Auto Union Grand Prix racing car Type C, 1936 V16 Start up and Revs
I have seen lots of exclusive cars at Spa Francorchamps... But this must be one of the most rare cars I have ever seen in action at Spa.
The Type C represented the pinnacle in the development of racing car that had been designed by Ferdinand Porsche and which ran its first race in 1934 according to the 750 kg formula (max. mass, dry, without wheels and tyres). The key design feature was the 16-cylinder engine positioned directly behind the driver (mid-mounted engine). It was the most successful German racing car, winning three of the five Grand Prix races, half of the circuit races and all the hill-climbs that Auto Union entered.
Engine: 16-cylinder in V arrangement, with Roots supercharger
Displacement: 6,005 cc
Power: 520 hp at 5,000 rpm
Maximum speed: 340 km/h
Series: 1936-937

This is a replica car. But what a look and what a SOUND!
This a Type A, I believe. Type C had rear torsion bar suspension, stack exhausts, and a one piece removable engine cover. The offset fuel filler neck was only in Type A's as far as I know, also.
Money can not buy skills. Cheers
Id be terrified of driving it because the implications of crashing it. Its a museum piece.
That car is crying out for Bernd Rosemeyer to open up the taps and show us what this monster can really do.
It's 80 years old!!
@@1946nimrod - Probably the only man on the planet to master this beast! Call him the Jimmy Doolittle of Formula 1! Also see the Gee Bee racer... 7 11
There are more people who at least know how to slip a clutch better for a long first gear. The fat millionaire in the car is probably a fan but doesn't contribute in any way to it.
@bullsballs You have evidence for that? It looks pretty original to me!
Agree, it's a race car not a family runabout, needs to be taken by the scruff of the neck and really driven hard, trouble is this guy hasn't got the bollocks to do it, probably few people alive do.
She is really beautiful. Warm congratulations for having restored it and especially for making it run! Well done! Well done! Well done! Encouragement and Thanks!
Its replica most likely
Some of the most wickedly awesome race cars ever built were from this era.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the drivers weren’t scared of it and drove it like it was meant to be driven
I mean this car is probably to effing expensive to do that but yeah
They're not scared of the car, they're scared of breaking it because it's one of a kind. Load up your sim and drive a "decent approximation" of this car in it, and go balls out at Spa and see if you'd crash it or not. And keep in mind, you can reset and go back if you do, so your first touch of the wall while practicing means you failed. While this guy is going to crash something that is priceless. If you're into people racing very expensive old cars without caring if they crash, Goodwood is for you.
Because no one wants to crash a $10 Million dollar car.
U try driving that thing
Yes, and wouldn't it be great if that guy knew how to drive a stick shift!
One of the greatest cars of all times, the absolute kings in the 1930’s. Unequalled in performance until the 80’s. An amazing achievement in only one year starting from scratch.
But let’s not forget, it happened with the full backing of and blank check govt purse to pursue this venture. But yes, the devoured everything else in sight.
No one has achieved what the national socialist did in that short period of time, they brought the world into the 20nth century. The inventor of the modern programmable computer is Konrad Zuse a National Socialist.
Unequalled in performance until the 80s? Fangio was about 30 seconds faster than the fastest of the pre-war German cars in 1957.
@@Shawn-fy2hrWe get it, you love Nazis.
Love this auto union have yet too see one close up amazing engineering for 1930s
My favorite Grand Prix car of all time! Wow!
To all you "keyboard racers" out there, try, for once, to put yourself in the place of the person who is attempting to drive this beast! He's trying to get this marvelous racing car up to speed, without roasting the clutch, over-revving the engine (blowing it up) or screwing up in any number of other ways. "Replica" or not, this vehicle must represent a massive investment! A huge responsibility on the driver's part, one which I doubt many of the "keyboard racers" out there would be willing to accept! I enjoyed just hearing this wonderful engine singing a song of power!
So you think constantly stalling, starting, and labouring an engine is good for it? The guy is driving it like a knob.
David your spot on the keyboard idiots who imagine they can do better would probably ruin the clutch and wreck the engine. These type of idiots you see regularly on our roads thinking they can speed along oblivious to other road users.Fangio and Stirling moss used to gently coax their cars not thrash them unnecessarily, and look what they achieved. Well said in your comments nothing annoys me more than abuse of a mechanical peice of engineering, be it even a hoover washing machine 🙂 or anything made with care. Fantastic sound I think the D version was probably even nicer sounding. Good German engineering. From our side of the hill England 🇬🇧 its got to be the 16 cylinder BRM or a Vanwall .
The great Tazio Nuvolari drove for Auto Union (C and D versions) for 3 years, winning the Grand Prix each year from '37 to '39 after decades of driving for Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Bugatti. The 'C' version was a 16 cylinder, the 'D' a 12 cylinder.
That's an amazing sound. So much mechanical action.
