NOSTALGHIA is Andrei Tarkovsky's brooding late masterpiece, a darkly poetic vision of exile. It was the first of his features to be made outside of Russia, the home to which he would never return.
Tarkovsky explained that in Russian the word "nostalghia" conveys "the love for your homeland and the melancholy that arises from being far away." This debilitating form of homesickness is embodied in the film by Andrei (Oleg Yankovsky, The Mirror), a Russian intellectual doing research in Italy. He becomes obsessed with the Botticelli-like beauty of his translator Eugenia (Domiziana Giordano), as well as with the apocalyptic ramblings of a self-destructive wanderer named Domenico (Erland Josephson, The Sacrifice).
Written with frequent Michelangelo Antonioni collaborator Tonino Guerra (L'Avventura), NOSTALGHIA is a mystical and mysterious collision of East and West, shot with the tactile beauty that only Tarkovsky can provide. As J. Hoberman wrote, "NOSTALGHIA is not so much a movie as a place to inhabit for two hours."

  • I just watched it again last night andI couldn’t believe how much more I picked up on it this time. Every time I watch a Tarkovsky film I see it quite differently and I appreciate him all the more. I just find myself spellbound in a way almost no other films can achieve.

  • Possibly the greatest film of all time.

    • Andrei is so great because I've seen all the films of him called the best ever made, amongst them the most praised I think are The Mirror, Stalker and Rublev... In my honest opinion The Mirror is the best film ever made, it was his first film changing the style to full poetic form, then he did stalker nostalghia sacrifice... The turning point was the Mirror :)

    • It's certainly my favorite film. It completely changed my expectations of film. I rarely bring this film up in film discussions because it's pointless trying to discuss it. It just needs to be experienced, like all of his films.

    • I could apply the same reasoning you gave for Stalker to most of his films. They all seem to reflect existentialism and humanity. However, they are slightly focused on different areas. Mirror examines fleeting childhood memories and streams of consciousness. Stalker examines faith and imagination, as you mentioned. Nostalghia, on the other hand, seems to be the most self reflective and in the moment. By this, I mean that it seems that Tarkovsky made a film that explored himself as he was in that moment. It's the film that made me realize that he is actually a genius, a term I don't use lightly. You can dissect his films individually, but when you look at them as a larger body of work, Nostalghia is the film that seems to define that body of work. It's as if he was exploring the past (Ivan's Childhood, Rublev, Mirror), exploring existentialism with playful backdrops (Solaris, Stalker), and then reflecting on the agonies of self in the moment with Nostalghia. The Sacrifice seems like a logical film to follow because it seems to focus on change. However, the real reason why Nostalghia is my favorite Tarkovsky film is because I connected to while sleeping. I've always find myself dozing off to his films upon initial viewing. However, this is not a bad thing. His sculpting in time technique and philosophy is the reason behind this. He's breaking down our sense of time. However, like most, I'm usually not prepared for it. It's like a spell is casted over me. The difference with Nostalghia though is that I found myself waking up in tears and not knowing why. I had never experienced this before or since. I demanded my more viewings. The more I found myself speechless. With the exception of Mirror, I can explain his films to others who are unaware. However, I can't do this with Nostalghia. I've always felt the greatest works aren't understood but felt. They also demand many viewings to appreciate. For me, Nostalghia fits this perfectly. All of his films do. However, this one just spoke to me. Perhaps it is just because I suffer from Nostalgia. I don't know. As for Stalker, it's the film I find myself wanting to watch the most. I honestly find that film to be enjoyable, and for the reasons you mentioned. Stalker is the film I would show others who aren't familiar with Tarkovsky. Sorry for the overkill.

    • ...perhaps a bit like trying to explain zen to someone other than yourself...once you appreciate something resonating so, words & explication fail to do them justice. Genius is as near as we have in words indeed.

  • the scene with the man-poet and the girl-child: "why buy new shoes? it doesn't matter" (when standing in an indoor lake...d'y'ever feel indifference creeping up on you...unrecognised as being like depression until, somehow, it can't be shaken off...). honestly, one might be better reading A.T.'s daddy's poems rather than watching this movie, this moment tells me. He gets quoted too.

  • Water is a symbol of life and purification, fire is a symbol of "light of wisdom"; See what they did to the lake they soaked in, the lake drained, the bottom filled with moss and debris, there were coins - greed and fame, wine bottle - ignorance, bicycle - old culture; or a scene of the dilapidated old town that Andrei had visited, the floor submerged in water, a statue of an angel covered in seaweed, a cathedral without a roof. The old town is located in the high rock but abandoned, the new town was moved down the hill, this is also meaningful. What did man do with fire? That so-called civilization gave Domenico the fuel tank and encouraged him to set himself on fire, and when he called for help they stood there watching, what he said, did they understand? nothing difficult to understand, he said they listened, they put up banners and banners in support, but they encouraged him to look to death and then stand there and watch him die, it was the "light wisdom "that the human world in the present is pursuing, the" light "used to commit suicide; meanwhile they prevented him from walking through the lake and thinking that it was crazy and dangerous, it was futile! If that place - the square had water, Domenico would not have burned to death. go to my web site chi-blog(.)com, you will have answers about Andrei Tarkovsky movies

  • "between states" was the punch-line of the dialogue at the end of this trailer, which I've never seen. It's "not on my dvd". I haven't watched this film in years. More cinematic poetry from A.T. Film only crossed my mind right now because of its title. Nostalgia is a sad and unhealthy emotion. This film reflects that (even if heart disease/smoking does the central character in and hysteria his alter-ego). I remember a line in "I'm Not Rappaport": "Nostalgia! I hate it. It kills more of us old people than heart disease." But look how often the emotion is expressed by generally young people today. Teens wishing they were still pre-teens? Or middle aged people wishing they were still teens? How? Why? Isn't it "odd"? Then again, ancient Japanese white-face painting was odd too. I remember thinking years ago, and I may have been totally wrong, that Italians and Russians were both prone to feeling overawed by the enigmas of their own "national" histories (blame it on the fleeting impressions of Italians like Fellini/Alberto Moravia or Russian Dostoevsky types), but...by golly...in this film, a viewer gets a doubly heavy and literally fatal dose of that...lol (actually it is not lol at all). I guess that sense invaded A.T. from being a Russian exile in Italy. The most lethargic moment in film history could be every movement or non-movement by the poet figure in this movie.

  • You cannot mix iron and clay, you cannot mix tar and water, you cannot poison a well without the water turning sour. The Most High God expressly warns the grave consequences of conflating the darkness and the light, evil and good, bitter and sweet. He will not be mocked and man will reap what he has sown. The children of the night and the children of the day have no part with one another. I love Tarkovksys oeuvre as much as the next girl, however I do not like evil intentions no matter how beautiful the cinematography or poetic the script may be. I have not seen this film. However the trailer would not seem to have pure intent at the heart of it. The frontiers must always remain indelibly drawn. The spiritual night is crushing and claustrophobic and insufferable to bare. Those who worship this lawlessness and practise it have no future.
