Roanne van Voorst is an anthropologist, researcher and an author.
Given that people are already struggling to find partners in the modern world, what does the future of love have in store? Is it AI girlfriends, rent-a-friends and sex robots? Or a return to something more natural?
Expect to learn what is happening with modern sexuality, what the future of sex work may look like, whether polyamory is going to become more popular, why so many young people aren’t having as much sex as they used to, what it's like to go to a sex doll brothel, what a better definition of love is, what it's like to be in a virtual relationship and much more…

And with all the "adult videos" and live performances on the internet, we can easily find 20+ body types that perfectly fit our genetic desires. I personally have a favorites folder filled with over 100 "body types" that fit my ideal. I tried to keep this comment as PG rated as possible LOL.

    • Be an amazing husband and there's zero chance a woman leaves you. The bar from our male contemporaries is so laughably low that it's not even hard. These just sound like excuses from men who don't want to do the work, but expect a woman to stick around. That's just not how it works fellas. Graduate from a whiney boy and become a proper man. Stop watching porn and playing video games, get in good physical shape, learn to communicate, be honest, become reliable. Do those things and no woman in their right mind would risk giving you up.

  • This topic is very interesting. I can't help but think that as AI and robotics improve exponentially in the next few years, a large cohort of people are absolutely going to turn to these relationships, especially considering that so many people are starved for intimacy yet turned off by dating.

  • I was at a bookstore yesterday in London, browsing through a book on Japan in the travel section, a woman then came to stand right across from me about 3feet away on the other side of the wooden table where the books were placed, I looked up, and even though we were in close proximity, at not 1 point did she even entertain the prospect of any connection, after about 30 seconds I decided to talk to her, she then looked at me for a split second and then walked off. I was wearing my favourite shirt and had just been to the gym, had a great conversation with a Swedish guy earlier that was sat opposite me in my favourite coffee shop and I was feeling sociable. None of this seemsled to matter and Im now noticing that women make less of an effort than ever, especially in my country of the UK. It was never this bad pre covid, where I could at least meet women and they would be willing to give me a chance. No wonder some men are feeling like they mihht have to resort to robots and A.I to get some form of connection with women.

It was patriarchy that basically forced a one on one marriage on women, mostly because women didn't have any other choice. But outside of forced monogamy, it's most women going for the top 10% males and the rest of the men in the bottom. That's just the reality that society doesn't want to accept.

I see a growing divide in my life between friends who are constantly struggling to meet ends meet, with ADHD and spending all their time on tick tock and games. And then others who mostly keep off social media, really dislike short form content, and seem to be much more financially secure. Feels very much like the shepherds and the sheep. Bringing that into more and walks of human life is going to make many more serfs. Ever driving the wedge between the rich and poor.

  • are men in English-speaking countries expected to compete in the game no matter what? even as the chance of success is constantly reduced? and the reward is lower and lower. All I've ever heard is: men should try harder, give more. But not every man can become way above average. That's just impossible. We're pretty close to men have to be perfect. Why would anyone expect that to happen? So, here we are, a whole lot of men who can't compete or just don't want to anymore. OK. What else was going to happen? We're the English-speaking countries supposed to be filled with perfect Super Men? Because that's what these women want. As long as they're not hurting anybody, aren't they allowed to find a little happiness any way they can? Most men are expected to live with touch deprivation and complete isolation from society. Is it not ok for these men to find the best alternative they can? It seems healthier to find an alternative and quit playing a game that most aren't allowed to win, than live a depressed life of constant failure in a society that wants them to fail. To the men who look at themselves in the mirror and say 'I'm a winner' good for you. I really do hope you win. But, for the rest of us; you've got to do whatever you can It's just the way the game is now. So whatever. Peace

Men might be more lonely (debatable), but women get a lot more mileage out of just talking at someone while that someone gives minimal feedback beyond emotional mirroring. A surprising number of men seem to be the same way, but I don't think it's a majority.

    @saikimayu@saikimayu11 күн бұрын
    • I think you're missing the part that women want that PLUS the other stuff. AI may listen to them, but it won't give them money without them putting in work. It won't take them out and give them experiences. It won't protect them. A boy bot would have to be VERY advanced to come close to replacing a man. Meanwhile, a fem bot just needs to cook, clean, say something motivational and lay on the bed. Throw some skin on a Teslabot, add a speaker and some lady parts, and we're there.

    • Yeah, this is the one comment I've read on this video that makes sense in my life. People are in lots of different situations, but for me life is great single. An emotionally and physically satisfying relationship that didn't come with drama and inconvenience would be great, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't exist. The drama and inconvenience appears to be the price of admission for the emotional and physical fulfillment. Though having those 2 things would certainly enhance my life, it's good enough now to not feel compelled to accept the inevitable tradeoffs. 85% happy and 15% unfulfilled or 90% happy 5% and 10% in emotional turmoil/annoyance? I'll take the 85 and call it good.

Experiences with real humans involve the secretions of bonding hormones i.e. oxytocin, vasopressin which AI hasn't come out to replicate in these artificial experiences, yet. And human experiences are messy. It involves dealing with the vicissitudes of life which these "frictionless, efficient" AI experiences don't provide (as of yet).

