  • Thanks for watching this look into the Master Sword's abilities! There are so many I couldn't even cover them all in detail without this video being insanely long, but another huge one is the power to break the curse on Link during Twilight Princess! A huge thank you again to Heroic Replicas for sending me such a beautiful sword, I still genuinely can't believe it!

    • Guns4 aghost Grass is literally child’s play, and a blade that’s supposed to take down bone and clash with other steels better be tempered well enough to withstand pottery or the occasional accidental wall hit. The sacred-extra-damage-dealing properties of the Master Sword are canonically pretty terrible, especially for its hype. And in OoT the “extra damage” has more to do with a teen’s vs prepubescent’s force behind it. Which, other than being able to jump around very fast, OoT Link is one of the WORST trained Links. So, the gods putting him under to age him up really goes a looooong way in saying how weak that particular Link is pre&post the 7 Years, and how skilled WW Link actually is since he only had maybe an hour of formal instruction. Sure he BECOMES a decent swordsman throughout his journey, but it’s mostly using his speed and shield to his advantage vs how he wields his main weapon. (And yeah I’m picking on OoT Link, but he’s the one that got put under, while the oldschool 2D Links (ages never stated) did not...but did a similar Just Slash&RUN!!! “style”) Basically, the swords generally do all the work (gameplay technology aside), and where the Master Sword is supposed to be the Superior Sword it...kinda fails. And is comparable to other midpoint swords if a third (or fourth) upgrade is available. Really all it has going for it is Absorbing Stuff (which Sealing&Anchoring is an offshoot of) and...it’s pretty flakey even when the Sage Batteries aren’t submerged in water so to speak

  • In the final battle in Skyward Sword, when Link strikes down Demise, he actually calls down lightning on his sword to empower it. In fact throughout that whole battle Link can enhance his Skyward Strikes with lightning. This is very similar to the Ether Medallion's animation, lending some more credibility to the fact that these powers are something inherent to the Master Sword.

    • Not necessarily. Link fights Demise in a Realm of Demise’s choosing, that Demise himself takes power from. However, the Master Sword’s basically capable of absorbing anything and everything-dragon flames, Sages’ prayers, Master Ore, etc. Essentially that’s all the Sealing aspect of the sword is, and how it’s been able to be manipulated to, say, serve as an Anchor for various other Seals (like the time bubble in WW, arguably channeling the Sage of Time’s spell.) However, anything the sword absorbs to strengthen itself isn’t a one-off thing: the sword is often retempered, and the Sages’ prayers have to basically be continuous. But in Demise’s Realm? Sure he thought he basically had Link in a snare. But the sword basically turned Demise’s perfect trap against him by absorbing the properties of that environment, too. And of course the sword itself was specifically designed to be able to absorb Demise’s malice to seal it. But like the things that can be used to temper the blade are not permanent, neither is the blade’s main use as a seal: the edges “dull” and the seal weakens. It’s not a flawless design, but...a bit more Glitch&Feature as one and the same?

    • This phrase always reminds me of a small series i liked as a child called "Papyrus". It was set in ancient Egypt and basically focused on the conflict between Horus and Seth, with Seth imprisoning Horus in a sarcophargus. The other gods then chose a young fisherman called Papyrus and gifted him after a trial of courage and wits with the Sword of Horus, which had one characteristic quirk. Quote: "Remember, the Sword of Horus is only as strong as your own courage." If Papyrus was frightened the sword became dull and useless, the moment he mustered the courage to face the foe, the blade became sharp again and cut through. Not sure, which of them came first and if one was inspired by another, but this just came into my mind.

