  • Society expects mothers to raise kids like they don't have jobs and to work a job like they don't have kids. I'm not complaining because I love my kids and I enjoy my job, but surely we can all recognize this dichotomy is not sustainable.

    • @The Logic Party Ummm I’m a teacher. We get 10 sick days but only 2.5 days allotted for a sub so even if I have the additional 7.5 days allowed I am penalized when I need a sub or my team has to cover my classes. I literally had to teach on maternity leave, which I had accrued because maternity isn’t given but rather I saved up my leave time to be out for sustaining the population, I called in each day to instruct my students while the teacher with an adjoining class kept her door open to monitor my students. Majority of teachers are women. Licensed and degreed professionals that are the backbone of society and I can’t do what I have earned the right to do. My husband has a salary that allowed me the option to just quit but there were no other teachers lined up with the ability to teach chemistry.

What is wrong with your brain? Apparently “logic” in your name is a case of irony. We DO NOT have flexible time off and my insurance is dwarfed by those in the private sectors and corporate America. You clearly have NEVER worked in a public school in the US, the industry that had over 300,000 empty teaching positions BEFORE the pandemic due to the mistreatment of those in my profession. It is YOUR false narrative that fooled the insurrectionists. People not listening to those who are telling their own true experiences and people brushing it off and blaming it on others. I dare not argue any further with someone who is clearly a troll but you WILL NOT misconstrue my own life.

  • My company announced last month that they wanted people to start being more professional in their home environments...better workspaces, dressing for your day, no kids and pets in the background. It was immediately called out for being very tone-deaf, and they had to back-peddle and say that they'd make exceptions for kids because it's not a controllable situation. A lot of my co-workers have young kids at home, and we've all learned to deal with occasional interruptions, but it hasn't made anyone's productivity go down. The lack of understanding from the upper levels of management show how far removed they are from what other people are working thru.

It's so inappropriate to demand exactly the same output as before given the problems especially families are facing right now. It's baffling how we can all still be so fixated on productivity. So glad to hear that they were called out and peddled back. Good luck to you and your co-workers!

    • Maybe that's b/c the US Gov has an endless tide of immigrants. Nothing wrong with some immigration...just saying. Other countries don't do what the US does. I believe this is the reason they can get away with treating US citizens like crap and not like citizens of a nation. Endless supply of a workforce and low minimum wage essentially is "slave wages."

      @jaelynn7575@jaelynn75753 жыл бұрын
    • @@jaelynn7575 Yeah, it's definitely not the billions we spend on the military (like that $2 trillion, 18 year war in Afghanistan) or the tax breaks for the wealthy. It's the migrants who have taxes deducted from their paychecks but can't file their tax returns because they don't have social security numbers. Definitely not the government bailing out Wall Street repeatedly and private equity firms like Blackstone buying up real estate on the cheap after the subprime mortgage lending bubble popped in 2009, driving up housing costs to a point that the UN accused them of causing a global housing crisis with people experiencing stagnating wages and soaring housing costs. Definitely has *nothing* to do with the fact that we pay more than any country for healthcare per-capita but have some of the highest maternal mortality rates of any developed nation and insane medical debt. Or that we have 20% of the world's entire prison population, despite having only 5% of the world's population and all those people in prison aren't able to earn at least minimum wage to pay taxes and contribute to society. I mean, look at all those illegal immigrants contributing to super PACs and buying off congressmen to pass laws that favor them! It's definitely not the ultrawealthy lobbying congress for bigger tax breaks or policies that favor them maintaining their wealth! Billionaires just work millions of times harder than your average Joe! Definitely not the ultrawealthy or people like Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell who offshore wealth in the Cayman Islands. You can *definitely* pin all those problems conveniently upon the scapegoat of illegal immigrants. Makes perfect sense -__-

He didn’t need to have a college degree to make a living wage. And if he did go to college, he could afford it using money he earned at his part time job. Back then, if you were a working female, it was because you either didn’t have a husband, had a husband who failed at life, or even worse, were an unwed mother. Either way, it was definitely frowned upon, because why else would you need that money? You either lived with your parents, or your husband. It’s great that we live in a modern society where women are free to work any job without a depressing backstory. But when people talk about how great the good old days were, they seem to forget the reason they were able to live like that.

  • I feel validated now. I’ve been working from home since my son was an infant and a single parent since my son was 7. He’s now 19. It was ridiculously hard to keep it going while homeschooling my son with virtually no childcare. I am an Art Therapist and also ran my own art gallery for awhile when he was little. I dragged him along to meetings with his Legos, and spent years working late at night getting little sleep. I also lost a ton of money stepping away from consulting and public speaking after he was born. It’s hard to step out of your career when you have young children and then step back in. It’s tough to ever make up that lost ground.

  • I've worked in male-dominated jobs my entire life. It is a FACT that the reason women earn less and get promoted less often than men is because, when a kid gets sick or there is a meeting with a teacher, etc., it is typically the mother who has to leave work to deal with it. When a woman goes out on maternity leave, it is her coworkers who have to pick up the slack. This is an unspoken prejudice that has existed from the dawn of employment and probably always will.

