Zeppelins were hated early in the war, as they were difficult to down and struck at civilian targets. Fortunately, the behemoths were also very spicy.

In WWII similar tech was used as a defensive measure against enemies as a trap in a sky.
Yea they were anti aircraft balloons
@@xAstropheliathey were specifically called barrage balloons and between each would be a steel cable to snag the propellers and Wings of fighter aircraft specifically over invasion beachheads.
@@constitution_8939 yes I know it’s just easier to tell people the common term for it than to explain this every time
@@xAstrophelia Sorry, It was not meant as a correction but just to add the official description should anyone else like more info on them.
How is a balloon on a string similar to a massive zeppelin? They both float?
I love it with the zeppelin crashes in the game!
It can change how a battle if fought in some cases.
Dude watching it fall and wipe out part of a town for the first time hits different
It’s always so cool how you can almost feel the battle freeze as everyone looks up to watch it crash
Zeppelin tornadoe glitch
Been playing bf1 since day one, it’s my fav game of all time!
A giant flying warship mothership that can dispatch biplanes sounds too sci fi for 1914
It sounds cool as heck though
Literally Ace Combat
The parasite fighters were difficult to use though as the top speed of the airship and minimum speed of the airplane barely overlapped so the planes were nearly stalling while the airship was putting everything into its engines
Steam punk
Sounds just like a star destroyer
Even though they weren’t to good, still gotta admit they look menacing
they just ovals in the sky though lol

Imagine being a pilot on a zeppelin
The pilot: no one can shoot me down two years later: help me!
Dude I feel like that would be the coolest thing ever 😭 I love zepllins
*They accepted their fate.*
A missed opportunity for Battlefield 1 to feature a war story where you play as part of an airship crew. It would have been a war story where you play as the Central Powers too.
I really wish that there was a Central Powers campaign, which basically acted as a counterpart to the main campaign. It would also have been cool to be able to play a mission focused on navy, and also one that focuses on the Zeppelins like you said.
Yeah it sucks there’s no central powers war stories. While the entente has the more ‘exotic’ parts of the war they could have done a German one or something, like an airship crew as you said
the whole point of the first mission is that both sides of the war are humans with emotions and stories, and in the later missions you slaughter hundreds of central powers soldiers
@@Kaiser_Franz_Joseffirst level: " Both sides are human." Rest of the campaign: "I'm going to pretend you did not say that."
@@foxymetroid "Represent the side that everyone always ignores? Hah! How about _no?"_ - DICE, probably.
Despite being slow they could ascend faster than a plane could
Really? Wow that’s surprising
@@balls2jawls a plane, especially one of canvas can only tilt so high before problems arise, below 45 degrees was typically how high they could point when trying to get to one of these and before incendiary rounds bullets would do very little to them, makes a small hole or is deflected They could be taken down with enough holes but the airship would probably have finished before then
@@thierrykaslan2756 was talking about 1910s aircraft but ye Pretty sure some interwar and ww2 aircraft could ascend faster than them too
@@theprancingprussian oh haha. Makes more sense then my bad
They were hard to shot down cause they flew at unreachable heights, and if you shoot it with normal bullets it's just gonna go through creating a small gas leak.
Hydrogen gas leak is a pretty big deal
@@FrFrijole All these early airships leak hydrogen gas. The jacketed bullets couldn't ignite the gas. Hence the introduction of the tracer/incendiary round.
@@racoming1035 hydrogen reacts violently with oxygen
@@FrFrijoleonly react with heat, else all the H2 would spontaneously combust all the time
Crazy how these things had a habit of just exploding for some very small reasons, but a fucking machine gun shooting at it couldnt take them down
It was mainly because they were in reality much higher and out of range. Machineguns could actually take it out with just short burst if in range
@@josefptacek113 I thought it was something like the bullet passes trough it too fast for its heat to ignite the gas
@@josefptacek113 bro no tf they couldn't that's why they invented Incendiary ammunition Bc normal bullets would shoot holes and pepper the zeppelin but thousands of small gas leaks were not even close enough to shoot it down
I always look up at it falling, no matter how tense the situation is.
It’s such a beautiful game

absolutely nuts that they used these gigantic balloons in wars, they just look like something straight out of an old scifi movie
It’d be pretty fucking scary though
Sure, Zeppelins are basically just oversized weather balloons at this point but there's something about a slow moving yet menacing 150 meter by 18 meter behemoth breaking through the clouds from up above that planes just can't seem to do
Damn it, Flak. Now i want to play BF1 again.
Anyone else miss behemoths in Battlefield?
Grand operations was one of the greatest things they’ve ever added. Idk why they didn’t continue with it
Winchester 97 "trench gun"
Hey hey mamma say the way you move gon make you sweat gon make you groove
They shoulda started making lead zepplins 🤣
When you pilot a zeppelin you know the landing gonna be fire

