Air compressors are used for a wide range of jobs around your home, garage or shop. When choosing the right air compressor for your needs, there are a few key questions to consider: How will the compressor be used? How much available space do you have? Is portability critical? Mike Finnegan, host of Finnegan’s Garage and Roadkill, walks through the key factors to consider when choosing an air compressor and discusses the difference between psi, cfm and scfm air compressor ratings.

Good points. Been using compressors for 30 years and started before youtube and had to learn all this stuff the hard way.
thats what u get for being old, old man
Great video. Very helpful. I agree the background music noise could go. But still very helpful.
Great advice, makes sense, easy to follow, and please keep "coaching" us, you're great at it. THANK YOU!
This helped me out a lot, thanks!
Mike always delivers!!!!!
Very Important info here folks. I did not know all these particulars when I sent compressor shopping. Bought a small 6 gallon Craftsman to do light garage/hotrod work. Hooked up my die grinder with a cut off wheel and it didn't run for 30 seconds. I had to wait until tank pressure built back up. What a pain in the butt. Looking for a much better one now arming myself with the right knowledge. Thanks for sharing brother. Cheers from Motown/Dearborn.
Very helpful and well-done vid. Thanks for posting it 👍🏽
good point about the hose and scfm tools. TU
Excellent information. Thank you.
Great video and explanation!
I gotta say this commercial was done very very well just a bit of promoting with lots of useful information is great
hey iam a noob when it comes to compressors, can u recommend me couple moudles witch r small and compact for cleaning and dusting of Computers ? and what does it need in order to work beside a wall outlet ? Great vid Btw thanks a lot
Great informative video!! Thx
Great adviceThanks
Great video sir.. What can you advice me to get if I will be painting bike frames? Thank you
Great info but man, nobody wants to listen to that music when being taught something.
True. That’s annoying.
Music is never a good idea. I would rather listen to a compressor running
I noticed in one of your latest videos you had to ditch that compressor when you got a media blast cabinet. At least now you have the type of compressor that men use. LOL! You did provide some good accessory info in this vid. Thanks for that.
Those information is really good I dont know much so i buy a 100psi 3 gallon compressor thinking I can use it for small minor paint job as I spray but it turned out the tank is too small I am sending you this message all the way from South America Guyana
Just got my Campell Hausfeld VT6271. Perfect size and portability for my home. Time to sell the old Husky 30 gallon with a measley 1.7 HP!
thank goodness i just found your upload.... I want to spray paint my car and plan to hand sand, will a 6L oil-less air compressor be enough for the job?
I would like to also add that belt driven compressors are generally more quiet then direct drive ones.
Hay fin test out the scroll compressor from Eastwood and give a review ????
Nice and informative video.
It's unfortunate that Campbell Hausfeld no longer has the same quality people have come to expect from the brand.
U know me too well bro!!! ❤️❤️ weekend Warrior here
Nice video...real nice compressor...noticed the 220v outlet next to it...ouch...but worth it. SCFM + 30% Thank You
Can confirm, I bought the 29 gallon Harbor Freight special and regret not going larger. I am currently using it to sandblast car parts (suspension), and the compressor runs constantly and can't keep up. Using 80 PSI in the line, 150 at the tank, guessing I need at least a 60 gallon.
it's not the tank size that matters it's the pump, a very big pump on a small tank works very well.
Hay I have a 26g made by y’all and it’s not building pressure I used it for about 4 mins :( Thank you for fixing the issue and sending me a replacement!
Please contact our tech service team at 1-800-543-6400 and we can troubleshoot this issue with you.
Campbell Hausfeld I would like to say thank you for your customer service and I appreciate the replacement compressor you’re sending me!
Glad we were able to help!
thanks for the video, I’m confused .... but how do you make sure that the tools we already have (or want to buy more tools) that they are/will be “SCFM” ?? I went to CH’s website and looked at their “air tools” and never saw SCFM listed in their specs sheet for the tools ... so where can we buy SCFM tools - i wanna replace the only 2 tools that i have with SCFM tools. Do we google SCFM tools and it will list the brands that carry/make them ? I’d like to buy all matching brand air tools. Sorry, but YES i am a noob. Please help me understand.
