Delhi: Woman in Seven Months Coma Gives Birth Normally | ISH News

No form of love can ever beat the love of a mother, and this has now been proved after a medical miracle that happened in the capital city of Delhi. In an extremely surprising & hard to believe incident, ​​a woman in a coma for the last seven months in AIIMS trauma centre, after sustaining serious head injuries in an accident, delivered a healthy baby last week. The 23-year-old woman named Shafiya was brought to AIIMS on 1st April.Shafiya was 40 days pregnant at the time of the accident. After initial treatment in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, she was referred to AIIMS trauma centre. Notably, she also underwent four neurosurgical operations in recent months during hospitalisation.
On 22nd October, she gave birth to the child by normal route. An ultrasound scan was done when she was 18 weeks pregnant confirmed that her baby was healthy. At present, the woman is still unconscious. According to Dr Deepak Gupta, a neurosurgeon, Shafiya has a 10-15 percent chance of regaining consciousness. A lot of discussion was held in her first and second trimester of pregnancy on whether the doctors should terminate her pregnancy or continue the pregnancy, as the mother was still unconscious. As no abnormalities were noted in the baby with serial level 2 ultrasound examinations, the medical team suggested the option of continuing pregnancy to the family.It should be noted that the final decision to terminate the pregnancy in view of the mother's condition was left on the family. The family decided to continue the pregnancy subsequently. Even the doctors at the AIIMS facility in Delhi termed this incident as highly uncommon, which has not been witnessed by most of the doctors during their entire career. A Neurosurgeon mentioned that he has not heard about such a miracle in his 22 years long career as a neurosurgeon.
