Hello everyone. To answer the main question, yes I have already done an episode on Superstar Limo. I will be going back and redoing some of my old videos every now and then to give them the same research and production value as the new ones. This video is over twice as long as the original, because I was able to find so much more information and footage.

The muppets renovating the ride as time went on was a cute concept, if I rode Superstar Limo and saw a muppet in a bulldozer running over a sign while exclaiming that the ride is horrible, it’d make me giggle

I love how painful the Drew Carrey segment was. 7 actors trying hard to look excited and trying even harder to stay awake.
I know this is from three months ago, but I am literally in the comments right now because that segment is happening and it is too painful for me to watch. 🤣

Drew was so excited before and so visibly let down afterwards that if I were a slightly more cruel person it might be the funniest thing on earth to me. The underwhelmed “wow”s at seeing all the figures really sent me. And then Ryan saying Drew’s looked like Robert Zemeckis. Priceless
As soon as he mentioned Paparazzi chase I was like "oh....oh no" and realized *exactly* what killed this ride.

I'm pretty certain that the phrase "California Adventure, a California-themed theme park to be located in the already California-themed California" is my absolute most favourite of any in Disney-related criticism history.

The rides are fine. It's standing in line for 90 minutes before you get on that isn't fun. They just sell a ticket to anybody will buy one and nevermind that they don't actually have enough rides for all the people. It's more of a live-action line simulator occasionally interrupted by rides.

@@AtrocityEquine01 The Guardians skin over the ride is actually loads of fun. Even if I miss the Twilight Zone aesthetic, the random elements (one of twenty different '70s-'80s songs can play during the ride, the ending cinematic has several different tiny alterations) make it better for revisiting.
It is literally unfathomable to me that the same company who now monopolizes the entertainment industry was at one point ok with making a 4 minute long theme park attraction where all you do is point at goofy looking puppets and go "wow that looks like the guy from Home Improvement"

Honestly at much as I disliked him during those years at least he took chances and had his team under him have original ideas, until this current team.
If I had such bad ideas...I wonder what could possibly be the difference between him and I.. ..?
This one you really can’t put the blame squarely on him, if the unfortunate accident of Princess Diana didn’t occur this ride probably would’ve been really good for a simple dark room ride

@@MrStGeorgeIllawarra Super late to the game, but I'm rewatching Defunctland from the beginning and it's fascinating how much the (not-remade) S1 videos make jabs at Eisner that you wouldn't see in the newer ones. It definitely gives the impression of Perjurer gaining respect for Eisner despite -- and perhaps because of? -- his bad, risky, yet creative decisions, even if he did lose his guts there near the end of his tenure at Disney. It's been really cool, and shaped my own feelings about Eisner as the show's gone on. (edited for readability/clarity)

I feel like removing paparazzi would’ve been enough to keep people from thinking of Diana. Just say you’re running late and need to get there fast and have the post ride picture be y’all arriving or maybe have a gag where you get a ticket because of a red light camera.

They should have done that, even if they weren't renovating it into a Muppets ride.
They should add a mini Disney land within California Adventure, since that’s also a classic part of visiting California. Of course, this would necessitate a miniature California Adventure within California Adventure, and a micro California Adventure within the mini California Adventure within the real California Adventure within California.

That actually sounds like something that would make me interested in California Adventure.
That the idea of amusement park theme based on a kitsch vision of the locality is funny and maybe even a mind-blowing concept to some people seems much stranger to me than “California Adventure.” I mean, Disneyland has had a “Main Street USA” since it was built and has had a lot of Americana like “Rivers of America” for decades. “An America-themed attraction in an already America-themed America.”

Watching the cast of The Drew Carey Show attempt to look excited and then slowly give up was the highlight of this video.
Seeing Colin Mochrie at the beginning was so weird. I was half expecting him to start shouting at Eisner about how the scene was crap and that they needed to change something.

I can't believe they aired it - the way their energy just drops like an avalanche during the ride was amazing.
Rosie pretends to fall asleep and then has a look of someone who's been wrongfully imprisoned.
Drew couldn't even muster any genuine interest in the ride he APPEARED in. Admittedly, by that point he'd heard Ryan make the "Drew's got a lot of money" joke on "Whose Line" about a gajillion times, so it would take a better actor than Drew to fake any excitement.
Are we just gonna ignore the fact that Eisner wanted to buy a haunted boat and turn it into a resort?
I wish it was haunted, the only haunting thing was that you could hear your neighbors through the air ports. If Disney had bought the Queen Mary, the boat would be in better shape than it is, I wanted to feel like it was 1930's, not that the boats interior hadn't been fixed since then.

Yeah, I don't like imagining a bunch of kids going to a new Disney resort, only to have to deal with a bunch of ghosts. I'm glad that didn't end up happening.

Michael Eisner was shockingly competent in those commercials. He's not an actor but has this strange charisma. I perceive it as earnestness and that's why it kind of works.

