It was after that third Fury fight. That's where he said himself he just wasn't the best. As cringe as the excuses after the second fight were, it at least showed that he was still venomous, still hungry. He couldn't accept not being the best. That's a championship mentality. All champions are somewhat delusional. They have to be. They genuinely do not see themselves losing. After that third fight, he lost it. He hasn't lost his physical ability (evident from that Helenius KO), but he was already moving backwards in that fight. Wilder never does that shit unless forced to.

He thinks he does, but he'll quickly realize he doesn't if it were to ever happen. Unless they didn't see it coming, most people you kill will die with a frightened look on their faces. In close quarter combat, the images of that are seared into your brain forever, which means many sleepless nights and frequent nightmares that are really just you reliving what you've experienced in your dreams. There's much more to it, but if he really wants even a little bit of that, go for it!
