a million dollar yard weight.
They have a new program where a farmer can buy the software, edl, and computer
Seems like a segway to re-enslave and lose personal rights to own property. In general the electronics industry seems to be more USSR secret where the olden days of purchasing a device with the schematics stapled to the interior case are gone in regards to being a general expectation. Now, there's proprietary firmware, hidden chip processes, software that is licensed and not owned, and some other concepts conning.
I have done two conversations using John Deere engines, turned out well and my customers where quite happy with them,
My grandfather has a 77 f100 with a 2 cylinder jd 60 in it. He still drives it.
How do you come up with a flywheel that works?
conversation 🤣
@@bradoliver9475 right,! Any body can do a conversation.
What a beautiful truck, it's truly a work of art.
This build reminds me of something Chip Foose said... he said the biggest complement is when the build is so clean and everything is just right, people ask, "looks good but what did you do?" That rig looks like it rolled off the assembly line like that. Amazing work.
That’s probably the most beautiful truck I’ve ever seen. Love the innovation and blend of 1969 and 2022. Well done guys!
How do they get something like this to pass emission standards - especially in California? Because it's a collector's item?
"Every Saturday for a year"... "Once a month" 😂
One weekend a month and two weeks a year...
@@easydoz1 ha ha, been there done that - never again. lol
The Gentleman that is the lead fabricator/engineer for that build has industrial talents far and above the best in the business. That's a spectacular build. He's one in a million!
Wish they would have put a pre emission engine in it.
Well it is in California
No worries of emissions
Why? the pre emissions 4045 didnt make half the power of common rail engine

That truck is a work of art, and her builder is a true artist. Simply amazing!
That is a fantastic installation, looks like a OEM installation. Great to see such professional workmanship. Well done.
Even John Deere employees would rather have old vehicles
Exactly... John Deere is one of the worst companies to Deny right to repair, along with Ford.
in 1970 a john deere factory in the quad city area had a chevy C60 rollback truck that blew up the 292 6cyl . they installed a turbo charged 404 john deere engine from a 4320 farm tractor with a 5spd /w 2spd axle. i saw this truck in 1973 when it was used to deliver a transmission assembly for a 4430 overnight .
404 was one of the best Deere ever built
@@michaelvrooman5681 This 4 cylinder or the 6.8 L would be my choice and the 4 valve makes for a powerful engine with much less weight.
That’s awesome, the engineering, fabrication, and mechanical work involved is second to none.
My dad spent years taking John deere motors out and putting in Detroit’s and Cummins back in them
Your dads a legend!
No he didn't!
Wasn't there a company back in the day that put 318 Detroits in one of the deeres pretty sure they modified one for John deere for testing
@@rocketsnhotrods9022 no they did it for more power dad put 238/318 Detroit’s in 4020-4520-4620-5020 and some mass. He put 855 Cummins in 8630/8650/8640/8850 he did about 500 of these conversions when asked why he did it he would always say because I can
Thats pretty cool I'd like to have one of them 4020s with that cummins in it
Love the job, but I think I was looking forward to hearing it run and driving it on the roads.
The owner sounds like a very nice feller but the builder sounds like he would be hard to get along with.
My thoughts as well
I’d say the man that has since retired is the true builder
Yeah seems like it to me too. I had already thought he kinda acts like the guy is stupid!
Arrogance just pours out of the guy in the black shirt for sure.
Look up right to repair associated with John deer you probably have to be difficult to work there
GMC is my favorite truck and that body style is a classic. All the work done to make that engine work in it looks like it is top notch! Two American classics melded together, Outstanding!
this is one of the most beautiful trucks I've ever seen. Really nice combination and workmanship.
I did the reverse. I put a 6-cylinder VW turbo diesel engine in my Nuffield tractor.
Nice
@Jordon Carlson Yes they are in America! They were used in old Volvo 240, 740 and 940.
@@nicostenfors5690 far as I'm tracking, in the US it was a I6 diesel only sold in the 240 for a couple years in the 80s. They're complete unicorns to find these days.
@@UpToSpeedOnJaguar Yes it's a D24. Found in Volvo 240/740/940 and VW LT vans. A little bit easier to find in Europe.
