Don't forget that for local trains or non high speed trains, you will need to "convalidare" your paper ticket in the little yellow or green machine before boarding the train.
great advice. I did say that, didn't I?
Haha I was going to say that too. We were in Italy for a family emergency so all this figuring out stuff was on the fly
recently is not longer mandatory because the tiket is valid only for that specific train so if u forget it is not a big deal... but anyway do it, you never know
Actually, it depends. You can ask at the ticket office for an "open ticket" you can validate any platform, and lets you ride any train as long as it stops at the chosen destination. Otherwise, you can choose for a specific reason, which ticket doesn't have to be validated.
@@materiagrezza9331 I didn't know that. So, if you buy a ticket for a specific destination and time, no validation is necessary? grazie
As an Italian living in Rome and using pretty often high speed trains, I can tell you this review is 100% accurate. Well done
Thank you very much!
Do you miss the trains when your in other countries??
I went to Venice/Rome by train and enjoyed it very much by Italo ...😊
An addition I'd like to make when it comes to checking your platform: Big train stations will have platforms numbered for example 1 to 15, BUT in addition they can have platforms 1 OVEST, 2 OVEST etc. or 1 EST, 2 EST etc., which means 1 WEST or 1 EAST and these are completely separate platforms to platform 1. This is something I personally fell for once, but never again :)
Live and learn, and thanks for sharing that advice!
Another addìtion: at some stations you can find "binario tronco": for example 1 T, 2 T, but it isn't very frequent.
@@valeriavisconti1281 Yes, for example the Mantova station has binario 1T, for the connection between Mantova and Verona.
And then you might also have SOTTERRANEO (underground)
Screams in Bologna Centrale
so helpful, thanks!!
Glad it was helpful!
Great thorough video!! I'm going for the first time in two months and I'm probably 4 times as wide as you, and you walking it thru step by step makes me more confident I can do it without getting on the wrong train
Straight to the point and no B.S..... thanks for the great advice.
as an Italian, I immediately understood that station Of the introduction was Santa Maria Novella in Florence... I hope you are happy that you visited our homeland and we all will be❤️🇮🇹...
yeah, it's an iconic station ;)
It sure was been to that station a number of times on our trip to your homeland and my grand parents back in 2018. What a bellissimo country you live in, can't wait to return hopefully this year, arividerchi.
PRO tip on Regional/REG Trains (local trains, the slow ones) you can buy the tiket on the train BUT you have to pay 5€ more and it's better if you actively find the tiket inspector inside the train and don't wait for him, otherwise he thinks you are trying to not paying it. it is useful in emergency situations.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and helping the community here.
Another Pro tip on Regional trains: try to avoid them 😅
LOL!!!!
thank youuu 💙
I visited Porta Nuova station in Torino; it was magnificent: organized, clean, and pleasant. There’s nothing similar in Romania, unfortunately. 🚄🇮🇹
glad you enjoyed Torino!
Mostly in the north in Italy things work better .. although there you can get your surprises
Romania is very poor country
Great video, thank you!
Thank you for this really helpful video. I'm not very experienced at public transport in my own country let alone one where English is not the primary language. Your video has made me feel much less anxious about train travel in Italy.

Good advice. Italian trains are awesome.
Agreed!
Better then Metro north run by the Dumbocrats in NY, or Scamtrack no way.
Good man , gregor . Traveling is amazing when possible!
It really is! Every trip is a new adventure waiting to be discovered. 🌍✈️
Thank you for all your info.
My pleasure!
Ciao! I rode my first European train in 1974, traveling from Salzburg where I was studying, to various destinations. It was easy back then and even easier today. In Italy, the trains run from city centers, with stops in between, to city centers. Check the frequency from your departure to your destination online, arrive at least 20 minutes before, go to a vending machine, select your preferred language, buy a ticket, for local travel validate it in a tiny box that stamps the time etc on it, and go to the platform and get on or wait till it arrives. Trains move fast. It may depart in a couple minutes. It will be comfortable safe traveling. Renting a car is silly if staying in Italy unless you cannot walk or plan on staying at a resort not in the city. I have been all over the world, Europe and Italy. Traveling by train and day excursions are comfortable and fun.
Thank you for the great video❤

Rode Italian trains in Sicily and from Rome to Bologna and back. WONDERFUL experience. No issues. Bought the tickets from the person behind the desk, not the machines, as it was my first time.