I found a campbell hausfeld 2gallon 100max psi in a marketplace and wondering if its good enough to spray paint a car?
Awesome video!
Thanks this video just made me more confident about my recent purchase of a c&h 80 gal two stage answered a lot of questions for me
Tracyminor1223 u take off wheels?
I’m getting one soon. Gonna be changing brakes so I need somn for my impacts gun and die grinder
That's a nice compressor man

I'm after the smallest, quietest option that can handle spray painting, airbrushing and cleaning. If it can handle nailing and stapling that's good too, but otherwise I already have tools for grinding, cutting and drilling. For spray painting I'm happy to use either HVLP or LVLP.
Good, informative video. Though there are lots of user profiles in between full-time grease monkey and soccer-ball filler. One aspect is portability. What's best if you do both automotive and carpentry with lots of different tools split between shop, outdoors, and house? But in short stints, not full-time.
Two different compressors. Lol
I just wanted to know whats a good tank size thats sufficient to pump tires, other videos never explains that. Thank you for explaining that bro
Pretty much anything. Tires are only run around 30-35 PSI or so. Even cheap compressors will do 125 PSI. The higher the CFM the quicker a compressor will fill large tires, but you don't absolutely need a high CFM for tire filling. That's why you can buy tiny 12v air compressors. Low CFM but they can still handle the PSI required. Just takes them some time to do the job.
honestly one of those little 12v ones that fits in your trunk would work just fine.
This video needs more likes
Is there an advantage to higher horsepower? I have a working 5hp compressor motor from an old rusted tank so will it improve performance if I swap out the 1.5hp motor on a newer compressor with the higher hp motor? Great video.
Interesting to see that since this video he's upgraded to an Eaton 7.5HP 80 gallon compressor. I was trying to find that video again and found this one.
Hello Does air compressor work by pulling the surrounding air in and I plug it in with 120v socket or do I need to do a full install by routing hoses to the outside of the garage etc? Basically how do i install a air compressor? Thank you
Very informative. I actually want to build my own. That being said. I sound proofed my shed so my compressor isn’t taking up space in my garage and or annoying everyone when I wanna work at 1am :D
Don't forget to partition it off so it doesn't get filthy and when painting (if you do that) paint gets in the compressor and destroys it.
Check out a Quincy 350 or 370 or 390 pump. If you get lucky you might find one cheap
Yes Michael, I need to do something like that to my emergency generator without burning it up. lol
Must have a oiless compressor Those are soo noisy I like the oil filled
@@fleadoggreen9062 same.
What kind of aircompreser do I need to press ball-bearing?
Straight to the point no bullshit with only a laid back plug.outstanding man!
Thanks 😊
i just want to paint some wheels. Paint and clear coat. What do you recommend?
Nice video, Mike...I'm also shopping around for a 50Ft., 1/2" heavy duty rubber hose, on a reliable retractable reel, to handle any & all automotive air tools in the garage...what are your favorite 2 hoses on reels? Thanks! :)
Yes Nino I'm filling in for fin just you tube it
Free air delivery FAD is the most important. If the cfm is around 14 take 1/3 off. Will make FAD about 10cfm this is what the compressor will run comfortably at.
I have a 15 year old USA made Campbell Hausfeld 7 hp 60 gallon twin cylinder air compressor still working fine. I could never figure out if you read the oil level with the dip stick all the way in or just touching. I've always used Mobile1 oil. It keeps up with the cabinet sandblaster and painting.
Any time you use a dipstick, you should run that dipstick in as far as it will go to check levels. If it's a screw-in type, screw it in and then unscrew it to check the level. If it's a push-in, push it all the way in. So you read the oil level with the dipstick all the way in.
@@wirenutt57 not "anytime" maybe most of the time but definitely not in every case.
Great product. Buy it!
Hola ,una consulta la marca Campbell hausfeld es americana? O china? Por q aki en Perú quise comprar una compresora de aire de 2hp de 8 galones y en la caja y la máquina dice hecho en china
I got a 60 gal 2 stage 175 psi for tires and blow gun. Basically its a CH, different color rebrand.