Beautiful car! Wow!
Great gold piece of history!!!
Really pro on the wheel.....
Race drivers in those days had to have guts and courage. A rollover often meant certain death.
Constructors: We have built the most amazing machine to destroy the track. Management: We shall fill it with people who know nothing about to driving.
One mistake and you're history...But an amazing car, indeed
The sound an the emotions from the Alfas is so much better !!! The Engine runs better and the red colors looks greater!
Yeah but they just break down all the time 😂😂😂
The 30’s had three GP cars that dominated . . Alfa Romeo, Auto Unionen and Mercedes Benz . . As for the best drivers, they were all Giants and Fearless the way they drove those cars.
that's a really badass car!
A thing of beauty 👌
V16.. What a MONSTER Classic
I like the 20 year old Auto Union expert. You can tell, he knows that car inside out.
Al Gentry seasoned vintage racers all around! 😂
Niet normaal dit, waanzinnig! Staat in mijn favorieten lijst, thanks!
I think the experts today have all no idea how to manage a race car like this
I do love that they convinced Audi to commission a complete and correct replica.
Época de gloria, máquinas y grandes pilotos.😕♥️
Only a handful of men ever mastered the Auto Union. Presumably the guy trying to drive it here is a pretty experienced driver, or he wouldn’t be in the thing.
These things were gorgeous!
Reading the comments is more fun than watching the video.
Does it have less gears than other race cars, or is it hard to get into gear..seems to stall wen clutch is released. But it sounds amazing i must say
That car sounds fucking amazing. Germans sure were great with their cars.
German engineering at its best...sobering to think that in only just over a decade this car will be 100 years old !
What a machine, I'd love to drive that!
You'd probably drive it better than the tosser they had.
Unreal technology for the time
@@noidontthinksolol Yes it was. Engine in the back for a better weight ratio 1960 Revving way way higher, for that time.
😯😲💪👏👌¡¡ fantastic !! Que pifiada de cambios 😂😂
Era un mostro ma il suono della Bimotore era un'altra storia per non parlare della linea...
V16 sounds awesome .. .must have been terrifying to the competition way back in 1936!! It's so crazy to think that Auto Union developed this mid engine layout almost 80 years ago... which is used in ALL modern road course race cars today.
Stunning sound. Engine is begging to get from under the reigns and be set free.....🍻
This is a recreation Auto Union, but still excellent!
Makes me want to hit the gas listening to that thing warm up . What happened to popping clutch to start it after it died?
Waow very nice car sir 👍😎🌈
That's a very TALL first gear. Apparently the engine looks like it was built by a watchmaker when you do a teardown.
What are they priming it with in the rear?
Damn. Nice
Should start off with a massive wheel spin with smoke pouring off the tyres
Gearing is too high for demo purposes. Drivers scared of ruining the clutch.
@@subrogation747it happens on the grid so..
painful to watch...
i agree completely....
So true, a Volkswagen beetle would do better than how that's been driven
Very!
Hammer geile Klänge 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤👍👍👍👍👍👍
Millionaires with no concept of how to drive!
Hold my BEER! Regards from Germany.
I wonder if you have any idea how difficult this car was to tame, much less master. Further to that, I doubt anyone here has any better idea of how to do it.
How amazing to hear it run again. The stuff of legends. What were they pulling in the 1920's out of these? 240 mph, 250 mph? Remember it was shocking. Well over 220 mph. Sounds like an old WWII aircraft in the woods...
Not in this body trim they didn't. They maxed out at 180mph The ones that went faster had a streamlined body tailored for land speed records and different gearing
@@stijnvandamme76 You are correct. It's been a few decades since I read on the mighty Auto Unions and their unreal top speed records and I had forgotten they made some 'slow' ones.... Some were V-12's (slower) and some were the supercharged V-16's or were they all supercharged? I always thought how cool it'd be to build a mid engine single seater with a old V-12 just to capture the unusual look and non V8 sound of these unassuming monsters.
mid to later 1930s J.C.
Great machine, great sound, just needs a good driver ;)

Holly crap. Such negative comments. This is a pricelsss car which doesn’t have any extra driving aids of modern day. Brake clutch gas peddle and steering wheel. Bout covers it. Except for the seat cover - just kidding there wasn’t one when I sat I. It. A low gear which goes to 70+ and did I mention is priceless. Don’t break it. Don’t hurt it. Just drive it and enjoy it while not hurting it or ur self. Try going 120 when ur backside is 3 inches for the ground, your hands r knumb after 3 minutes and the tires pull left or right depending on the speed. Thank u bias ply. Wish the vid had more motor and suspension but u gets what u gets. If the negatives knew the history of the car maybe there would be - never mind they r idiots.....thanx for the vid. Where is she now?
the strongest German racing car in the world - of its time. He had 382 KW ( 520 PS ) and reached a maximum speed of 220 Mph ( 350 Km/h) . Today Formula 1 racing cars are also not much faster ;)
Auto Union streamliner did 267 mph 😁
The most beautiful race car ever produced. If i were very wealthy i would buy one and have engineers retro fit disc brakes and wide modern tires.