Trains in italy, are awesome!! So clean and smooth. Going back end of April. Can't wait.
Yes, Italian trains are definitely a class apart-so efficient and enjoyable to ride! 🚄💖 Glad to hear you're excited for your trip. April in Italy sounds like a dream. Safe travels and enjoy every moment!
Well done - just about all the critical info clearly presented in a few minutes. I probably studied Rick Steves for an hour to learn as much, back in 2000, when ticket machines were considered cutting edge tech and nobody had smartphones.
thanks so much!
You can present everything and people would buy it,cause you can,you know how ….such a good quality of your video again, you are a professional👍…greetings from slovakia🇸🇰tom

Zoe and Ramon, thanks so much. thanks for dropping some comment love. ;)
on our way to Italia next month, your train primer was top shelf helpful. grazie Gregor !
GREAT!! Let me know how it goes!
As an italian I can tell you that the high-speed line it’s the better way to move around major cities: it’s fast, way more flexible hours than the plane (there are around 10 journey every day across major cities), no issues with the luggage (no weight, size or unit limits) and you can easily reach the city center of every city. TIP: mind to book them early (at least 20-30 days earlier, the earlier the better) to get bargain prices. If you buy tickets couple days before the price will be significantly higher (from 29€ if booked 20 days earlier to 120€ if booked couple days earlier)
yeah, gets you right into the center of the cities unlike planes
On trains you don’t have assigned seat you need to either validate your paper ticket or if you have your ticket booked on web site you need to log in on the calendar day of your travel, go into your journey and click “check-in”.
Good advices! Funny about the last minute change of platform, it is really true! About the app, it works really well, you can check when the train you are expecting is coming, that way you can stop running in a change.
Thanks for sharing!!
I want to know if these apps provided by the train company tell you when your train is coming so that you don't have to be looking up at a board constantly (and also if they'll alert you to changes in train platforms.)
@@Neville60001 Once you know your train number (from your ticket), you can follow it up from the app, tha app tells you where it is at any moment, what platform it is arriving, the app is very intuitive, you'll find the info quickly.
Thank you for such valuable information. We had taken trains in Italy but wished we had seen your info. As we had to learn by trail and error.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video & spot on with the information. One extra bit though is when travelling from Rome Termini be aware that there are more platforms than the those on the main concourse. We assumed that "platform 2 est" was showing the departure time was 'estimated' as ... but it was actually "platform 2 east". There are more platforms on the east side of the station with the same numbering starting from 1 to 5 (I think). We nearly missed our train departure but for a local who noticed that we looked anxious as our train was due to depart & it was not on platform 2. He then told us about the other platforms. And yes we did catch the train as I can whistle very loudly and the conductor held the train for us as it was moving out, very considerate.
This is why it's always important to give yourself at least 10 extra minutes to sort things out and yeah the Italians are always super helpful if you look like you need help or if you ask around for help but I'm glad that you got to where you needed to go
Great video, as an italian i can say this is a very complete guide
Glad to hear that!
I want to know if you usually use discounts. I saw one recently but I don’t know if it’s reliable.
Nice tips.
Glad you like them!
Thanks for showing Florence's station, a masterpiece of rationalist architecture from the 1930s, designed by Giovanni Michelucci, one of the greatest modern Italian architects.
Yes. I love it!
Italy has Beautiful design
Another great video Gregor. We used the high speed train to go from Naples to Rome and business class was brilliant. We will be using the train next July when we are in Rome to go to Florence for the day so your tips and advice will be really helpful, thanks
ah, happy to hear that. thanks Peter.
Hope you have also seen the rusty older trains that have doors that don't open, trains covered in graffiti, Stations that need a good face-lift - -all in all Europe has prettier, cleaner railways than Italy has
Yeah. Much of Italy needs attention. It's sad at times.
Excellent video! My friend and I are going to Italy this year and we’re nervous about taking the trains. This was very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for planning to come and visit Italy, I hope you will be able to enjoy it!🤗
Yea well learn a little Italian so that you can show the people a some respect. I know as an American our language doesn't matter to the hoards that invade it everyday, but in Italian knowing a few words, and sentences go a long way in the locals in helping you order a meal, find the bathroom get on the right train etc. Enjoy your trip Italy is by far the greatest place my wife and I have ever visited. Oh and if you want some great pastry the pasticceria pastry shop in Italian right behind the station in Florence is beyond great, arrivederci.

