I think that Melanie died of not only a broken heart, but also starvation and a broken mind thanks to her dad. I think her remains are still inside that house while her groom Jake's remains is in that black tomb in the graveyard while everyone believe that it's the bride's final resting place. Henry trapped Jake's spirit in the black tomb while he also trapped Melanie 's inside the manor!

Am I the only one who thinks Melanie is underrated? Like, I feel like the fans give the phantom way more attention even though she’s technically the main character. Also I wish more people talked about Jake or tried to develop his character. He could have been pretty interesting but they don’t really tell us anything about him as a person, besides the fact that he was the foreman of the mining company Henry owned and was apparently hired by Melanie’s uncle. Also, he seems to like playing guitar. And that’s all we know.
Tbh we really need a movie version. Made by competent people whose ideas aren’t ridiculous, though. #onecanhope
So far the only person I’ve seen actually try to develop Jake’s character is the tumblr account mal’s manor. They did an original design for him too and it looks WAYYY better than the official one Edit: their design for him isn’t original, it’s based off a different character from the comics but still better than the original

I do wish we could have an actual Phantom Manor film someday, the closest things we've gotten to that were a fans vision of it, as well as fanfictions I've read which featured Melanie as either her pre or post refurb personality, or a mix of both of them.

Poor thing, she went so crazy from isolation and loneliness (yes, you CAN feel lonely, even when you're surrounded by people) that she begs someone, anyone, to marry her so she can leave and escape her selfish father. (There's a possibility that he was so possessive of her because he was in love with her, like a Many Furs thing.)

Not our fault that Disney decided to have an overly possessive father haunting his daughter while she's in wedding attire. If you ever read "a Rose for Emily" or "the Fall of the House of Usher," you'll find more tales of wealthy incestuous mansion dwellers, which likely inspired the lore of the manor. -It's meant to make you uncomfortable, and it's meant to be subtext.

I had this idea that might deviate from the Phantom Manor backstory, what if Melanie wasn’t the only child and had two brothers who later became the dueling portrait ghosts.
Well we do know from the movies there brothers
In the story I've been working on. The Phantom isn't Melanie's father. In my fanfiction, Melanie died at an early age due to an incurable illness, the phantom was a reaper tasked with guiding her soul to the afterlife, but pitying her due to being but a child, the Phantom chose to bring her back to life by guiding her soul back to her body, but in the process, he was banished for defying the laws of the afterlife. He looked over Melanie, and fell in love with her, but that love became an obsession, and would kill anyone that dared to take her hand in marriage. The earthquake was caused by the Phantom, in an attempt to get rid of Jake, killing most who were present in thunder mesa. But Jake survived. Yadda yadda, jake and Mel are about to get married, The Phantom stops it, hanging jake, yadda yadda. Melanie is driven mad by it. And similar to Miss Havisham from Great expectations, she never took off her wedding dress, kept everything as it was the day of the wretched wedding, stopping the clocks to the time jake disappeared. She eventually grew old, but old age, nor suicide was what got to her. It was just a tired, broken heart that couldn't take it anymore, is what finally got her. The Phantom took this to his advantage, and tried to get her to marry him, but Mel, though melancholic and a bit cuckoo bananas, is still devoted to Jake, and keeps rejecting the phantom over, and over again for many years.

Here's my idea. The Phantom/her father has been keeping Melanie in a mortal state to better maintain his hold over her. However, with the help of the Gracey Manor ghosts, she finally sheds her mortal form to become just as powerful in the house as her father and so casts him into oblivion.