I've often joked about recycling a Mercedes OM616/617 engine for generator use, myself.
Awesome conversion! Love seeing the small diesel conversions, got an IDI myself!!!
This is a work of art. It may not be flashy like a hot rod but the engineering is next level stuff.
This was a beautifully engineered project. We need more of this!
I have always dreamed of mating a 4BT Cummins with a Willy's truck, but I never dreamed of mating an agricultural JD with a truck! What an original idea and job well done .
Been done. When I worked at the Waterloo Engine Works back in the 1980s, one of the engineers there put a 4 cyl. Deere engine into a Lincoln Towncar. It was dog slow but got 40 mpg. : )
Your probably right. I heard something about some guys over at PEC back in the day squeezing a 6 cyl maybe a 7.6 under the hood of a pickup.
If you worked there in the 80s you should remember the John Deere camper chassis program, and the dealer only service trucks that had Deere engines.
@@Chevy4x4dawg Yes. The RV chassis business was sold to oshkosh because it was a financial loser. I never heard anything about the service trucks. probably a myth.
@@gonerydin4225 Best I can remember the RV chassis business was right during the late 80s financial crisis so I am sure it was cut quickly with such a small profit margin. As to the service trucks I worked at a Deere Dealership that had looked into buying one. Also I have seen a brochure for them on eBay several years ago. Now were any ever produced that is certainly up for debate. Like I said it doubled the price and the only benefits were the dealership could work on the engine and that it had a longer life. I'm sure the transmission and other components would have been a warranty nightmare. That said there may have never been any produced.
Have never smiled so long in my life but dang looking at that you have to. Ty you for sharing this with us🙂
Thanks for the note.
To a non car guy with zero problem solving skills, this is a big deal. To real car guys who have and use problem solving skills, this is just a clean nice job. There is nothing crazy amazing about it. It is a very nicely done diesel swap. Props to this guy for the attention to detail.
And all the junk electronics that are put into it too huh want to give that props all that electronic bullshit belongs in a barn fire
Cubans had been doing this for ages lol. i friend got a boat diesel engine into his 52 chevy . we don't have a lot of parts so we have to work with what we have.
The boss wants cruise and a/c , the boss gets it, this is truly amazing work from the other guy , so much knowledge and skill needed
Reminds us of the truck we built. The truck is a 1952 Dodge "Pilothouse" truck with a twin-turbo 4.5L John Deere Powertech engine. Mated to the Powertech is an Allison 2000 transmission that we built a custom adapter plate for in order for them to adapt to each other. The truck sits on a fully custom frame too. Check out our page to see it
Brilliantly conceived, flawlessly executed. One of one.
your exactly correct, well said ..........
I'm not sure about the one of one part. The only thing that might make it one of one is the engine. But who's to say that exact engine has not been put in a truck before.
@@redwood7121 So as soon as you go find another 69 GMC K2500 with that JD engine in it and a 1000 Allison with 2000 internals and a divorced 203 transfer case, you can call it 1 of 2. Oh and it's gotta have cruise and air too. Better get started.
@@blythkd9017 I'm guessing you've never built anything.? Gmc made thousands of that exact same truck. People have been putting different engines and drive trains in vehicles since the start of cars. Is it one of one because it has a different drive train.? Kind of , not really. You can put any engine in any vehicle. That engine could blow tomorrow and it's a one of one scrap truck.? People have been doing this stuff forever and it's quite possible someone else has built an identical truck with an identical drive train.
@@redwood7121 You're missing the point but you're obviously not going to see the light no matter how much anyone preaches to you. Possible that someone else has built the exact same truck? Absolutely. Likely? Not even a remote chance. And yes, I've built plenty of stuff. Guessing you haven't?
What a beautiful shop! Clean, organized, well-lit. I love it!
Congratulations to these gentlemen. Engine bay is a work of art. Love to see it in person.
Amazing how clean a build it is. Just goes to show you how one man with a master plan can do as good or better than a coordinated team.
WOOW WHAT A BUILD ! just unreal how flawless he did everything, im speechless.
Thats awesome. Been around farming off and on through my life and always loved the big JD's, plus '69 GMC 4x4 is my favorite truck. Perfect.
