  • With this small sample size of the screenplay, its just okay. This is really an example of how creative people saw a script (like Joaquin) and envisioned something more out of it than what is initially printed on page.

    • On the other hand, maybe the screenwriter (who is also the director) is one of these "creative people" and you're just some idiot.

  • Joker as a ptsd soldier made way more sense as a character arc. Like Kurtz if he returned home after his platoon being ambushed and he survived a near beheading in the process and got no help upon return and THEN turned into a bigger monster

  • Wow, it's like they looked at the screenplay and decided to just do their own thing. If I was a screenwriter, I'd be pissed that either they didn't think of it like for this movie or upset they didn't stick to it like in a bad movie.

  • Wish they kept the music and tone eerie & uncomfortable instead of a triumphant feeling but I understand why the director wanted it this way.

    • Forgive me, but I think you're missing the point of the piece of music. The track is 'Rock and Roll' by Gary Glitter - who was a UK pop star in the 70s and ended up a convicted paedophile, doing time for his abuses. HIs music has been kinda been taboo ever since. This scene sent shivers down my spine when I saw it for the first time...

  • This is one of those rare perfect films. One which has a cohesive aesthetic that makes it impossible to tease apart the writing from the acting from the photography, the score...As if it sprang forth fully formed like Venus from the shell. It's an important film. The heartbreaking story of a good, gentle, but broken man's descent into violent madness. It drives home the importance of always being kind to everyone because we create our monsters. Let's create saints instead. Phoenix's performance absolutely wrecked me. I cried nearly the whole time, from a slow leak to outright sobbing. Incredible work by all.

  • When the trailer for Joker came out, I thought it looked fantastic. I was excited. But when I finally saw it I found this movie totally juvenile, misguided and bad. I don't even think Phoenix is particularly good in it, and I usually think he's amazing. It's a bland pastiche of better movies (King of Comedy, Taxi Driver) and I get the feeling Todd Phillips never actually understood the core of those films or why they're good, he just took some broad ideas, tossed them in a blender and assumed it would turn out good. It didn't. There's zero thematic resonance. The scene where Joker goes on DeNiro's show is painfully bad and predictable, it's like "he's gonna kill him now right? right." Not remotely shocking. Also the scene where he confronts Bruce Wayne, blech. Just unconvincing tripe.