I thought for a second, because of the helmet colouring it was Piquet we were looking at. I quickly realised it was his poorer cousin, gis.a.quid. Winner of 3 embarrassing moments champion. Another highlight for this poor guy.
The late 20's to the late 30's best race cars ever in design and sounds, not to mention best drivers of all, real men not keyboard drivers.
That pat on the head was so patronizing haha
Unsere Auto- Union: Das wars dann wohl für die Konkurrenz!
Is that Auto Union Starter a real unit?? Or is it just a sticker on a modern unit? Would be cool if it was restored for this car!!!
There was only one man that could tame this beast, Tazio Nuvolari the best driver ever lived.
No there was only one driver that performed best in this car, Bernd Rosemeyer he earned the 1936 the European Grand Prix Championship with this monster of 6005 cc volume or so and over 500 hp. Nuvolari was successor after Rosemeyer's death in February 1938, from this year on Motorsports regulation limited the engines to 3 litre volume. This was the type D V12 rear motor car and it took Nuvolari more then half a year until he became accustomed to the back motor concept, so he won 1938 in Donington and 1939 in the last GP before WW2 in Belgrad. kzhead.info/sun/kqqvZqqti3SPd4E/bejne.html Auto Union Type D can be seen in this old video from 1909 when Zwickau celebrated 100 years of Audi!
Rosermayer's last words "I'm not a child, I know what has to be done."
@@bennyhannover9361 Nuvolari had driven Auto Unions as far back as 1934! Tested one of these at Masaryk GP in 1934, and it is said that his times were pretty fast considering how new the car was for him. He was also great friend with Bernd Rosemeyer, and as a bit of a trivia, he managed to get Bernd to test an Alfa Romeo 12C-36 at Monza in 1936...
Una joyita...!!
this is why i love KZhead
3:45 Man! That first gear is TALL!
Thats because its not 1st gear, its 2nd,in 1st this cars just lays down rubber
Just think. They raced those monsters flat out in leather helmets!!! Like the guy @2.54
German Top Fuel Dragster🔥🔥🔥
Did they have the camber compensator idea yet? Or did the leaf springs give somewhat the same effect? Side to side... J.C.
Was it totally original--or is it a machine shop modern replica.I do not care sounds great. But I would not think starting an engine that old would be safe--if it was totally original.
If you stick that booster in my xxx I gonna roar the same way!
Oh to see and hear someone who knows what they are doing take this up to say 80 percent of its limit👍👍
This guy should have started going forward in First Gear not 4th!
Spa....not far away from my hometown.....
Nick Jason's Auto Union type c car ..the drummer of Pink Floyd fame ..a very talented driver and a petrolheads with great taste in vehicles..I imagine a type c in any ones hands would be a nightmare as they did not come alive until around nearly 3k rpm and steering was questionable ..but lucky bastard getting to drive that
You mean Nick Mason??
yes sorry Nick Mason..auto correct crap stuffs the comment again
I too was disappointed in the operation but, to give the driver the benefit of doubt, some tracks will have noise restrictions except on certain days. Possibly they weren't able to really 'let 'er howl'. No doubt that thing makes quite a din at full song...
Better than music feelings
original porsche boxster where is the front?
Just two questions: Where can I find this driving school? And what did the car do to deserve this?
DaVinci or Michangelo would approve of this beauty...
There comes a point of time in you life you can afford a racing car like this, pity is by then you are well and truly past being able to drive it in any capacity. Fine example of this above!
David it’s his problem! I guess you have vast experience in racing that monster for judging so severely of the problems he had!!! 😂
😎Typical German, brutal and loud. But i Love that😀
I stood next to one as it was started at the 97 Goodwood FoS 😯😯

Who is the driver?
It might have been nice to have seen some of the footage from the three (or more) GoPro cameras onboard...
Make 20 idenitical Type C and let the current F1 drivers drive these instead of their usual mounts at Spa later this year :-) Who would win?
they would all be dead :)
Kirk Douglas. So him win in an early movie. Too early for Steve McQueen.
I wonder why they made the tires so narrow in those days when this was designed? With that amount of power, you would think the tires would be the limiting factor in performance.
If you watch some of the original footage you'll see that AU sometimes doubled up the rear wheels (two per side)
They didnt knew much about grip I think. And the idea was that speed was more important than grip in the corners.
they were all crossply tyres back then, they were pretty much like like big pushbike tyres so couldnt be that wide, it wasnt till radial tyres came along that gp/f1 tyres could get wider
Lovely noise.
Nelson Piquet helmet?
As I desire the Formula One season to start I watch this video.
