Never Do THIS When You Leave Your Cat ALONE

In this video, we will talk about 9 common mistakes cat-owners unknowingly make when leaving their cats at home alone.
Don’t neglect to arrange for a pet sitter
You might be tempted to leave your pet home alone and head off for a weekend road trip - but you could be putting your cat’s physical and mental health in jeopardy.
You would never leave your dog alone for that amount of time, and your cat is just as social and just as dependent on you. It is important to arrange for a cat sitter who can come over a few times a day to make sure they are eating their meals, being played with, and keep their routines intact.
Don’t Leave Food in One Big Pile
If you pile a weekend’s worth of food into your cat’s bowl, they may overeat due to stress and become sick or run out of food on the final day of your trip. On the other hand, some cats are picky eaters and will turn their nose up at food that is less than fresh.
Instead, have your pet sitter feed them according to their regular schedule.
Don’t Forget to Provide extra Litter Box
It’s simple: No one wants to use a dirty bathroom. Cats are very clean animals. So the idea of using a filthy restroom is just as repulsive to them as it is to us. When you’re gone, the last thing a stressed cat needs is a dirty litter box, as it can be yet another cause of anxiety.
Make sure to set up several litter boxes around the house, and clean your cat’s box before you leave.
Don’t Change Your Cat’s Routine
Cats are creatures of habit, and they depend on us to keep their surroundings stable and predictable.
Any change in their daily routine or environment can cause them to stress out.
You’d never leave your cat without water and food, but the timing as to when they get their food is very important too. Because thrive on predictability, any friend or pet sitter should visit your cat at least as often as the times you give your cat meals.
It will be less stressful for the cat if a normal routine is maintained.
Don’t Close Your Shades
Many people close their shades and blinds when they leave the house to keep the energy bill down and keep outsiders from looking in.
However, for many cats, a window perch can be an endless source of entertainment. If your cat loves watching birds and squirrels outside or basking in the sunlight, leave a few of your shades open for their benefit.
Get them a friend
Most cats enjoy each other's company and they thrive on building intimate ties with other felines.
If you leave your cat alone every day and you can’t provide your pet with enough interaction, playtime, and stimulation, consider getting a second cat to fill the need.
Don’t Board a Cat Who Is Better Off With In-Home Care
Sometimes, boarding your cat is a good option, particularly if they have a medical condition that requires regular monitoring.
That said, many cats are more comfortable and happier in their own homes. It’s typically very stressful for cats to be placed in an unfamiliar environment.
Make sure to weigh your cat’s social and physical needs and the duration of your time away before you hire a pet sitter or board your pet.
Don’t Neglect to Create opportunities for enrichment
It is important to remember that cats need opportunities for enrichment while you’re gone.
Create a little fun for your pet before you go off to work. A cat tree, cat perch, open paper bags, and fun toys create entertainment and can make a difference to a cat who spends the day alone.
If your feline friend is food motivated, then treat based puzzles can be a fun.
Television can also make for great entertainment. Popping the TV on may seem a bit weird, but your cat will love it.
Cats often like videos that show animals like birds and mice running around or fish swimming.
Do cats get lonely?
Cats become lonely when they are left unattended for long periods of time.
Because cats appear very stoic, many people miss the signs indicating that all is not happy in kitty’s world.
A common sign of loneliness is excessive vocalization. A lonely cat will wander through the house, meowing constantly or even yowling looking for someone to answer them.
Another classic sign of loneliness among cats includes destructive behaviors such as clawing up furniture or knocking objects over.
Missing the litter box is also a sign of loneliness.
Other signs that indicate your cat is having trouble with too much alone time include: Changes in behavior, appetite, or grooming habits.
How long can cats be left alone
In general, adult cats are content being left home alone for 8-12 hours.
Cats depend on their owners for regular feeding and valuable social time such as playing and cuddling. Even more worrisome than messes is the possibility of a sudden illness or injury. Fevers, urinary blockages, blood clots - these are common cat-health emergencies.