As a kid in the 70s . I remember our local tractor dealer building a Chevy luv truck with a tractor engine .Thanks this bring back some nice memory. God bless All!
My build started in the early '80s with a '70 3500 one ton GM with 9' stepside bed . Ist engine was a takeout from a C-65HD Chevy = GM 4-53N, along with a Spicer 3152 five speed transmission , backed up with a Spicer 5831 three spiied auxilliary with .74 overdrive. I put it on the road in September '84, and in '96 I installed a DD 4-53T. Originally I stayed with original 4.10 ratio rear, but several years ago, I switched to a 3.58 Dana '70, as now it'll cruise the interstate with traffic, and not have engine singing . 38 years plus about 300,000 miles verifies it's been a practical-successful conversion .

Back in 1985 I put a JD 404, out of a 7700 combine, in a 1977 ford Hi Boy. My friends would always set me up for a back to back pull off, never lost. Never broke any axels but had a hard time holding the clutch in it.
In high school our shop teacher had us install a perkins four cylinder into a ford torino, as well as building from scratch a tractor for his farm! To see this is awesome. Cheers.
All negative comments are out of ignorance or jeoulousy. Good build, smart and skilful people. Beautiful end-product.
Ain't got nuthin negative, buuuuut jealous, just bucket fulls.
This truck needs to be in a John deere tractor museum after Clayton is through driving it. For posterity. Or some famous automotive collection like Jay Leno's. Of course we will not be around much longer to enjoy such craftsmanship and great engineering. Well done!!!
Well that ticked all my box's!! I had to stop the video 25 times and just admire the engineering and craftsmanship in that build!! It is totally amazing!! They should be very very proud of that truck!! I just can't find the words to say how impressed I am!! Very nicely done gentlemen!!! JMHO 8) --gary
..same here. I’d LOVE to do this..but with my ‘04 Ford F-350. ANY truck COULD work…
Are you crazy you can't be serious all the modern technology they've got in that thing is the biggest drawback of it all it's unbelievable why everything's got to be so electronic New age technology meanwhile I get across the country and 7/8 of all the tractors that are built are broke down sitting somewhere because they can't afford to fix them what's wrong with you
Another thing what good is the truck for it's a showroom piece so you'll never get it out in the field to test it to see if it's really worthy of what they claim it is that thing probably wouldn't last a month out in the field maybe sit there but not to work it
My late cousin had installed an ADE/Perkins 236 Massey Ferguson tractor engine into his 80 series Landrcruiser. Fuel consumption was a constant 24mpg US, regardless of speed or load. It was very successful.
Without a doubt one the cleanest if not the cleanest hybrid engine/chassis marriages ever. Spectacular job guys!!! Absolutely outstanding!!!
I am truly impressed with this man’s knowledge and ability
I went through that program back in 2005-6! I live 50 miles from walla walla WA! The town so nice they named it twice!! Best thing to ever happen to me!! Les was a hard ass but I deserved all of it!!! I absolutely love this build!! Was hoping for a mechanical setup when I saw the clicking, but kudos for a clean build!!!
Les was awesome. He could teach you a lot if you let him. The slackers really struggled with him.
Super clean amazing fabrication awesome work I'm literally Blown Away! Hats off to the Builder
I had a 69 Chevy 4 by 4. And plowed snow for 13 years. Strong truck. Love the body style
I come from a Case/Ford family and and married into a Deere/Chevy family if World War III kicks off it will probably start over turkey at my house...
Shame y'all weren't a new holland/ford family.
Lol, Peace Talks: Remember those old square body early 1970's Chevys and late 1970's Fords? Those were the days.....
Beemer Dodge Ford VW Buick family. It's STRANGE
Just goes to show a feller can have good taste in women but can’t choose his family.
Massy ferg and Cub for life!
This is a such a cool truck. The interior looks great and the green and yellow pinstriping is very tasteful.
how about a spec with tractor tires on it
But is it workable with all the electronic junk in it
Just when you think you've seen it all, this shows up to the party and takes the cake. Incredible build.
Epic build! Awsum to see a relationship between employer and employee to create a fine piece of art! Well done Gentlemen!
