It reallly is nuanced and I didn't mean it literally as just the pattern of singing with a certain timing. Flowing or riding a beat is, for sure to an old head, a mixture of cadences, literal flow, adlibs (mainly on southern trap songs) and harmonies, completed by traditionally a bridge but more populary a pre-chorus in the modern age, witty and/or catchy hook - it all ties together by finding the pockets in the song and and flowing with a certain cadence to hit some pockets 99% of rappers would not have thought of, stressing the end of a cadence to reach a pocket in the deep that would seem impossible but he makes shit look easy. Future, Thug and Gunna (Lil Baby if he gets his head straight) are kings of manipulating pockets and making their voices not overlap with the beat, all the time... (DaBaby) and most of all, not sticking to a strict formula. Travis Scott still has amazing beat selection but his flow/cadence is formulaic, he knows what pays the bills. Gunna out here making real art and the best he can.