  • I had a cat adopt me in 2019 and we both were happy with him being the only child. Then COVID set in and I wasn't having people come over like I used to. By mid 2021 I started to notice a change in him. I work 10 - 12 hour days but always made time for cuddles, play, relax etc. I always leave the TV on for noise and something to watch. But I noticed it wasn't enough as he became lethargic and showing signs of depression and I decided to get a kitten. I came across a woman who does fostering for a rescue group who had a foster that just gave birth to 5 kittens. When they were of age I was going to adopt one until she told me momma needed a home and asked if I knew anyone. After thinking about it and seeing momma so sad, defeated and scared and at 8 years old estimated she had a rough life. I decided to adopt momma instead. It was exactly what both needed and in a short time they both came to life. Today, 16 months later, the 2 cats are inseparable and it's such a joy to see them playing, relaxing and being each others best friend as well as mine. 2nd cat was the best decision. 😊❤ I give them about an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening for KZhead cat games but I also play with my cats and I really have to be sure to give equal attention to both to avoid jealousy. If my girl cat gets too much attention but wont move so he can get attention then he sits on her until she moves 😅.

    • @@xkirax2997 same, been about 8-10 months. It's better now than it was before. Also she was here first (for about 4 months) and is deaf. both of them are roughly the same age and both street cats I took in. Before she would scream blue murder even if he was in the same room. Now she only hisses at him when he comes too near but she will go sniff his butt whenever she feels like it. One thing I think may have helped is feeding them together. One bowl of food either side of me and let them eat facing each other. Slowly over time the dishes come closer and you get out of the way. Also when I give them treats, it's one for her, one for him. As soon as one of them hisses or goes for the other, treat time is over. Do this a couple of times and she should get the message. Also he goes out for a few hours per day so that is just me and her time. She was here first so I guess her nose is out of joint, you need to show her she's still your girl. They might never be friends but at least they are no longer enemies. LoL. Good luck.

  • I talk to my cat everytime I have to leave him to conduct errands. I tell him a few times before leaving, where I am going to, what time I am going to be home etc. I reassure him I am not abandoning him, & I am coming home. He is such a good sincere companion to me. When I return, I make a huge thing of it, cuddles and more talking. He is so clever and so loved. Had him during Covid lock downs at 12 weeks old. He is 3 now. I am 71. If I go away for longer, he goes to my son, daughter-in-law & grandchildren. He loves their 9yr old poodle. No lack of affection for him, in that home. ❤

  • A friend asked me to take in his cat while he was on vacation. The poor thing was terrified and hiding the entire week. I'm not sure she ate or drank anything that week. When my friend came in the door the cat immediately changed back to herself and was very glad to see him. I explained what happened and suggested it would be better for the cat to stay home and have a sitter look in on her daily.

    • I do the same and my little boy ignores me while I’m leaving, but that is okay because I always tell him when I will be home. I find myself keep the time. For example, if I tell him I will be home in 2 hours I better be gone only 2 hours or he will “yell” at me when I’m late. Also, I had to be taken to emergency and was in the hospital for 10 days. We were both missing each other terribly. My daughter who James was familiar with looked after him. I was asking the medical team was there any chance of bring him in. Their answer was sorry we know both of you are missing each other but due to regulations and policies he couldn’t come in 😢🐈 When I got home we could not leave each other alone. Luckily I had to stay home while I recuperated.

  • I just spent a month in Italy and I took kitty with me. I used a back pack carrier and as long as he was on my back, he was quiet but when he was under the plane seat, he did meow quite a lot. If I tapped the carrier with my foot, to let him know I was still there, he was fine. I was so glad I brought him. I found a pet friendly B&B and he was ok with me being out for a few hours every day. He apparently liked it because he got more cuddly and affectionate than he had been. We Italians love cats and the whole airplane crew was going gaga over him. 😻😻😻

  • I boarded my 9 year old cat during a cross country trip in our RV. At one point in the trip, we met friends for a 5 day cruise, so we arranged with a lovely kennel in a quiet wooded area. The dog did just fine out with the other dogs. The cat was inside, in a multi-level cat cage, window overlooking bird feeder, behind the intake counter. It looked like a great place for him to get attention and be watched carefully. After the 5 days, we picked the pets up, but noticed as we continued on the trip, the cat not eating. Or drinking. Or doing anything in the litter box. A check with the boarding facility and they swore up and down that he had been just fine while with them. Hmmm. After a few days, we stopped longer at a place to get off the road and try to get the cat back in his food and water, litterbox routine. Then to an emergency vet for injection of fluids. We continued the trip, and he still was not doing anything, not even barfing on curvy highways. Second emergency vet, no obstructions found in Xrays, more hydration injected. We cut the trip short, headed for home 2 days away. Finally he began taking water, food followed a day later. He didn't poop until the 7th day after getting him back. No more boarding, ever again for this one!