    @v9b23j@v9b23j11 күн бұрын
    • Of course you have overlooked one key area of psychological science that should be staring you in the face. Children get attached to objects like dolls , teddys and blankets and research shows they have an intangible attachment. Even when replacing the toy or blanket for one that is identical the children refuse the copy and prefer the original blanket or toy they was previously attached to. You could promise the child that you'd duplicate their blanket atom by atom and most would refuse a copy and still believe that the blanket they originally had was more valuable , but this value comes from thin air, it's not a tangible quality that anyone can point to. Almost as if the blanket is a person, a character that dies if it was replaced. I think adults are not actually separated from children to such a degree that these intangible attachments just go away completely. And so her experience with sex dolls is like that of a child looking at another childs toy, it's not theirs, it's not something they are attached to and so it is an object. However to an adult who has become attached to that object the object has value .

It's like some kind of game is taking place where people are expected to read each other's mind lest they're not 'made' for each other. Just figure out what you're looking for and tell people when you meet/date them, and if they can't be that, ok, no harm, no foul. It's better to be alone that to feel unloved in a relationship.

Not based on research, just observing the way things have progressed over the last few years, but I think it will end up taking longer than expected to get polished versions of the AI-related things she experienced in her research (though I'd love to be wrong). However, I wouldn't be surprised to see maybe a proper real-time AI (voice) chat companion with customizable photorealisitc avatars within 5-10 years? Sort of like what Replika is but way more advanced. The actual humanoid, can't-tell-its-a-robot robot, probably longer. Maybe 15-20 years to get some Ex-Machina-esque androids walking (or canoodling) about? Or maybe we just get to some plugin, Neuralink-Matrix type thing before that all goes down. Again, would love to be wrong and have all this stuff get here within a couple years, just to experience another historical technological turning point (for better or worse). For me, the smartphones and maybe streaming services were the last ones, and those were over 15 years ago.

Large tech companies would know practically everything about you which would make it incredibly easy to manipulate you. This can be done by them, 3rd party that buys data or hackers. High value men will still be available in roughly the same numbers as before. It’s the bottom percentage of men that aren’t going to form relationships with women anyway that will benefit from this tech. I don’t know why that upsets people. Women should be glad these unattractive guys won’t bother them anymore. Their lives will get easier. And men that don’t want an AI girlfriend shouldn’t care about this one way or the other. There’s nothing wrong with feeling indifferent about an issue.

The ones that Alpha men end were never really relationships, let's no lie to ourselves that they were. When talking about the disparity in relationships the majority of men have have very little attention from women. But I agree there will be a lot of lonely middle age Millennial women. But they chose it, they created the standard and are holding to it, 6 foot, 6 figure, 6+ inch, 6 pack, 6 on rotation. We had a system to keep an orderly society it was called Patriarchy and monogamous marriage. But it's gone and its not coming back, mainly because women don't want it, The ones that do it's only later in life to clean up their mess, but they end up divorcing anyway so only an idiot would take that deal.

  • Everyone must ask themselves if they value independence or dependence more. My fear is that governments and corporations are promoting compliance/dependence in the sense of a drug and indoctrination as the ultimate human value - belonging to something bigger than yourself. How is this any different from Secular Religion or the Matrix or the Borg? People have personal relationships and families, but that is not good enough for governments and corporations that seek to control every aspect of every person's life. AI is just the tip of the spear of their latest attempt to accomplish this. The biggest question in future anthropology is - Is the independence, dependence spectrum a normal distribution or bi-modal were independence is SOLELY for the elites?

  • Here is one perhaps very big positive thing I haven’t heard discussed - it’s my belief that sexually frustrated males create massive problems in societies. I think religions that encode one male to many women reinforce this, and I think having some outlet for the Napoleon complex of all the incels will create a possible outlet for that sexual frustration. There’s a drive to conquer within most men, and if it doesn’t manifest sexually it can do a lot of other pathological things.

    @shane5003@shane50039 күн бұрын
    • Agreed, although Chris has talked about this earlier. We might actually absolutely need porn etc. so the increasing amount of frustrated men won't turn to violence.

  • So many stereotypical statements. Men blaming women, women blaming men. Perhaps big part why we got here is because to many following what others say and never finding out WHO THEY ARE as an INDIVIDUAL and what is important to them. Not following all the opinions of others. Knowing yourself and being HONEST about it can make the difference in the relationships you form. To many want perfection and that is not reality.

  • When the sex bots get to the point of being able to sit down with you, watch a movie, and intelligently discuss it, or to be able to interface with game system and play alongside you, then they will cross a relationship line that many women will have trouble competing with. Any woman can starfish. Not all women can bond over a movie or enjoy a game with a man. When it gets to the point where sexbots can do reaction videos on YT or make social commentary... that's the line that will probably be crossed first, rather than having bots that overcome physical dexterity and strength barriers.

    @Raptanax@Raptanax5 күн бұрын
    • When sex bots get to that point, they will no longer be just sex bots but relationships bots, and plenty of women will want them. There will be no women having troubles competing for men with sex bots, but a significant percentage of women will leave the dating market in favor of bots as well. The resulting problem is of a completely different nature: relationships with bots don't produce children. And many people, who actually want children, will favor child bots over real, biological children, too. Because a bot will look exactly one's type, have exactly the personality type one likes the most, share all of one's hobbies and interests completely, deliver exactly the type and frequency of sex one wants, and do all the chores one wants them to do without ever messing up. No actual human, whether man or woman, can ever measure up to that. The society will change drastically and completely. 99% of jobs will disappear forever; bots and AI will do them. And most people will spend their lives surrounded by bots from birth to death. Because bots will take over child-rearing, too (children are bothersome, and perfect bots will be much better parents than fallible real people), and one day probably also childbearing (artificial wombs; both men and especially women will want them, because pregnancy is like a disability and giving birth is extremely unpleasant). The world population will strongly decrease, and in addition to bot-loving city dwellers, small communities of people, rejecting technology, will live pre-industrial lives in the wilds.
