"People Live In Bushes And Bus Stops" | DARK SIDE Of Britain's Seaside Holiday Paradise

2024 ж. 18 Сәу.

Look into the dark side of Britain's seaside holiday paradise, with heightened concerns about a homelessness crisis. TalkTV spoke to a number of people in Cornwall, who highlighted a lack of affordable housing, the struggles of a disabled man living on the streets, a shortage of rental properties for locals, and the terror of fleeing violent relationships and ending up homeless.
People called for emergency measures to address what is increasingly becoming a crisis.
TalkTV's Oliver Whitfield-Miocic heard how people were living in unusual places like vans, bus stops, and roundabouts due to a lack of affordable housing in Cornwall.
Homelessness has increased by 40% in the last five years in the Southwest region of England, with Cornwall being the worst affected area.

  • How should the government solve this crisis? Let us know what it is like where you are!

    • It is not up to the government to "solve" this crisis, but it is up to the government to move all its rules and regulations out of the way and let the free market resolve the issues of supply and demand.

  • I'm 64 and disabled/unable to work. I'm 'lucky' to live in a tiny council flat - but at least I have one, and have a roof over my head. I had to go to the local Pantry today. I don't drive and it's a struggle to get there. I haven't been for over 3 weeks because of the difficulty getting to and from there. It's very good as its £5 for the bus fare, + £5 for £20 worth of food - it's a Godsend. It takes me 4 to 5 hours for the round trip, due to the horrendous bus service (it'd take 40 minutes round trip in a car). I'm always very ill by the time I get home, and am wiped out for the next few days. 90% of the people who go there, are foreigners - they live within walking distance of the church where it's held. Today, they said we could have one extra 'luxury item' as its their 2nd year of being. Open. I was number 18 in the queue. EVERY foreigner came out, with their items, and large tubs of Quality Street chocolates, or 2 boxes of chocolates. When it got to my turn, I was given a small pack of low calorie 5 pack of cereal bars!!! There were tubs of chocolates available, but I was told 'they weren't for me'!!! Other English people had the same as me - the large boxes and tubs were only available to the foreigners!!!!!! I know this isn't anywhere near as awful as being homeless, but I just wanted to point out the truth of how us indigenous people are treated VERY differently to foreigners. It's despicable and latent.

  • Are native brits breeding more now than we did in the 80s/90s? I don’t think so! Statistically we are choosing to have smaller families and children much later. So how do we not have enough housing in 2024? Answer 1 - mass unregulated immigration. Answer 2 - local housing being brought by non locals and turned into HMOs or air BNBs for greedy landlords.

    • The white population of this earth peaked in 1930. If you look at the population of major cities they're often lower than they were then even with our foreign friends. London peaked 1939,paris in 1922, Manhattan in 1910, Berlin 1939, my home city is still 50,000 shy of its 350,00 peak. I've never seen anyone go into real detail on this matter. As for the choosing to have less children take a look at the of abortions per year, the culture is the problem not the housing. Personally I think bankruptcy is our only hope.

    • You are right about our population. In fact the world population (surprisingly) is predicted to slow down (which surely is a good thing.) There are so many 2nd (or even 3rd or 4th homes - yes, really - l have lived and worked in the next county along which has a similar problem with housing - l personally knew of people who truly had more '2nd homes' than you could count on one hand.) I really don't think constantly building is necessary - just use the current housing stock better - this programme highlighted this when talking about the problem not being as out of control before masses of homes got bought up in 2020. Places like St.Ives are now bringing in tougher rules about 2nd homes - the rest of these places need to have the 'courage' (and honesty) to do the same.

I've seen many people that are pretty normal people become homeless that are now substance abusers or alcoholics. You try living like that without anything to numb it. Especially through winter. I have my own place again now and I'm moving forward but yeah, I did drugs and drank when I was homeless. It made it so much easier to deal with it. That's the reality of it. At first it's easier to deal with, then it starts to get at you. Then you start breaking down slowly and the harder it gets the more it gets at you making it harder still again. And then you get hit by winter which hits your body. You get through it. Move on. Get on with things. Then another winter starts approaching....