    @Meyersci@Meyersci Жыл бұрын
    • I agree. I boarded my cat at the vet for 5 days once and they called me 2 days in saying she hadn’t urinated and they said they needed to scan her for kidney stones. Sooo I paid $400 for that and they swore she had them, gave her medication but after a week being home she was fine. I’m never doing that again. I feel like every time I bring her to the vet they wanna run all these tests and inject her with medication that costs me a fortune meanwhile she’s a healthy, happy, normal, cat. Cats imo do not do well in sudden changes in their environment, especially when that means being locked in a cage for a majority of the day.

I recommend to adopters to use a cat sitter rather than boarding. As you mentioned, they are creatures of habit and do better in their own environment. I have many clients and treat their cats as if they are my own - love, attention, litter box care, suggest fountains for water so it's always fresh and when they are gone I suggest using a radio or tell Alexa or Google to "play classical music playlist for cats" and they love it. I always recommend more than one cat as well (unless the kitty does not like other cats) and besides, cats are like potato chips - you can't have just one! BUT, I don't recommend having a "bag full" of cats! :)

  • I rescued an 8-week old kitten at a shipper in Georgia. I kept my eyes open for another stray cat to rescue so that the kitten would have someone to keep her company when I wasn't around. Six months after finding my female, I found a stray male that was about four months younger. He was cold, sick, hungry and scared. By the end of the day, I had earned his trust enough that he let me near to pick him up and take with me. Both are very well loved and are bonded to me to the point where I can let them outside to explore and they'll run off and be gone all day, but when I call their names in the evening, they'll come running home to their Daddy.

Boarding facilities make the most money then, and they overbook the place to make up for slow times and the stress level is thru the roof at that time. When they run out of cages, they stick cats in large dog carriers! Ridiculous. Whatever you do, do NOT board your cat!

We gave alot of instructions to staff. It worked out OK for a bit. Then we noticed that we were getting calls from the boarding facility. Our cat was vomiting, he wasn't eating, he had diarrhoea and they had to take him from the vet. Once our cat came home, he recovered quickly. This happened a few more times and the last straw was when he came home and looked in very poor condition. I said, that's it...we are not going to board him again and we didn't. The fact is that my cat is under real stress when I am not at home, even if other family members are at home. She has a favorite toy, a teddy bear, as soon as I leave the house (I don’t leave for more than an hour or two), she drags this toy into the hallway, lies down next to it and starts to moan and howl until I return. This is repeated almost every time, except if she was asleep and did not hear that I had left. So all the talk that cats are indifferent to the absence of their owners is complete nonsense.

The house was trashed, eg mats skidded down to the other end of the hall, bed littered with paw prints from multiple paws chasing each other, stuffed knocked over and often the three exhausted cats all sleeping in his kitty bed. A furry pile of arms, legs and ears. Our kitty was an indoor outdoor cat, but those two older cats would not let him pass the corner of the house. Still a long way to get to the street. We never knew what we would find when we got home, but could guarantee his food bowl was empty. They had a great friendship but neighbours moved when he was about 1 year old. • Cats are so like people in the fact that we are all diferent, the problem is when we get a cat we don't know what their personalities are going to be like until it's too late. I have a British blue, now aged 11 and he never meows and won't sit on my lap, he loves rolling on the floor for us to tickle him and gives us face bumps all the time but that's it, they are such funny creatures.

  • For the past 10 years I have been going to Comic-con in San Diego. Luckily, my roommate, who had a cat & is a cat lover, is able to be there for my kitty and feed him when I'm gone. I am lucky on that end. I always ask my cat how was his day when I get home from work. He tells me.