He essentially said the exact same thing about the residents of Termina in terms of whose soul was inside the mask, so maybe that’s why the fierce deity resembles link? • Here's something often overlooked when dealing with "ancient weapons", just because someone created something doesn't mean they conceived of every possible use for it. It could very well be that the medallions in LttP were the products of sages between OoT and LttP that studied the sword and came up with new ways to utilize its power. Technology evolves over time. New people edit and overhaul existing designs. It really shouldn't be any different with magical items. We even see in LBW that the blacksmiths at the time are capable of either upgrading the Master Sword's blade edge, or at the very least repairing the wear and tear of the ages so much that it looks like upgrading. New sages and blacksmiths probably can't (and really shouldn't be able to) vastly increase the immense power that Hylia and the Golden Goddess put into the blade, but there's no reason to think that they couldn't essentially make it more efficient. And add bells and whistles.

  • Something worth noting: At the end of Trial of the Sword in BotW, the monks at the end each have their own unique pose that other Shiekah monks throughout the game don't have. Each one is actually a pose from one of Ocarina of Time's 6 sages just before they give Link their medallion. It's fitting, since they bestow the full power of the Master Sword upon Link.

  • One thing that I find interesting is how the Master Sword keeps it's strength in BotW. Instead of being a means of holy and temporal power, being energized by prayer, the sword is referred to as a sentient being. Instead of needing to find sages, the player is told that the Master Sword will forget it's purpose and become useless for a time if they use it too much. Yeah you won't quite be able to index it so easily, but.. well, hmm, now that I think of it, maybe ONE weighted wing and one unweighted would help with that. that's probably a stupid idea still, most versions of it don't have significantly sharp downward points on the wings so that part is fine I think.

When he picks up the elemental rods in BoTW, items which their holders can use to warp the very weather, he can just kinda fling their magic out as basic sword slashes. It does make me wonder though if the bow of light is also an object of similar origin as it tends to only be manifested through a fully awakened Zelda. It also might be the type of thing Girahiem is or Gannon's trident. I just really like crafting systems and learning how they can be manipulated so I wouldn't mind a spin off game that basically shows various methods of construction in the Zelda universe.

Then, after seven years, Link is allowed out, wakes up to a Hyrule that could only be described to him as "WTF!?!," and has to correct the entire kingdom like some divine embodiment of Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln and Joan of Arc that would have been absolutely unnecessary if they hadn't made it so that a ten-year-old could get the sword. If the sword is a sort of key that unlocks time and the Hero's Shade being this Link's ancestor, this is a pretty neat and subtle way of channeling the Spirit of the Hero through this Link. I mean, this was one of the final acts performed with this sword before putting it to rest once more. So, when pulling the blade from its pedestal and deciding to test it, I can't help but feel he was experiencing a powerful moment in the sword's history, even if unaware he did so. I could go on about this and theorize for an hour but I think this would be a great addition to the Zelda Secrets series that you could explain better than I ever could. Hope you get to read this and include it in a future video. Love your work!

  • I like this explanation because it gives a reason that the first sword in The Legend of Zelda looks rusted, but can still shoot beams like the Master Sword. In my headcanon, it IS the Master Sword, but the post-apocalyptic world of Zelda and Zelda2 have left it without prayer, and without the strength to mend itself (I mean, you're tying rupees to the ends of sticks to make arrows. Pretty much Fallout over here) But I maintain that you wash the rust off in the waterfall where you get the White Sword, and you complete its blessing by visiting the grave of either a former Link or a Sage that finishes imbuing it. Obviously the designs and whatnot are off, especially with the way the art is drawn and how the Master Sword wasn't even conceptualized until Link to the Past, but I'm rather fond of the theory of having a single weapon that grows stronger with you as you adventure rather than tossing a reliable companion as soon as one prettier and sharper catches your eye. ...One of the reasons I couldn't get into Breath of the Wild... *mumble mumble*...

    @ZackofSpades@ZackofSpades3 жыл бұрын

      @OtakuUnitedStudio@OtakuUnitedStudio2 жыл бұрын
    • It's worth noting that in the end of LttP, which canonically takes place before LoD, it states that the Master Sword sleeps forever, meaning it never reawakens. Maybe the basic sword is the Master Sword, but never awakens because the hope and prayer that fueled it before was gone by then. It certainly paints the first three games as much darker, being a timeline in which the magical world is slowly dying because the Hero of Time failed and the Hero of Legend is aptly named because the legend of the Master Sword ended with him.