Sounds great! Happy to hear
Hello, thank you for sharing an interesting tour, great video, useful and beautiful, friendly like, good luck and have a good week,😍😍🤗🤗😉😉
Thank you too
Appreciated,Very informative and amazing blogs video ,,I really like it the way is exposed the beauty of train , surrounding and in a very simple communication way. Very Good
thanks for saying that, I appreciate your feedback and positivity!
Thanks a lot. ❤
You're welcome 😊
great video
Thanks for the visit
Whilst it is indeed correct to say that in larger cities in Italy there is a main station is often not guaranteed that trains will even serve a main station. For instance in Florence there are some trains that serve either Rifredi or Campo di Marte Stations, whilst in Milan there are other cases of long distance trains bypassing Milan Centrale or terminating at Porta Garibaldi
In Florence the major trains go to SM Novella. Same for Rome. Milan it's 50 50 with centrale and Garibaldi.
I'm taking a spur of the moment trip to Italy because my plans to go to Paris are on hold due to the strikes. I have never been to Italy and this video is so helpful. I feel so much better after watching it. Thank you. Thank you!
THANK YOU for the support. 😎❤️😊 I'm glad this video helped and yeah, you're going to love it.
How was it? Did you like your trip to Italy?
From Paris you can take the FRECCIAROSSA High-Speed train from Paris Gare de Lyon to TORINO or MILANO Central Station (it takes around 5-6 hours). From both TORINO and MILANO you can then take other high speed trains throughout the country
How did your trip go?
Good job!
Thanks!
Spending a couple days in Barcelona and Venice next year after my cruise can't wait!!!
Great. I hope this helps.
I took an Italo train from Naples to Rome Termini earlier this month and was surprised how busy it was on a Monday afternoon. I think all seats were taken, at least in my coach and I noticed how few seats were available throughout the train when I booked. And it was cheap as well, a lot cheaper than expected and what I would pay on the UK rail network.
Yeah. Good prices. UK is expensive!
My husband and I will go to Rome from Naples by high speed train on Monday 17/04. Do you have any suggestion?
@@SultanaRazia-yh1pn GREAT To hear. Just watch this video over and over :)
@@bettinakluge4215 can you book a seat the same day you are leaving? or will they all be taken aleady?
@@nathaly759 I am sure you can book on the day or just go to the station and buy your tickets, however I would prebook to ensure you get a seat. I booked online about 2 weeks prior to travel and there were very few of the cheaper seats left and only a handful of seats in each carriage. I have to say that I paid just over €10 for the single journey. There are regional slow trains, as well as two fast train companies, Italo and Trenitalia and plenty of trains throughout the day.
Just got back from Europe specifically Italy. Thanks to your channel. I was able to survive the train ride...ha ha ha. Would be easier next time I go back there. Roma Termini is soooo busy and huge, but was able to find the platform # easily. Other train stations are easy to navigate! Trenitalia app is easy. I also tried to use the Biglettia machine with ease on some stations too. So, quite an experience for someone who's not familiar with European train system because we usually don't use train in the USA. Your video helped me. I watched it a few times before I embark on my trip. It's a great help and saver!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm thrilled to hear that my video was able to help you on your trip. It means a lot to me that I could make a difference. Safe travels and hope you have more amazing adventures in the future!
Somehow I get quite a lot of visitor coming from this video no wonder it's a superb video. I instantly subscribe to your channel. Thank you so much...
Thank you very much! :)
Oh my gosh! Soooo helpful. Thank you for the app/website to order tix head of time! I'm super excited but anxious about my trip to Italia next month. Flyiing into Rome and going straight to Sorrento from the airport. Thank you Thank you!!
Your excitement for Italy is absolutely understandable - it's a beautiful country with so much to offer. Rome to Sorrento is a fantastic journey. Wishing you a wonderful trip filled with amazing experiences! Grazie and safe travels! 🇮🇹✈️🚆
thank you!@@GregorBrown
Thanks for your video. Visiting Italy in August for the first time :)
Hope you enjoy it!
As a traveller on Italian HSR I always choose Italo. They're simply cheaper, so if you're the type that wanna save money, most of the times Italo's the way to go.
I find they have less options and the low prices are only those odd hours, but definitely worth checking both companies for prices.
@@GregorBrown Eh you gotta chase sales and offers, but Trenitalia has always been a lot more expensive. Then again it depends on how much money you want to spend, I'm a student in my 20s so 4 hours in second class for 30 euros will do great for me, my advice is more for pennyless guys than the type of people that can already afford to travel from other continents here
As an italian I can confirm Italo prices are pretty much always cheaper than frecciarossa's, and their trains are also more comfortable, they have snack machines, etc
Availability is always less than trenItalia but it'd good to have competition
I have found italo unreliable. When they switch carriages reserved seats are a chaotic mess and seating is less generous. I prefer advance purchase doscounted and special offer trenitalia where better class choices can be discounted. And more frequent
Thank you on this video since I'm planning going to Naples :D Ps. It's common thing to serve beverages and coffee in better trains, even in Serbia (at least in train that goes up to 200km/h. And it's cheap ticket is like 4€). If you have time come to Belgrade (you have cheap wizz air flights from 15€, from Rome to Belgrade).
I will travel to Italy on August so this video is very useful.
Glad it was helpful!
Being a local from italy this is normal for me by going to school everyday. But you are like a crash course for italian train stations
I'm glad I just discovered this video, as my wife and I will be taking trains from Rome to Florence to Naples and back to Rome later this year. Train travel has changed a bit since I last rode FS in 1980!
Have fun! thanks for watching!
You said ‘1980’. LOL, 1979 was the last time I took an Italian train. My memories are a ‘slightly’ less pleasant experience than mentioned in the comments. 🚂 😂
@@lesf5792 Unless my memory is not clear, there were wooden bench seats in 2nd class from Rome to Naples!
@@charlesbaran1106 lol. I took the train to Brindisi. It was God AWEFUL 🤪
I'm planning the exact same thing for next year. I'm exited about it. Already checking things out.
so travelling with train is a must in Italy, can't wait to travel oneee
you will love it!
@@GregorBrown which one you prefer italo or treneitalia?
Trenitalia, more options for train times.