  • We had to leave are cats three months in a boarding kennel. We had to move quickly, not by choice. Ended up In a hotel. We visited them every week it broke my heart to leave them. Happiest day I got to take them home. Marty our black cat had passed since then 😢we still have Timmy our tabby is 17 in June.

    • Marty mustve been sweet. Timmy sounds cute. Im a vet asst. MOST COMMERCIAL CAT FOODS ARE UNHEALTHY OVER THE LONG TERM. BEACAUSE THEIR INGREDIENTS ARE UNREGULATED IN THE U S A, AND MEAT IS EXPENSIVE. KIDNEY DISEASE IS COMMON. SO, PLEASE CONSIDER PURINA ONE, OR HILLS SCIENCE DIET FOR A LONGER LIFE. THEY COST A BIT MORE BUT YOUR CAT WILL BENEFIT. ALSO, MALE CATS GET URINARY BLOCKAGE FROM TOO MUCH DRY FOOD! CUT BACK DRY FOOD, AND WATCH TO MAKE SURE YOUR MALE CAT IS URINATING IF YOU HAVE AN OLDER CAT, IT SHOULD HAVE BLOOD TESTING DONE IF POSSIBLE AT THE VET. THIS RULES OUT MANY HEALTH PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY CAN GET WORSE.❤

  • We take our cat with us when we go camping in our RV. He doesn't like riding in the car, but his scent is all over everything in our RV, so he recognizes it as another of his "territories". The routine is the same in the RV as at home, so he doesn't flip out, and instead gets very relaxed. Of course, he prefers to be at home, which is where we spend the bulk of our time, but he does okay on our vacations, too.

  • It's shocking how few people know these basic things. Thanks for helping educate them! Best tip is to ensure your cat has a friend. Not just when you're away, but all day every day. Cats get so lonely!! But people think they're 'solitary' animals. Not true! We now have three and are thinking of getting even more.

  • I swear my cat has to be the most independent cat I've ever known. He just seems to be happiest left one. I was hoping for a cat that loves being petted but the only time he and I are attached is when he comes to bed with me. But having said that I've grown to love him. He loves outside and because he never had a human touch from the age of 2 months because his mother was feral really so maybe that's why. Maybe the first human touch which was from me he neveriked😂😂😂. Oh he does like being brushed.❤

  • We did a week long cruise and our cats let us know they weren’t happy. The kitchen was destroyed. There was a huge yellow spot in the middle of our bed. We changed the sheets, ditched the comforter u til could be laundered and settled in. Our male cat got on the bed and urinated while we were in it! We took off the sheets, put the first batch in the dryer, removed mattress cover to be laundered with the comforter and got back in bed. Then our female cat jumped up and did the same! Only my husband kept them from being outside cats! The sheets had to wait for the other 2 batches to move on to be washed! First time I’ve ever changed sheets 3 times in one day!!!

  • with the open bags tip, please remove the handles. It’s very dangerous for the cats, as their head can get stuck in the handles, they are trying to escape and that makes things worse quickly. If you’re not around it may lead to death 😢. We were very scared about this once, luckily everything was well, as we managed to help our kitty immediately, but the vet told us that unfortunately tragic accidents happened because of bags with handles 😢

  • I have 10 cats at any one time, as my wife fosters rescue cats. There is a toy, that we absolutely Never have in our house. It's those cat toys that consist of a flexible pole with a nylon string, and weighted feathers or whatever, on the end of the string. I used to jam the handle into a drawer like a fishing pole, to let the cats play with it. They like these things very much, and it's an easy toy for cat owners to play with, for getting cats to chase the end of it around. A few years ago my cat Olly was playing with it, by himself. I was sitting in the same room fortunately, be cause I suddenly realized it had got wrapped around his neck, and the end of it spun around the nylon string. He was being choked by it. If I hadn't noticed, he would have basically hanged himself on the floor, like an animal snare. He was ok, but I BANNED those Cat Fishing Poles in the House. The same go's for any type of string left where they can get at it. Fishing gear isn't my thing, but that stuff is deadly for keeping around a cat. I wish they would Ban those toys Period. You can visualize how you'd feel if it happened to yours. -Ireland

