Stock Subaru shames everyone at test hill

All stock early nineties Subaru shames off-roaders as it tools over Test hill at Silver Lake. He did this more than once without getting stuck. A lot of jaws dropped when he went over the top in the same ruts left by a dually diesel that failed in it's attempt just minutes before.

    • Top advice , don’t wait around and save up tens of thousands for a new 4wd just to get out and see your country Grab five grand , get something reliable around 20 years old put some 33” on it and see how far it takes you Learn to drive and fix something that’s already had a few missions in the scrub before wasting money on something you can’t drive worth a piss anyway And never be scared to dent and scratch it to the shit , adds character Save money on the rig so you can buy more beer and tucker 👍

I highly doubt you're going to be making it through sandhollow's triple sevens trail on a stock Jeep Wrangler, but I also highly doubt anyone without a lot of off-roading skill regardless of vehicle (maybe a Ukrainian atlas as an exception) is getting through there without scratching their vehicle

That thing could just about climb trees. I could see it being able to get up that hill. The boxer engines in those old Subarus burned oil like crazy, and I had to replace the seals twice. I drove it over 200K miles, then sold it, still going strong. Other than going through so much oil, it was an awesome car.

The others have a few reliability bugaboos. Not like US brands though but still. My 2020 Subie is the first car I've had that can refuse to unlock if it's below about -5°F (guess I'm not going to work that day?), and whose infotainment occasionally doesn't start with the car (requiring a restart), and whose fuel door often freezes shut. Ergh. Still love my STI which was of course made in Japan.

I had walked up there once when it was dry to make a call. Other folks on my crew with the jacked up large tires, stacks etc could not climb the stockpile. I dropped into low in my 2010 Subaru Forester and drove right up. No drama. None of the 4wd pickups could make it.

The high 4wds on an incline have more of that back flip factor starting to come into play on the steep sections hence less gravitational down force on the wheels perpendicular to the slope, hence wheel spin no go forward lol.

It is so funny how stock it is compared to all the other modified rock crawlers around there. Don't get me wrong, real rock crawlers do incredible stuff I thought not possible for any vehicle to do. I am not a good driver, but I know this, so I pay extra attention, and I feel like if I was driving it on a mountain, I would be very uncomfortable going downhill at 5500 pounds/2500 kilos when it's slippy on flat gravel at 35 mph/~55 kpm My brain hurts. I'm trying to mentally lock in metric conversions and translate it into an innate understanding, but I haven't done speed in a *wheel* ... I'll see myself out.

  • Back in 2005 we took the journey of the Old Telegraph Track to Cape York upon us. We met a lovely 4WD club at the beginning of the track and we joined them for the trip. The leader was in a very slightly modified iveco van (which he called Ivan) and the rest of us in hiluxes, landcruisers and range / land rovers. And a pretty much stock subaru (ever so slightly increased ride height but that was pretty much it. Dude made it just fine without any help from the "actual" off road cars.... (so did the iveco btw)

  • From my experience, it is always the biggest bushman, that have the smallest car... I knew a forester that used old skoda, which wasn't even meant off-road... One snowy day, I went with him up the mountains. Where all other cars, including some heavy dute pick-ups, failed, his skoda was still going... It was amazing to see the disbelieve in the eyes of drivers as we were surpassing their helplessly stuck trucks mid blizzard in a 1989 skoda 😂

  • I had a bone stock 1973 Datsun 240Z . At the engine shop I was working at happened to be a guy that was an expert on them so I asked him what mods I could do to make it faster and he said "Nothing" . That everything was already balanced out so well that as soon as you change one part it throws the rest off. Even the iron exhaust . Though he did show me a few common burrs inside the carb that I could file down in about 15 min so I did. My buddy bought one too, same year and dumped a ton of money into it . We finally had a showdown in this huge open lot and I smoked him every time. All he had done was make his louder and shinier .