Beautiful project! Thank you for sharing it with us. I truly understand how much work goes into these projects. Amazing. Hope you guys develop some great new technicians who carry on the interest in keeping our trades alive!
Love it guys! Even though I'm a fan of the "other" green tractor, Oliver. We farmed with two Olivers and a MM during the 50's, 60's, and early 70's.
My dad had a 1970 chevy truck when I was a kid. One of the best looking trucks in my opinion
This is a heaven of a truck build! Enjoy this precious beauty! This is how trucks should be built!
Well done boys. I never thought it was possible! it's mega cool.
I interned at a Deere dealer in college and wanted to work there but they didn’t want to pay me a fair wage. 4 years later I’m making double what they offered me at a new holland dealer.
@slowride55 : Funny you say that, because I had the same problem. In the 1990's, after achieving 2 college degrees, in Ag Business and Equipment Engineering, John Deere pushed me away with their pathetic compensation. 2 years into working for them, it was obvious they just weren't willing to pay a fair wage, so I left. When I later worked for a CIH dealer, pay rates were a bit better, but still not good enough either, and I eventually left there as well. The agricultural industry as a whole suffers from consistently losing good, intelligent people because they all pay substandard wages. It's an unfortunate situation for everyone who loves Ag, but needs to make a reasonable living and refuse to be dirt poor while the corporations continue to line their wallets.
That's the way life is it sounds like they did you a favor
That's how free markets work
@@stevenlharris Is it free market when Apple tells companies not to sell me chips so I can't fix machines? Some guys found the chip in some wall charges so that's how they get them.
@@noahpaulette1490 You'll have to tell me how your inability to get chips from a manufacturer has any relation to working at a John Deere dealer. Sounds more like you take any opening you can find to complain.
We build trucks around here all the time, but this is by far the coolest build I’ve seen long time. Outstanding Mr.
Nice truck! Love that body style! I wish I was 35 years younger for that program.
damn that truck is gorgeous with or without the that motor
I'd rather have the original 350 with the 4speed granny gear. I had one and it was a great truck.
As I recall back in the 80`s I remember seeing Kenworth`s with John Deere emblems on the hood. Having a degree in Ag mechanics I will stay a mechanic. I don`t want to be a technician. Everyday I learn something new. One day I can be working on a D7 Cat and the next be working on a 7800 John Deere. With shop rates now not many of us can afford technicians unless it is something specialized that needs repair.
Deere was testing their V8 in OTR Tucks.😯
In a dealership, being a mechanic and a technician, go hand in hand!
Awesome video. Years back I worked for Daimler Commercial Busses North America and we had an order of busses for Puerto Rico that had John Deere six cylinder motors. Great build with the old Ford.
🇺🇸 Nothing like the work of a true craftsman ! So great to see the work of a true professional ! Experience is absolutely priceless ! 🇺🇸
Awesome! I would love to own it. This is one of the best old body styles of GM. I love diesel in pickups. Wished my father could have seen some of these conversions.
James, you're correct. '67 to '72 was the strongest [best] cab GM [now gm] ever built. In '73 the sheet metal became tin. My friend had a '73 C-10 and on a quiet night he could hear it rusting in the driveway.
Sick Video!! Please keep it up! You have to get in touch with a local Bakersfield concrete legend, Terry P. Bedford! His classic truck is beautiful.
Local here in Bakersfield and loved seeing this!
That’s a beautiful truck, awesome job putting that all together
That is one elegant job. Thanks for show casing it.
Wouldn’t surprise me if Deere sends these guys a cease-and-desist letter and order the truck to be crushed. John Deere is the worst agricultural company to work with and has been the subject of right to repair laws for a while now.
Indeed, I was going to basically say the same thing.
No chance. If you want to put a '79s Deere engine in a pre-emissions pickup, there's nothing JD can say about it under any legality that currently exists anywhere in the 50 states. Have fun
Everyone I talk to at the deere dealership I work at, even the corporate guys keep telling me to put a 6068 in my pickup. Bo reason for them to not like it
Get fricked John Deere is the best at company going
Need a valve cover for a 4039 series they wanted $780 for it 😢
I used to work at this particular dealership as a mechanic, and this truck was the best thing to look at in the whole shop
My very first job was at one of his dealerships in Delano Ca. Best man to ever work for.