  • I leave mine at home 2 weeks a month. When I get home I spend the first 2-3 days spending every minute with them. I have a sitter that comes and sits with them daily. I also leave the movies running the entire time I am gone. I will add a second cat box. I would never bored them. I had a cat go to Kitty Jail overnight and she was never the same again. My cats have food 24/7. I got a call a week before I was scheduled to get back. I called a friend and had him go get 2x 26 pounds of cat food. 1 thing people need to remember is, They may only be in your life s short amount of it but you are in their life their entire life. Don`t get a pet unless you are going to be their forever home. There is no excuse that is worthy of I am moving and my animal can`t go to where I am moving to. I may work 400 miles away but I make sure they have an apartment in Vegas and someone to come in daily and hang out with them.

  • I had two cats who were born and lived outdoors in a colony. When I had to move them indoors they looked out the window all the time until I made a cat door for them. Now the one I have left just lives to go out and run around the yard. It took me a year to figure it out and sadly one stopped eating and died before I realized the problem was real.

The cams also record motion detected movements which can be played back instantly on our smartphones anywhere. The cams are Super HD and also have infra red for night viewing and recording on 64GB micro SD cards if the lights are off.

  • I have 2 rescues that are almost 1 year apart to the day....1st a friend brought to me with a puncture wound in her neck after being snatched from the dogs mouth that had already killed her momma and siblings, she was 3wks old, she'll be 3yrs in July. The second one my grand daughter and I found tied up in a plastic bag and left in the sun to dies at 4 1/2wks old, she'll be 2yrs in July. We had no intension of keeping the 2nd BUT the 1st had other plans. Day 1 #1, Matilda, did NOT like the idea of another cat in the house....took less that 24hrs for her to here the baby, Rose, crying and scared and Matilda was right in the box with her. Mommy instincts kicked in and she would pack Rose around, clean her and anytime she walked away and Rose made a sound of any kind she was right back to see what the problem was.....Drove Matilda crazy when we'd take Rose to feed her. After wks of Matilda taking care of her and us worried more that once that Rose wasn't going to make it we had to keep her. Long term affects...Matilda is scared to death of any and all dogs, she even freaks and goes hides if she hears one on tv. Rose some brain damage due to lack of oxygen and vet said the only way to explain her damage was "It will be like having a moderate to severely autistic 4yr old in your home for the rest of her life" and he was EXACTLY right! The lack of oxygen also affected her growth. She is only as big as and looks like a 3-4 month old kitten. At 1yr when she had only gotten that big he did several test to make sure she did not have a genetic disorder or something. All came back neg....so she's just a little bitty thing.

  • A few years ago, I lost my best friend of 9 years😺. He had been doing poorly for a couple of years, I had to orally give him medicine for those years and on occasion had to feed him with a syringe.💔 After he had passed😇, I wanted to get another little kitty, so I went to the local rescue farm and adopted another kitten! By sheer coincidence, he looks EXACTLY like the cat I just lost! 💘👍 I had him for a week and then ...I was playing a YT video of 2 cats in conversation, 2-3 minutes of meow ..really....meow..oh yes ..... my little guy was right up there talking with them! I knew right then we needed another kitty, so back to the farm and we got our little girl kitty!💘 Best move I could have made! They do EVERYTHING together ...... play...play fight....sleep.... groom ... one will even go to the box and the other one will cover it up!🤯 in fact they can't even be on opposite sides of a closed door with out ...meow.... excuse me, he's/she's on the other side of the door ....meow... I'm waiting....so I get up and open the door!🙄🤦‍♂🤷‍♂ I still worry about them when I go out, but I know they have each other! 😃 🦂💘😻😻

  • My two kittens are nearly 2 years old now but very playful. When I leave, sometimes I let the bathroom sink trickle a little fresh water. They will also play in the empty bathtub sometimes and I leave them a couple of toys to thrash around the tub. Also, if it's really warm, they seem to get a kick out of a few ice cubes instead of just water. They have more than one water dish and a few snack options, stashed around the house. Sometimes. I keep them guessing and they love an occasional mylar balloon! The string is irresistible! Once they puncture it, they celebrate their victory.🎈 🎉
