By breeding house cats with wild animals, humans developed hybrid cats that look like little leopards. Bengal cats are a breed that was developed by breeding domestic cats with asian leopard cats. The first American bengal breeder is a woman named Jean Mill, but her work has continued through other breeders. We met one of those breeders, Anthony Hutcherson, when we went to film the cats at the Westminster Dog Show. Besides bengals, we also saw another hybrid breed: savannahs. Instead of asian leopard cats, savannahs were developed by breeding house cats with servals. Unlike the other two breeds, the last breed we met, toygers, are not hybrid cats. Breeder Judy Sugden created the breed by carefully breeding domestic cats with qualities that resemble wild tigers. To learn more about the cats and the breeders that made possible, watch the video above.

    • Get a cat. Million of cats would love to meet you and be your forever kitty - just choose one (or two). Cats are sooo much better than kittens; all kittens are cute but cats have 'personality' and you can pick the one (or two) that suit your lifestyle; a cuddle-puss, an independent character; one who loves to play or one who only sleeps on your lap ... I adopted an adult cat and that was one of the best things I ever did in my entire life. Go get a kitty!

    • If51aj - there are cat fostering programs at most no-kill rescue shelters. Fostering is a great option for you and kitty. You get the company of a cat till it can find a forever home and cat gets to relax in your place instead of a cage or crate in a shelter. They pay for vet bills and usually food and litter too. Although cats marking is a problem for some kitties - others wouldn't ever pee outside their box ^..^< I don't know about Zeeahko's situation; landlords can be anti-cat as well :(

Back in the Victorian times and a little after that, they looked a lot more like other cats and didn't have the pug-like face. I can't remember how it happened, but people started breeding them to have the noses that they do, which is a shame, I think. An exotic pet has needs that a suburban family can’t heed to. How happy do you think a tiger that lives in a cage in someone’s yard is? A wild bird that’s lived it’s entire life flying long distances being out into a space they can barely stretch their wings? Exotic pets and domesticated pets are different.

They're just TOO MUCH CAT for most people. Once the novelty wears off, then you're stuck with a very energetic cat you can't deal with. very-very few people can provide an adequate home for these cats. He has shorter legs and is much more muscular and not as skinny than other Bengals. Makes him unsuitable for breeding somehow. He just turned 2 a few weeks ago and he is perfectly healthy and a sweet cat. Anubis had a typical Bengal body but his coat doesn't have the most desirable markings/rosettes. Both of them are awesome boys and we love then to pieces. They come from the same breeder but aren't related at all. Which was important to me. I don't want beautiful cats. Cats give birth then four to six weeks later they go into heat again and the cycle is repeated. Many times they just leave the litter of kittens to fend for themselves. Sometimes Good Samaritans find them usually in bad shape. Sometimes there's not enough money or adopters to save everyone. ❤️ From a former West Virginia animal shelter director.

Then I came to a stop..a video that showed how we corrupted the dogs heritage...(I think). The German Shepherd is shorter and is fatter than it was. My dogs breed has a longer body and if not hold correctly, its spine can be cracked(or broke ). The pugs face is more spatted in , and you can barley see the muzzle (that’s why they have breathing problems). But my point is that I hope they don’t go *TOO* overboard like we did to the dogs. He is fun to chase around the house and is not afraid of dogs. He even likes being touched by visiting friends and neighbors.

  • Selective breeding is an old and common practice and is how we have so many dog and cat breeds. Selective breeding doesn't make a dent in the cat population crisis, and in some cases has been a result of scientific research for helping our understanding of human diseases. In fact, one great thing about the Bengal cat is that they're hypoallergenic. So my family member who otherwise wouldn't have know the joys of having a pet cat, is currently experiencing that joy. Perhaps blame the other large scale breeders of common cats and the kitten industry!

  • As a veterinarian who has seen bengals and savanna cats in practice, I think it is important to warn people that these two breeds are much more likely to be aggressive than your average domestic shorthair. I have met friendly bengals but they are the rarity not the norm. If you really want one of these cats I recommend getting one that's at least 9 months old and has a friendly disposition. Also visit your breeder's facility and see if the animals they are using for breeding have good dispositions. While you may want a tiny leopard or serval in your home, I am sure you would prefer a cat that lets you pet it.