I live in an overpriced apartment (flat) for $1450./month. There are no windows to the outside so I never know if it's daylight or dark. My monthly Social Security cheque is $1500. I too am looking into finding an affordable bus or van to renovate into living quarters for one. I don't know how I'll do the renovations by myself at my age and disability but I know I cannot afford to pay to have it done even though I do know how to do it myself. I too live in a beach tourist area where the shop help and food service workers are paid minimum wage. I guess they have partners or family to live with. This was a basically affordable area where you could buy a small home that needed some work for $150K but that has more than doubled in six years. I despair for what the next generation will have to deal with but I am more concerned with getting through the remainder of my life with a roof over my head.

  • I live in filey in North Yorkshire , its a very small seaside village but every year we are inundated with holiday makers, we have huge static caravan parks all around us but so many houses now belong to second home owners so they have taken all the house that locals would be able to rent. They rent them out during the summer and they stand empty the rest of the year it's disgraceful we have businesses we own and kids in school etc but can't find a property to rent. The council need to stop people being allowed to buy second homes here , if they want a holiday home buy a bloody static home on the parks which are designed for that and leave our homes alone.

  • Homelessness is a massive problem everywhere. I left the wife last year due to domestic abuse & lived in a Mini for 3 months. I work & earn the most I've ever earned although it's only a bit above minimum wage. I could rent a 1 bed flat where I live for 3 weeks wages. The 4th weeks wage would hopefully cover the extortionate bills & fraudulent claims such as council tax but that's not a given. So, I work 50-60 hours a week to live in a box & rely on a food bank to eat with nothing left for any kind of pleasure whatsoever. Can someone, anyone, make that make sense to me??? What that is, is modern day slavery whith chains you can't see. While I lived in the mini I saved & bought a van which I now live in full time. I still work & it works for me. I love the way I live now but if anything happens to my van, I'll be street homeless, losing everything, again, for the 5th time! I don't do poor me, I just work hard to make my life how I want it to be & try to help others. If you see a homeless person speak to them. Acknowledge they are there ffs. The worst part of street homeless for me, is being invisible to the flag waving virtue signallers. You'll take in a Ukranian from a fake war but can't bare to even look at the homeless guy, sat freezing outside Tesco!

  • My county in Scotland is currently subject to an huge amount of housing development. Council needs this as its the only way to get some social housing built and they get high council tax. Who can afford these new houses? Not me or anyone I know. They are being built on top of mines and on flood plains and our countryside is quickly disappearing. The new home owners seem obsessed with having a view of the nearby hills from their back garden. I guess losing good farmland, disturbing what remains of our ancient woodland , losing open, quiet spaces, putting even more pressure on stretched resources and changing the nature of communities is worth it for a view. Saying that, all of our farms seem to do better from farm shops and glamping than from farming. Its a sad state of affairs. Rents are extortionate and of course oin the rural part of the county it's all holiday accommodation. Air BnB started as a way for people to make income from a spare room, now it' s a nightmare.

  • Stop importing cheap labour. Stop minimum pay. Stop topping up minimum pay with universal credit . Encourage people to work. Reduce the tax burden. We all suffer the same inflation. So the same pay rises in pounds shillings and pence. Not by percent. . The pay gap has to be closer.

    • When pay rises were given as an amount of money guess who complained! The labour party and unions. £2.50 increase a weeks rent was prohibitive, but £2.50 increase in wages was not enough!

    • @@Volcano-Man I don't know who brought in pay rises as a percentage. But it is clearly wrong. What the lowest paid get in £sp. Should go to the top. A survey on the growing pay gap was an eye opener. A manager of a medium sized factory earned 50% more than the average factory worker. That was 1970. Today he is over a thousand times the pay of the average worker. When a ceo can earn five million in five years but gets twenty nine million in bonuses. 34 million in five years. Think about it.
