Not gonna lie, Valve’s always been really ahead of their time. The first portal had *really* good graphics for a 2007 game, as did the sequel.
Well their first source game halflife2 was also ahead of its time for 2004 kinda
I think the monochrome and the not aiming high for the graphics helps a lot, it makes a more creepy, low budget type atmosphere and it keeps the game from becoming dated

That's pretty much what happened to me back in the 2016.
6 years before this game I was still playing ms-dos caveman and public internet network-that was actually usable at all-was just being introduced where I live. I remember seeing screenshots of Half Life 1 alpha release(yes, with that campy looking Barney wearing MP helmet) on a magazine and less than a decade later we had literally photorealistic ingame environment(HL2) and top notch gameplay like portal. 'World-changing' would be a proper way to put it.

I find it quite interesting that the music at 0:28 is actually the guitars from “Vortal Combat” from Half-Life 2: Episode Two, but with the percussion and bass from “Guard Down” from Half-Life 2: Episode One. Both games were released alongside Portal, Half-Life 2, and Team Fortress 2 on The Orange Box, and Kelly Bailey was the composer for Half-Life, Half-Life 2 and the episodes as well as being one of two composers for Portal (the other was Mike Morasky, who also scored Portal 2, Team Fortress 2, and Half-Life: Alyx). Just a neat little piece of trivia.

yep! at this point in development they were still using a lot of slightly modified half life 2 assets (like the sounds for the turrets). Thats just one of the default civilian models with a jumpsuit painted on

@@bartsimpson532 (i know it's a 1 year old comment shh) Honestly i think that just makes the entire story kinda hilarous. while the resistance is fighting against the combine with all they have to take their planet back, down there, somewhere, a deadly ai is making a woman go through useless tests with a PORTAL GUN, when one of the biggest issues of the combine and the resistance was that they couldn't _teleport_ i imagine life would be much easier for them if the resistance had portal guns they could use, but no. cave johnson just chose not to tell anyone that he had portal guns. he decided to just make test subjects solve puzzles with them until he went bankrupt. i just find that very tragicomic lmao

I've heard of Portal and it's genius ever since I was a kid, but only about two weeks ago was I able to buy Portal and Portal 2 for myself during Steam Sale. Honestly? It's held up even after all these years. I absolutely adore the level design and the writing. It's been 12 years and I'm surprised at how it's pretty timeless.
add a fact, than during 2006-2007 - there was almost NO mainstream games with a silly tech-architech-cool designs, and no cool mechanics to play with. And almost nobody liked puzzle games.

+HunChem KZhead re-processes old videos as they introduce higher playback resolutions and framerates. It's also why some of the old videos have 60FPS playback available.

Now, I don't know if this applies to ALL videos but as I said: you can find videos that were uploaded in 2010 and they're available to watch in 60 FPS. And also you can find really old videos from 2006 that are available to watch in HD just as this one right here.

The Cereal Guy If you're searching for a legit answer: Back then you could UPLOAD videos in HD, but they couldn't be played in HD. KZhead still saved the original file somewhere on their servers though. So when they made HD videos a thing, all they did was reuploading the original files, essentially updating the old videos to HD. They did the same with the 60fps update. You could upload videos in 60fps, but they couldn't be played in 60fps until the update came out.