Theyre thinking a big blimp should cause the enemy to fear us While the enemy sees the blimp as a giant ass target🤣
The Hindenburg after hearing this. OH HELL NAH. *blows up
Love your content man!!!😀
its wild that we even have film of these things. they were night time bombers and film was so difficult to set up back then. so to have a camera rolling and see one in day time. Insane
judging by how much they were hated and flammable, they were the furries of their times
So the Zeppelin being hard to shoot down is true in Red Alert 2's Kirov Airship
Zeppelins mainly had a higher rate of climb than airplanes which made them harder to shoot down, all tracer rounds were incendiary, and the rockets would rarely fire in the desired direction in WWI. Zeppelins were majorly phased out because they bend from too high of an altitude, so it was harder to hit the target, whereas airplanes could hit very direct targets and fly with lots of control. Side note: the two-seaters in Battlefield were not attack planes, they were observation planes used for taking pictures, they were bad at dogfighting and only ever used as bombers if not observers.
Back when I was a kid I tried to figure out how to make them not suck. Nowadays I know how to do the maths, your clip made me wanna come up with a slightly less bad design with lessons learned from modern air, space and water crafts 😂
I want to fly one so bad in real life 😅
In the early war Planes could not fly as high as zeppelins so they could be untouchable until right over therir target at wich point they would fly down for better accuracy
Imagine if we managed to make cheap pure aluminum much earlier, airships would've been lighter and instead of a canvas skin, they would use aluminum sheets
The Martini Henry had incendiary ammunition made for it for this reason
I love the destruction these cause when they crash into the landscape
You don't need to sink it if you can injure the crew with enough sprays
I missed this game mode in bf1, it was so much fun
Anyone else play Crimson Skies back in the day? That game will always be what comes to mind when i see a Zeppelin.
I so miss bf1 it was awsome
More zeppelin content pls
Wish they bring zeppelin as war machine back…
okay but battlefield ones war stories were so good
WW1 man says 115 this ladys and gentlemen is the orgins refrence
This game is a master piece multiplayer and campaign
It's baffling how afraid everyone is of zeppelins being dangerous fire hazards. Yet they were litetally used in war and took a lot of effort to intentionally destroy. Even the famous crash had a bunch of survivors.
Said hydrogen should be more explosive
It was pretty hard to detonate since they typically didn't mix it with an oxidizer in the gas bladders.
In red alert 2 and 3, Kirov was a strong unit.

BF 5 is also great

They could have been used for something better, but noooooo Someone just had to bash his brain against the wall and said, "We are gonna use them for war and not touristic attractions
I wonder how advanced and powerful you could make a modern zeppelin.
The rot never stops
Planes couldn't reach the Zeppelins, not because of their weapons but because the Zeppelins could reach altitudes that planes couldn't reach due to the lack of air. It restricted both pilot and planes mechanics
Bro rockets can’t shoot it down but one little thing caused the Hindenburg to go down in flames😂
This is litterally 19x battle than 2142 in graphics effects litterally everything
It’s insane to me how they filled an entire aircraft with hydrogen and saw no issues
Helium was too expensive for the Germans so they used hydrogen and btw there were manyyyy issuesss
I miss Crimson Skies, bros...
Ok, but if BF1 taught me one this about zeplins, its that if they fly low enough for air suports 1 maxmims hevy machine gun could take it out.
Hold up, lemme get my Venator-class Star Destroyer and we’ll see what the Zeppelin only wishes it could be!

Never understood zeplins. Huge, slow moving balloons full of highly explosive gas.
No armor is the best armor
Man bf1 was so good except for the people who used that one shotgun i think it was called the model 1910 hunter Edit: it was the model 10-A that they used
So basically a ww1 star destroyer?
Biplanes actually couldnt reach zeppelins for most of the war

Why are they using a swordfish for WW1 combat? It didn’t see action until ww2.

Wdym difficult? It was a huge baloon filled with flammable gas, emphasis on the word baloon
These things are honestly kinda stupid cause even field guns could probably shoot it down quickly which the Belgians almost did in 1914 and while 9 men got wounded they did kick the airships ass
Nope
The thing was that they were capable of flying far higher than any propellor plane could fly or anti aircraft gun could effectively shoot at the time so they were essentially untouchable until they got over their target and only drop altitude over their target for greater accuracy. On top of that they were also actually able to ascend faster than planes since they just begin going straight up while planes lacking a 1:1 thrust weight ratio (aka: all of them) had to go up on an angle. They were effective at the beginning of the war but just like any arms race the defensive capabilities evolved right along side the offensive so by the middle they were being countered fairly easily and were eventually phased out when they realized maybe normal bombers are more capable in what they actually need them for
I mean it just makes a big target