Eisner (somewhat reluctantly) also hosted the Wonderful World of Disney TV show and had to take acting classes to prepare for it. Apparently he was very awkward on camera during early screen tests but he got much better since then.
The cast of the Drew Carey show touring California Adventure, while Smash Mouth plays in the background, and a rolling TV scroll to win tickets to an NSYNC concert. The most 2000's segment ever.
They also chose what shortly after ended up becoming probably the most ubiquitous anti-Disney song ever. It's so ironic that it really did set the tone for what the ride was.

I mean, two of the stars were people they could run into at the Comedy Store any time, and one was actually one of them. Probably not the most star-studded experience.

The fact that Michael Eisner expected guests to be blown away by lifeless animatronics of a depressed Cher and other fading 90s celebrities has convinced me that the entire Disney executive board were either secret sadomasochists or hopped up on industrial levels of bath salts to greenlight such an abortion of an attraction.

They can only afford to do that because of how profitable they were during recent decades (which was maybe _half_ because prior acquisitions turned out to be goldmines).
The original concept for Superstar Limo actually sounds fun...but yeeeeeeah, it's pretty much the definition of "too soon". They happened to have really bad luck with that one.

I had the misfortune to ride this attraction during a cast & crew event days before the park opened. My wife and I were dumbfounded when we exited the ride. I could not believe how bad it was.
Please tell me it wasn't a _paid_ cast & crew event.
That’s why I wouldn’t even go to DCA until after the renovation. I just couldn’t do that to Walt.
I also went on this ride when it first opened. We had no idea that there would be a photo taken of us while on the ride. (I remember vaguely the flash from the ride’s camera being masked within the multiple flashes of the cut out fans and paparazzi supposedly taking photos of you.) The unexpected photo they got of me and my boyfriend was hilarious as we both had our hands covering our mouths with a look of absolute shock on how bad the ride was. At that moment I wondered if corporate would see these pictures because it said everything. I really wish I would have bought that photo.

As soon as you started talking about that limo chase concept I was like "oh god no" Not too dissimilar imo from when Lilo and Stitch was in production and there was a scene where they hijacked a plane and flew it through a city, narrowly dodging skyscrapers. Then 9/11 happened and they changed it
At least the movies was about an alien monster learning the value of friendship and not the plane hijacking. The change didn't require _that_ much effort, just a bunch of animators working overtime to animate an entire new scene.
The problem with something like this is it ages terribly once the celebrities involved stop being famous. You need people who are world-famous and unlikely to stop being so. Like how many people outside America know who Regis Filbin is? I certainly don't.
And even then, what's the extent of interest in him other than 'hey, there's regis philbin' and forget just as quickly you saw him?

This is the second video from this channel that I've seen. I'm blown away by the quality of the production. What really surprised me was one detail. Perjurer mentions the death of "Diana, Princess of Wales." That may seem small, but he actually called her by her real title. Almost no one does. The newspaper headlines he shows mention "Princess Diana." She was never "Princess Diana." She would always correct people who called her that. She was either "Lady Diana" or "Diana, Princess of Wales": it was only an honorary title. While this is a detail, it shows an attention to detail that I've rarely seen anywhere. Again, I'm truly impressed.
The moment you hear the words “high speed” , “chase” and “paparazzi” you know where this is going...

I feel like a lot of people commenting about this aren't actually from California and don't quite understand exactly how big it is. Case in point: Driving from Anaheim to San Francisco is over 400 miles and takes about seven hours. Not exactly a day trip, and that only covers about half the length of the state with no time for stops. You'd need at LEAST two weeks (and a lot of money) to really get the full "California Adventure" the old-fashioned way.

Yeah def one of the (many) problems with that is how much the big-name actors work together and know each other. For them, it was like if you went on the ride and one of the statues was of Chris, the accountant at your office. They can't laugh or be impressed or anything because (among other reasons) they've probably met a lot of the people they're being shown. The funniest part is the sudden cut to them leaving the building and immediately deciding to go somewhere else lol.

Just so we're clear: Eisner wanted to make the famously haunted Queen Mary, the ship where a bunch of people died during the wartimes, into a family theme park?

I mean other than those on that one ship that the Queen Mary collided with who were then cut up by her propellers, there's not much haunted about her. I personally don't care about the haunted stuff I'm just interested in her a ship. She's the last surviving Cunard Ship before the modern Cunard Queens and the last surviving connection to the White Star Line other than the S.S. Nomadic. The Queen Mary was only completed because the British Government gave Cunard funds to finish her on the terms that the WSL and Cunard merge. The Queen Mary's sister ship, the R.M.S. Queen Elizabeth burned down in the 70s, so the Queen Mary really is the last remnant of the old Cunard. The art-deco style of her interiors is super cool and very interesting for an ocean liner of the QM's size.

I remember riding this with my family not long after launch. The snapshot of us was the whole group just staring ahead with bewildered expressions; I’d like to imagine that was at least one factor in this getting canned.