    • My two bengals are daft as a brush but they only show agression to each other and it's more like wrestlemania. In 9 months I've only seen them hurt each other (nipping ears rather than anything serious) twice. Any scratches on us have been accidental (hadn't trimmed their nails and they jumped over us to get chase a fly or similar) or during play. They are defintely willful and energetic but I have been late for work several times because they were being so cuddly. I agree with meeting the parents. Our cat's parents seemed very calm and good natured. I read somewhere that you should avoid any breeder who won't let you see the parents.

    • That's awesome :). I have met friendly Bengals, don't get me wrong! But they tend to be more likely to bite me than the average cat. That being said 90% of cats hate the vet, so even cats that are great at home may be aggressive here. I have had more than one owner of Bengals tell me they would have gone with a different breed had they known that Bengals tend to be more aggressive. I have had two owners who expressed regret at purchasing their Bengal because they cannot pet or hold their cat. I think there are Bengal breeders who care about temperament like those in the video, and others that just care about looks.

      @clandes7ineindya154@clandes7ineindya1547 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah, it sounds like bad breeders. Bengals certainly need a lot of attention and things to do and they can be quite vocal too. Ours went to the vet yesterday and yelled all the way. Once let out one of them was totally chilled and the other went and hid behind the vet's computer and refused to come out. One of the reasons they were there was to get a tick removed and even then he tensed up but was OK. I suppose it's the same with normal cats. If the breeder sucks or the initial owner does then the cat grows up mean. It's the same with raising children. :-)

While efforts are being made to preserve these breeds, the domestic cat people wanted to preserve the coat patterns in a domestic cat so that if the wild cat is extinct or super rare, they can breed back the coat pattern. • @Oritra Kar Jean was my grandmother. I have many memories of visiting her throughout the years and enjoyed helping her with the cats. I was pretty young for most of my visits, but my last memories of her are from her 90th birthday back in 2016. It was wonderful to see how many bengal owners left a note for her online for her birthday, which was then printed out for her. Seeing these cats helps keep my memories of her.

    • Iamredguy AJ We got her from a breeder! I’m sure you would be able to find a toyger if you just look up toyger breeders in your area. Although we did have to drive for 2 hours to get her which isn’t that bad

  • Everyone's here arguing over adopt or shop, but my argument is that if LOADS more people actually did research on animals before buying them as pets, adopt vs. shop wouldn't be an issue. Please, everyone, consider your life with a pet similarly as you would consider having a baby. They are both expensive, require lots of time and effort, need to be taught life skills, and need proper nutrition/space/enrichment. DO YOUR RESEARCH and really consider if a pet is right for you, and if so, which breed/species. Adopt from a shelter or shop from a reliable breeder.

    • PangoPixel I do agree with what your saying to a point but part of what your missing is that there are already cats in the shelters far before these people started making more cats. Whether or not they’re cool looking is not justification for adding to the problem. That’s just another version of ignorance when it comes to owning pets. People are only concerned about what they want out of an animal rather than treating it like a living being

      @wyvernnymph5757@wyvernnymph57575 жыл бұрын
    • @@wyvernnymph5757 Responsible owners don't choose an animal based on just how cool it looks, there are several factors. Some people want a specific temperament to match their lifestyle, or want to avoid problems with the animal's health or mind. Some folks need hypoallergenic breeds. You can't always get that from shelters, which often have mixed breeds and animals that need special care/training. My point is that if more people DID start treating their animals like living things and realized the care they need, there would be less animals in shelters in the first place, and we would mostly get our pets from good breeders. "Adopt don't shop" is a fine sentiment, but I feel like it's disrespectful to the pet owners who choose to buy from ethical breeders and treat their animals to the best of their abilities, but because they didn't save an animal from the shelter they're bad people I guess?

    • yes don't get a dog if you can't take care of a dog, or cat for that matter.. i've had my cat for years and he still surprises me sometimes they are hunters by nature and if let outside will kill on average 12-13 animals for sport... look at australia's problem with introducing cats without spaying and neutering.. TLDR: cats will destroy an entire ecosystem for fun