I knew a guy that ran a Grading Company back in the day that put a 3 cylinder Detroit in an 80s model Chevy 4-wheel drive.
Good engines just noisy as hell !!!
So nice and well done. I remember a farmer when I was growing up installed a Perkins into a early 80’s GMC K2500. Loved the sound of that thing rolling down the road.
I had an 71 International 1300 service truck with a Perkins six cylinder running a straight upright 4 inch exhaust, not that loud but sounded fuken great.
He hit the nail on the head there when he said better than factory. That's one bulletproof truck...
This is an awesome project, he did a great job fitting it all together beautifully.
You've been OVERHAULED, John Deere style
When a gmc truck an a John Deere love each other very much they make a baby
Now this is too cool to see a John Deer powered old GMC truck.
yeah we were doing some "testing" love the straight poker face the thing is a beast ! nice job !
I want one!!!!! That is absolutely true craftsmanship at its extreme best!
Excellent work on the truck. What a lot of people don’t realize is that John Deere builds a huge amount of engines for generators and pumps and other applications other that farm equipment.
Used to be very simple engines to work on!, don't know if that is true anymore.
I'd only do this if I owned a dealership. John deere is just like ford, they'd rather you buy a different brand than let you work on your own tractor
Unfortunately yes
@John Doe I have a feeling that a guy having it done for him wants a modern engine thats gonna be reliable and parts readily available, I'd probably go with an old mechanical engine too but I'd be building it myself
@@Beandiptheredneck I would say the modern engine is more a creature comforts thing than a reliability/availability thing since you can still buy any part for a 1967 JD 4010 at the dealer and there probably isn't a more reliable tractor ever made
As someone who works at a Ford dealership, knows the parts on todays engines, and has seen what it takes for the techs to do what used to be simple jobs, I fully welcome you to work on your own Ford. Let's see how far you get doing a water pump on a turbo 3.5 or cooling hose replacements on a 4 cylinder EcoBoost before you BEG the dealership to do it for you.....
That’s literally all diesel pick up makers. Don’t touch their software.
Amazing. Super clean install. Give that man a raise.
This is an absolutely incredible... just wow. Like it looks factory fresh.
I have a set of factory Deere motor mounts for putting a 329 in a c60. There was one or two years you could order a c60 with a factory installed Deere 6cyl. Somewhere I even have the brochure that shows the gold painted Deere power systems engines they used and the trucks.
you should find the brochure and show it on your channel!
That would be really cool to see Brian.
bcbloc02 I would’ve been really impressed if it had a 6404T in it!!
Nothing breaks like a Deere, nothing costs as much as a Deere $$$
Just a work of art I can see was shown here! Nice work!!!
He is one heck of a fabricator! Well done
Show this to Jay Leno. I'll bet he will want to do a video on it in his garage.
I know a guy with an old Chevy ambulance that has been converted to a mobile service truck. It is powered by a John Deere big six diesel from a tractor. Manual transmission is from a hay hauler. Works great.
What kind of front end is under it to hold the weight of a Deere 6?
I love this being a big Deere fan after years in the logging industry this is so freaking cool
As a tradesman what a top idea to show the young people what u can do and to get them interested in a trade well done 👍
Coolest thing I’ve seen on KZhead in a very very long time.
That would be the smartest thing to do with any GM truck.👍
Yeah bc they all breakdown
Yeah I only got 380,000 miles on my Chevy and 285,000 on my GMC original engine and transmission s. Terrible
@@MitzvosGolem1 yeah, you need to bronze those pieces of @#*$ like people used to baby shoes. 🤣

I went to High School with a classmate who dropped a 4-53 Detroit and a manual trans in a for F-250 4x4 back in 77-78 It would really turn heads when you heard that screaming Jimmy go by.
Nice job!! I used to do this kind of work and know how much time, effort, & $$$ go into this. Great work.
I love how the engineer waits for his time, also the investor doesn’t have a flooded ego.. if you had all the money in the world to do it better than our competitors, without the stock holders pressure. This is how it would look
Beauitful engineering and a fantastic result. I will be showing this to my Australian Farmers
Beautiful and clean work. I love it.