A Poster said something like,"My boyfriend and I went on this ride shortly after launch and we saw a flash, but we just assumed it was one of the "Fans," in the ride taking a picture of you. After the ride, we realized our picture was ACTUALLY taken and we had our mouths covered in absolute shock in our photos on how bad that ride really was. I wish I had bought that photo!" 🤣

@@xaviersaavedra7442 Eh, that makes a little more sense, since you can't find all of the US in one place. The problem with California Adventure as it was originally designed was that they had imitations of attractions that were less than a day's drive away.

Maybe this would make sense in Florida, a state that is not California and tens of thousands of miles away from everything in California...but a California themed amusement park in California seems redundant.

"Cartoonish" is too good of a word for this. When I think Cartoon I think of sweet, charming, wacky, and colorful characters that love to entertain and make you laugh. This was uncanny, disturbing, cheap, and narcissistic celebrity kitsch.

This is a comfort episode for me. I watch it so often. And every single time the choice to make the flowerbed look like a pool becomes more and more deranged to me.
Just the whole impetus of California Adventure is so cynical and uninspired: "Build fake, miniature versions of real things to to keep people from going to enjoy those real things". It takes corporate douchebaggery at it worst to come up with that.
It's kinda what our world has become though, hasn't it? Amusement parks in themselves are sad approximations of things that can (and should) be experienced in nature without so much effort. Or expense.
People dont go to theme parks for real stuff, they go for the fun things you cant experience irl.

Aw. The original "Super-Star Limo" ride sounds stupendous; it's a shame it got ruined. I mean, who doesn't love a good horror ride? The original version shown in this video is gorgeous, even better than a "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" or "Nightmare On Elm Street" horror ride.

I had an early preview ticket to California Adventure in 2000 (soft opening, I think) and went on this ride. The on-ride videos of everyone's faces at the end of the ride was priceless and said everything. Everyone had either a sour look or a disgusted look on their faces. In 2000-2001, CA Adventure was really disappointing and one could see every attraction within 3 hours even with heavy crowded days. It was truly horrible.
Disney had a strange phase in the mid to late 2000s, but I'm glad history has not repeated itself with tacky and cursed attractions at Disney Parks.

I've seen monsters less scary than this!" - Gonzo unironically liking the ride - Piggy trying to take over as the superstar at the end - Rizzo making snide jokes the whole time - Sweetums hauling in a big setpiece or sign and humming before greeting the audience "Oh! Hey, you guys! Just wait 'till you see what we're making!" - Statler and Waldorf as you get off: W: You might hate this ride now, but just you wait! As a resident of Anaheim I remember visiting the park when it first opened with my family and my mum was PISSED that there were so few rides throughout the park. It was essentially just store after store with too many restaurants.
I literally started uncontrollably cackling for a few moments at the prospect of Disney being at a point where THEY had to worry about someone buying THEM out. What kind of world would we be in if they HAD gone out of business, though?
Maybe we would see more of Po than Mickey?
I am now imagining an alternate universe where DreamWorks (both live-action and animation studios) owns Marvel, Star Wars, and the entirety of 20th Century Fox, whereas Disney is a modestly successful but consistently struggling company owned by Comcast.

I always loved the more nature-y parts of California Adventure like Soarin’ (probably because I’m from California lol) but I’m glad they turned the pier into Pixar Pier. No sense having a boardwalk-themed park when people can just drive a few extra hours to go to a real boardwalk in Santa Cruz.

The fact that the most obvious thing was how immediately dated the whole ride would be didn't occur to any of them is so sad.
Eisner was all about maximizing profits, spending as little as possible and still getting people through the gates, its a horrible business model but quintessentially 90s. Reality tv shows are the same concept, they cost nothing to make so as long as someone is watching its profitable. The idea of pulling displays from Disney stores to stick in a ride is so Eisner, he was that cheap. Most construction in the Eisner era was exactly what this was -- painted on plywood. My dad did some construction in MK, he did the original shopping village, which was kind of dated and not Disney branded, so Eisner's solution, put up plywood facades and paint Disney characters on it. Just recently it got a complete renovation, a little overdue, but at least Eisner's plywood is gone.
They should have called it the 1996 Hollywood Limo Experience, the fact it was still running in 2001 is beyond sad.
they did it in other areas - all of the attractions in the wonders of life pavilion either starred or were voiced by then-popular SNL cast members, like hans and franz, who were dated within a few years.

They must have known it would get dated, but they probably expected that they would have to replace some of the figures and references over time as those people became more irrelevant. But instead of that, the entire thing was a flop from the very beginning.

I took my kids to California Adventure after I was laid off from my job at Airborne Express. We had a blast. Stayed at a hotel across the street, went on The Tower of Terror and other rides, saw The Muppets in a 3D show, even visited the boardwalk each day as you could get in without tickets. Never heard of the Limo ride until watching this video.
Having all star in the background while the ticker talks about an nsync concert in that clip is...MAN that's a product of the times.