I don't understand something. I started watching a lot of videos about compressors, because I was looking to pick up a smaller, portable unit that I could take with me in the truck when I travel to go work on my Dad's house. Watching these videos was the first time I ever heard people telling me that I can't do...something that I have done more than once. You see, my "big" compressor that I don't want to lug around on the road is only a 20 gallon, 4.8 CFM Campbell Hausfeld. And I swear to you, before I upgraded to my current 20V orbital sander, I used a pneumatic orbital sander with that thing all the time. I completely sanded down TWO vehicles for paint, using that 20 gallon compressor and DeWalt pneumatic orbital. Now, granted, the first one was a Jeep CJ. But the second one was my RAM 1500 Mega Cab. The second one is a HUGE vehicle. And I did not have any problems with the motor providing me plenty of air from beginning to end. It is confusing. Why does EVERYONE on the internet seem to believe that you cannot do that job with that compressor?
I've done it with 20 gal, but slower waiting for the compressor to catch up. Actually not that bad if you don't mind the wait. My 20 gal is commercial, 240V.
Perfect.
Are you sure you want to stick to the statement of less pressure in the smaller fittings/hose?
That's pretty cool, I was wondering how big of a compressor I would need when I win the tools from finnagans air tools contest haha
Hi Felix. Thanks for asking. The minimum gallon size to run the full line would be 30-gallons, however, this will vary depending on what tools you are using and what application it is for. What’s a good compressor for mobile detailing?
Are the harbor freight compressors powered by a 32/1 premix 2 stroke? Because that would seem about right....
Video help me select air compressor too good 👍👍👍👍👍
Công ty TNHH - TBCN Vân Long..hv u bought ?
Get a Sailor Beall or Champion as big as you can afford . A T30 Ingersoll Rand is not bad .
Does anybody look at that power plug for the compressor at the start and think why didn't the turn it around so the chord hung straight instead of kinked?
Nice video, what size air compressor do I need to blow out pipes in my inground pool? This is the first season I will close my pool myself.

@Matt Miller what hp is yours cause I need to get one for my pool as well
@Matt Miller when you do it with your shop vac do drain pool water below the jets or just close them off? Thanks
I have had quite a few air compressors in my time but Campbell Hausfeld compressors are the ones that have always let me down. Now I refuse to buy a Campbell Hausfeld compressor. I am currently looking for just a smaller compressor and it will probably be a Makita. Now those compressors rock.
Bought my first CH compressor fifteen years ago and it's still running fine. Had to replace the regulator a few years back but that's it.
well done
Anyone know the best 60 gallon compressor for under $500? For a home garage?
good video my brother
Dude u r god send...
Husky 30 gal 1.7 HP 6.4 scfm at 40 PSI 78dBA vs California 10 gal 2 HP 6.4 cfm at 40 psi 70dBA, which is better? More powerful? I would like to sandblast metal fences (protectors) and paint metal.
Minimum compressor needed to use a sandblaster to remove paint from aluminum?
Nice channel colleagues. regards from StoParts Ltd
Love the structure of this video!
I wanna buy a air bottle Jack can you help me figure out what size compressor I need ?
Good video, I’ve learnt a bit. I will mainly want to use a nail gun and spray paint, but not all of the time. So what PSI and SCFM, also the size of tank. What would you recommend then? 👍👍👍👍
You mean CFM. 6 gallon pancake for nail guns including framing air guns. Spray paint start with 20 gal minimum, 60 gal if you're a serious painter.
@@kimchee94112 cheers for that. Now I know what to buy when the time comes 👍👍👍
Hi I have a craftsman 60 gallon compressor the Pistons cracked on it and was wondering what size compressor pump do you have on yours is there anyway you could send me the model number of that compressor pump very appreciated if you send me that info thank you being that parts do not come out for this compressor anymore so I have to go that way👍
I just want to paint wood. With a air compressor. I have one in the garage I haven't opened in two years time to open it.