It makes me think, if the MS is the lock in this analogy, what powers could the other Medallions of OoT be keys to...? And how does the blue material that comprises the hilt of the MS and the OoT itself - likely to be Timeshift Stones - play into this...?

  • I feel the need to point out that Hylia seems to be the goddess of light *and* time, in that the master sword, imbued with her power, can activate the Gate of Time, purge curses and repel darkness. Temples to Hylia have strong connections to time as a concept, and tend to have motifs of gears. The Gate of Time was crafted for her and is housed in her temple, which later becomes the temple of time. The Gate of time within is then used to create the Sacred Door that's impervious to Ganondorf's advances. I would argue its time-bending properties have to do with the pedestal in which it was housed- hence why those abilities do not exist in games where it's not housed in the Temple of Time- as well as the Gate of Time being activated by the pedestal. The power was not lost, rather, it was never the sword's to hold. The blade only ever acted as a key; be it to the Sacred Realm, to time, to the power of the sages and to the power to seal away evil. That last power, that's not inherent to the sword but rather, to its wielder. A power that is earned through the journey to find the sword and pull it from its pedestal.

  • It's funny you mentioned the Fierce Deity's blade in your promotion, because how you described the master sword at the end as a vessel for the prayers of the people/sages... isn't that the same way the Fierce Deity's Mask is described in Majora's Mask? almost word for word even. There is a saying that a sword is most powerful when it is protecting something, for the Master sword, you could say it is "protecting" all the prayers of the sages and Hylia and the goddess and the safety of the people against the Demons, In this case, all of the beings who were aligned with Demise. In the case of the Fierce Deity's Mask, it's said to be all the hopes and dreams of the People of Termina and the spirits of the masks. And in MM Majora was basically a demon right? Where Hyrule chose to put its prayers into swords, Termina chose to put its prayers into masks. It's an interesting parallel for sure. And perhaps this idea where the strength of something LITERALLY goes up depending on what you use it against and what you are protecting it from seems integral to the world of Zelda: Hyrule, Termina, Heck maybe even places like Lorule and the Twilight Realm. Perhaps what makes the Master Sword so great is that it is something that can withstand the expectations of those Prayers.

  • In aLttP Lore: The Master Sword and the Silver Arrow are the ultimate weapons that can defeat even Ganon himself! In aLttP Gameplay: Double damage. It can shoot sword beams at full health. That's pretty cool, I guess. In OoT Lore: The Master Sword, the Blade of Evil's Bane, was hidden behind the Door of Time by the ancients of Hyrule. It is the gateway to the sacred world where the triforce resides. It can be used as a vessel to travel up and down the river of time. Once again, it, along with the power of the goddess, is the only weapon capable of defeating Ganon. In OoT Gameplay: I mean... you can use the shield with it, so it has that over the Biggoron's Sword? In WW Lore: The Master Sword, the Blade of Evil's Bane, buried in the depths of the sea in a long-forgotten kingdom. You must climb to the top of a tower just to prove yourself worthy to the gods for the right to even walk the lands this blade is hidden within. The blade has been used by a long-forgotten hero to completely stop time in this forgotten land and seal away the power of Ganon. Though its power has grown weak, with the help of the descendants of the sages of ages past, it can be restored to its former glory, finally granting you the ability to stand face-to-face against the King of Evil himself! In WW Gameplay: It does double the damage of the regular sword, that's pretty rad. In BotW Lore: The Master Sword, the Blade of Evil's Bane, is our only hope of defeating Calamity Ganon and saving the world from total chaos! This weapon and arrows powered by ancient shiekah technology are the only way to defeat the guardians Ganon has seized control of. This weapon is powerful enough to allow the hero to destroy an entire army of monsters all on his own. This blade has seen countless battles and still returns to pristine condition with the blessing of the goddess. In BotW Gameplay: Wait, the Master Sword is in this game? OH, it's that weapon that has to recharge every 10 minutes. Pretty sure I have other weapons that deal more damage though...?