Male co-workers with more flexibility and availability were given special tasks and privileges that should have gone to me first as the department head. There is no winning at this in any profession. Fun fact: In ancient Persia mothers were given extra rations for each child they had in addition to equal pay for the jobs they worked. Not all civilizations have failed women, just the majority of them.

They then share ideally a minimum level of skills (language, social abilities, tying shoes, use of scissors and pens) It helps to equalize the chances for children from different economic and social backgrounds and avoids ostracising them before they even had a chance to develop an interest in education.

I was making just a few cents above minimum wage, and receiving a major discount on my own two children attending (which was a big reason for why I was working there in the first place). The government absolutely should be stepping up not only for the parents benefit, but for the children, and the teachers. Children are sponges at that age and if the government would step up parents would be able to give them a better quality of life at home, daycares would be more able to keep dedicated experienced teachers who could provide better quality care and education to children. If other countries are doing it we can do it too.

  • This is disgraceful. I've raised my children and was enjoying having my days to myself again. Enter my beloved grandson. My daughter works a full-time job to support herself and my grandson, but was falling behind in all her financial obligations, due to child care costs. I finally told her, stop the madness, withdraw him from daycare, so I now take care of him 5 days a week. I gladly do this, but not everyone has family or friends to pickup the slack. This is social issue, that needs to be addressed.

  • I worked in school-age child care for six years, and it was a job I truly loved. I didn't want to leave it, even after completing my Masters degree (in mental health counseling, where I focused mostly on adolescents), but at the end of 6 years and with two relevant degrees I wasn't even making $8/hour because I was part-time during the school year. My partially United Way funded employer didn't see any value in my skills or education so I left in September of 2010. I sat in my car out front and just cried for like a half hour or more the last time I walked out that door. Those kids, even the ones I don't always recognize 10 years later when they still recognize me, they made every day at work a good one. My point is, part of America's child care problem isn't just the lack of free and low cost programs from the government, it's also a lack of investment in quality workers. Especially in facilities that are designated acceptable for Foster kids to attend (ours was) because often that does require a certain skill set that your average college freshman (the typical worker) won't have. Then there's the autism explosion in this country: (and the numbers do seem higher in this country) those kids go to day care too, and it takes some training, or at least some ability to THINK in a less black and white way, to work with them too, but my former organization didn't seem to understand that back then, or not enough to pay anyone with education hours or degrees more. This country very much needs to invest in childcare, including its childcare workers, (who are more than glorified baby sitters).

For example, situation, education, future earnings, current earnings (if in debt), choice of being a SAH partner and many more. Being said all that should you be treated like a slave for staying at home, NO ! But it doesn’t mean a man who works as a fireman jumping into fires all day comes home to a person who tells him or her that staying at home is the same thing or if you’re a nurse working a 12 hours shift during a pandemic coming home to a person who suggests that their job is the same or harder, it isn’t. My mum managed to ensure her own retirement income was pretty good, but even then, when my late father died (and his pension stopped coming in), my mum had to take a careful look at her finances, to ensure that she was able to live without my dad's much higher pension. I think this made my sister and I particularly cognisant of the fact that we may well be in a position where we outlive our higher earning husbands.

  • As a 20 year veteran in the childcare industry, I’m glad this topic is being recognized and hopefully addressed. Childcare is out there but subsides want to pay us less then $5 an hour. Childcare vouchers pay so little it’s hard to afford quality staff, and good resources to care for the children so the providers cut there own pay. Raising the childcare market rate on subsides to a realistic and life able wage can help so much. $40 for caring for a child for 8-12 hours a day is not enough to cover the many expenses we have. Payroll, food, rent, utilities, etc.. I’m hoping we will see some real change soon. 💕

Most Early Childhood Education (ECE) professionals in the United States make minimum wage, with no leave time and no insurance or retirement. Many are extremely well educated and most are very dedicated professionals who serve young children and their families because it's their calling, knowing they'll never make a decent income in this field. And now these ECE professionals are on the front lines of the COVID-19 virus. This whole system needs to change! For the sake of our children, the US economy and our future.

Back then people in the US complained about taxes going up if we adopted such 'socialists programs' but I took all my taxes and insurance premiums plus child care and guess what, I was paying 63%. They only pay 51% in most of Europe. After my kids were out of daycare I still was paying 49%. I remember feeling betrayed by this country. I bought into the high school version of the whole US is the greatest country in the world thing. Not anymore, it's not even close. Now that I am looking towards retirement, chances are I won't be able to live well in the US so I am looking and making plans to join the throngs of retirees out of the US to expat. Tchau!!!

    • eeh, sortof. Depends on wether you see future tax payers as someone to exploit, or someone to invest in. I took a quick look at some numbers that I could quickly find, and I estimate that on average by the time a child hits 18, the Norwegian government has invested 2mNOK (~230kUSD) in that child. That number isn't taken out of thin air, but I'd wager it has a 20-30% margin of error. And our government will continue to invest in that person for their lifetime, but by around the ages of 25-30 (depending on education), that investment tends to bring a return. To make sure that the investment is returned with a profit (on average), healthcare and other services are made easily and affordably available so productive time isn't uneccesarily reduced. Workplace security, food security and other potential dangers to people productivity is important for the same reason. The same goes for getting and keeping the female ~50 of our population into the workforce. :) PS: If someone more qualified can provide more accurate numbers, please do. :)