I love my Quincy 390 compressor in my basement. 35 CFM @ 560 RPM with a 10hp motor on a 50 amp single phase circuit. If I want to double my CFM all I need to do is purchase a 20 horsepower motor and change the pulley size.
Ha,ha you need 3 phase maybe even 480V.
How many gallons do I need for a hopper doing texture
question, how is it that big Ingersoll-Rand Garage Mate 20 gallon tank and 2 HP packs only 5.5 CFM and little Makita MAC5200 5.5 gallon tank Big Bore 3.0 HP gives 6.5 CFM?
Because Makita is lying and overinflating its numbers. You can only get 2hp max from a 110v circuit.
I have the 5hp compressor like the one Mike has behind him its a 1997 and has been kept drained and the oil has been changed yearly that thing just keeps on running
Yeah... At home I've spent years and years running 30 gallon oil-less compressors and having to run my tools for 60 seconds then wait 10 minutes then get another 60 seconds lol. Terrible. Especially considering at the shop I get to use 150 CFM super compressors. Anywho, this video confirms for me the middle ground I need is a 60 gallon, with around 3-4 hp, wich should do around 10-14 CFM. Thanks for the confirmation.
What's the difference between single stange and dual stage? Also, is there a "general" equation to convert scfm to cfm and vise versa?
Hi Andy. Thanks for asking. Below is some information that helps answer your questions. If you have any additional questions, feel free to email our customer service team by visiting our website: campbellhausfeld.com/?target=contact Stage refers the number of times intake air is compressed in a pump. A single stage compressor compresses intake air one time before sending the air into a storage tank. Two-stage air compressors compress air two times before sending air into a storage tank. A two-stage compressor has a minimum of two cylinders; a low-pressure cylinder (largest) and a high-pressure cylinder (smallest). Air is compressed once in the larger cylinder and then sent through an air cooling tube. Upon reaching the small cylinder, the air is compressed again then sent into a storage tank. Two-stage air compressors produce a larger volume of air at higher pressures than single stage compressors. CFM is air measured when it is pressurized. SCFM, also known as “Free Air”, is air measured when it is not pressurized. SCFM takes into account standard temperature and pressure. CFM is typically referred to as Actual Cubic Feet per Minute. The following formula is used to determine SCFM: SCFM=ACFM (Pa/Ps*Ts/Ta) Pa =Actual pressure, Ps=Standard pressure (14.7psi), Ta=Actual temperature, Ts=Standard temperature (528 degrees Rankine) Here are the equations to convert CFM to SCFM and to convert SCFM to CFM: SCFM=ACFM (Pa/14.7psi)(528 degrees R/Ta) ACFM=SCFM (14.7psi/Pa)(Ta/528 degrees R)
SCFM = "standard" CFM. It is the amount of uncompressed air the compressor sucks in. The compressed air output is a much, much smaller number.
thank you ! sayging that i must be honest to mig self! now i will by the compressor that i need not what i want
Hi, I have a question. is it the compressor or the air lines that I need to look for to get the lug nuts etc. to get the job done on car? Ex if I have a 2.5 gal tank and 1/2” hose and fitting is it enough to get my lugnuts and other bolts done or I have to get bigger tank? Thanks!
Hello,Thanks for reaching out. Both the compressor and air lines should be considered for use with an impact wrench to remove lug nuts. Minimum tank size for an air compressor for this application would be 15 gallon. The ½’ hose would work best for this application. If you have additional questions please feel free to call our customer service team at 800-543-6400 and we would be happy to assist you.Have a great day!Thank you, Campbell Hausfeld
Just buy a cordless 1/2 impact. You don't need air to remove lug nuts.
Doesn’t pressure increase when diameter is reduced? Assuming a constant supply at a lower psi If not, it should be labeled as volume
230 is standers here in Australia 10amp
I will like To purchase a compressor, I have a body shop and I use a lot of tools and recommend me which one is better for me
Turn up the music!!! I’m rockin out!!!
Ok I have a question about Campbell Hausfeld 20 gallon. I think it says it takes a 1/4 fitting. Can I change it so it takes a 1/2 fitting?
Tammy, we spoke with our tech service team and the fitting that is at the switch is a ¼” NPT. The only way to increase this is to purchase an adapter or a another pressure switch with 1/2” ports. We don’t offer one and they do not know if it is even made. If you have any additional questions please feel free to reach out to our Tech Service team at 1-800-543-6400 8:00-4:30 EST
My filter/dryer inputs right to left what's up with that?
i have some questions? im just starting out with air tools. i do car audio fabrication so i only use them for 5 to 10 mins at a time. i really just cut out 6 to 15 inches of plastics here and there or grind down plastics and thin metals. but not for long periods of time. HOW big of a compressor do you think il need and how much psi or cfm? this stuff really confuses me i could use the help lol. and i have small hands so i hate big tools lol i just want a angle grinder and a mini saw. and how long does a tool last say at 100psi on a small 10 gal tank. (if you were too just hold the trigger down) a round about?
Leonie, The best way to size the air compressor would be to see what the SCFM/CFM rating at a given pressure or PSI is for the tool being used. Then you would look for a compressor that produces at least that amount of SCFM/CFM at the given pressure, or more would be even better. Based on your comments it would be best to get at least a 30 gallon compressor.
thank you so much for the help... I'm looking to buy one tomorrow. I'm prolly going to buy a used 21 gallon 125psi 2.5hp I can't find any 30 gallons or more in my price range. I'm sort of on a tight budget. Then I'll buy tools that work well with the compressor
Pressure has little to do with properly driving tools it is the cfm that makes the difference. Yes, they are close cousins but if you don't have the volume the pressure isn't going to do squat. Also, the compressor in your corner is a tinker toy, 2 hoses would deplete this thing in seconds.
cfm delivers the psi, if you don't have the cfm, pressure drops. an air tank can provide more cfm than the pump is actually rated for, but you need the pump to be able to build the psi up. for intermittent use you can have less cfm on the pump than the tool needs
CFM is KING when selecting a compressor. Without lots of CFM, your work will require LOTS of time waiting for the compressor to build back up.
josephgaviota how do u know dat
@@devinwilliams3489 cfm deivers the psi.???
@@deepakthestunner try for yourself. Use 1/4" hose and switch to 3/8"
I dont understand about how does psi or cfm or scfm related to the rpm or touque ability (for example to disassemble a car's engine requires 155 Nm of torque). So would 5.2cfm at 40 psi with 2 horse power could supply 155Nm of torque?
For air tools like and impact wrench you need two things: 1. high PSI 150+ 2. flow that means at least 3/8" ID air hose that is not longer than 30 feet. Use 50' hose? then plan to crank the psi to 175psi. OR use the Earthquake series from harbor freight - tools designed to operate at full torque below 150psi. Don't worry about cfm for impact wrench - the air in the tank is plenty when full.
Will my 20 gallon Campbell hausfeld compressor turn off automatically when it’s filled?
I Don’t Know.. can you try and let it run for awhile? I wanna see what happens.
Better late then never! 🤣
To run a air sander without having to wait for the compressor you would need a 1000 cfm compressor, as in 99% of the cases the cfm is referred to the air intake not outlet, and the inlet is at atmospheric pressure, the outlet is 7-10 bar
What. Atmospheric pressure is 14.7 so all air compressors that don't have a cfm rating above 14.7 what's up with them
Who makes the oversized id fittings he's talking about?

Hi, I have a 50 litre 3 hp air compressor, I need to replace the thermal cut out switch, the old switch has 13 amp stamped on it, but I can't find a replacement of the same rating, my mains run at 240 , what amp should the new switch be, thank you.
Hi David, Be sure your thermal cut off switch is replaceable. One reason you may not be able to find a replacement is the switch is hardwired into the motor and is not replaceable. Call your air compressor company's customer service line or consult the owner's manual for additional information, Sorry for the inconvenience!
adding a filter on a hose to the inlet pipe to the compressor filter like the cone ones kids use on their import car, It really quietens the noise.
wont affect the engine exerting more power?
Ok, this will be my first air compressor. It's basically for an electric stapler for the baseboard and trim throughout the house, using 1" long Staples. I'd like to not go over $150.
