ROASTING Milan Fashion Week Fall 2021 (Versace's Monogram Disaster & Unfun Fendi Furs)

We are back with our third installment of our fashion month coverage! This time with our Milan Fashion Week reviews! We started off reviewing the new Roberto Cavalli collection by Fausto Puglisi, who some might know from recently making Doja Cat's Grammys 2021 Red Carpet look. We then got to see Kim Jones' first Ready-to-Wear collection for Fendi, and well it was interesting. From similarities to Bottega Veneta to a totally commercial revamp of the brand, there was a lot to discuss from the new Fendi. Then we saw Miuccia Prada & Raf Simons' second womenswear collection which definitely was reminiscent of the menswear collection we saw not too long ago. It was a better collection, and different in many ways from the menswear show, which could mean a stronger connection between Miuccia & Raf. Blumarine was a pleasant surprise during Milan, as the Y2K fashion inspired show by creative director Nicola Brognano got many interesting in the brand. From inspirations like Lil Kim to Paris Hilton, there was so much for those yearning for the glory days of the 2000s style. Valentino went for a commercial approach this season, focusing on interesting basics for their customers, and little pops of metallic colors here and there. The RTW definitely took on elements of the brand's Haute Couture styles in order to give a wider customer base more options. The finale collection we must discuss is Versace, which was a real let down. I want to enjoy the brand, but their releasing of their new monogram was a let down instead of a celebration. The Italians made statements this season, and while I won't say every statement worked, their voices were definitely heard!

    • There are hardly truly great collections anymore. Those that continuously stand out are mostly HC like IVH or Guo Pei. Most of what we see has been done before and better. I remember 2006-2011 was such an exciting time, also in terms of the fashion press with LOVE and other magazines being launched and all of them doing really outstanding editorials. I kept so many because fashion press was art back then. The smart phone and influencer culture have destroyed most of it, the focus and the fashion world generally have seen major shifts and a gradual disintegration of the art in fashion. Hermès producing a pink glitter Birkin and people like Trisha Paytas buying it are really symbolic for a new low-point, while the great designers die off or find work in different fields. So sad.

    • As an extremely skinny young girl, i still prefer high waist, since it helps to accentuate the few curves that I actually have (and imo is just more comfy). Still, I agree low waist (only) looks good on a body type, that would be unhealthy and unattainable for most women and would be a setback in the movement to normalize all female bodies.

    • @@user-pu5ce4ig5e I completly agree with you, I also prefer high waisted jeans for all body types. And it's fine If someone think differently. The problem was there were only low waisted jeans in the stores, and it made a lot of girls, me included, feel very insecure while shopping. I hope this time around there will be more versatility

  • Anyone else a little nervous about how y2k models are significantly skinnier than their counterparts? I just worry that this revival of the y2k fashion may come with a revival of the glorification of the ‘skinny-or-die, smoke-cigarettes-instead-of-eating’ outlook on the body. With how far we’ve come with body positivity and body neutrality I would hate to see the fashion community lapse back into their old ways.

    • Honestly, a bit. idk if people remember Paris Hilton and clones running around in size negative hip hugging jeans with a 2 inch inseam. But basically, there's very few people who can pull off that look, and with everyone and their mother only showing crop tops these days, I am a little suspect. It's almost as if brands preach inclusivity but they still aren't really making size inclusive garments.

    @rachaeldiviney712@rachaeldiviney7123 жыл бұрын
    • makes me sad that y2k 2.0 couldnt combine the style of that era with the social advancements of modern day (such as body positivity, diversity, etc) and having more options for different bodies. Instead, unfortunately, i think the target demographic (teen gen z) dont have much memory of the shit show that was the skinny-or-die 2000's, so they are fine with diving back into y2k culture, not knowing that it is probably back-tracking all that body acceptance society had worked toward. Hope the term 'thigh gaps' never come back into common lexicon... but with tiktok being the new tumblr, i have little hope for that :(

  • As a kid of the early 2000's i really hate the whole y2k look, i personally found it quite ugly and possibily the most restrictive in its style. Like, only a certain type of people could wear it and it would look good, everyone else had to suffer😅

  • my thoughts on the collections: cavalli: aside from the first dress, the flag, and the aaliyah-esque dress i really like it! what can i say i love me an animal print fendi: listen im a massive fendi simp and this collection did not change that i lived for the whole thing, special shout out to the fur coat with the python trim, iconic. also loved seeing all the models of colour prada: like luke, i want to study the prada customer. idk i never 'got' prada, it just isnt my thing tbh. some of the prints are fun and im not mad at some pieces, or parts of pieces as the case may be, but despite how kinda outlandish this collection is it's falling kinda flat for me and i doubt i'll remember it blumarine: oh. my. god. im in love. that's all i can say i am in love!! i remember y2k fashion and i feel like this collection blends the actual fashion and trends of the time with the idealized version that gen z has created in their heads. i need all of those pieces STAT valentino: not mad at it! i like the harlequin coat and the cape coat, can def see myself in them. the gold cable knit look? amazing, love it, need it. but for the most part pretty hit or miss (i guess i never miss huh) valentino: as far as im concerned versace has been going downhill since gianni's passing and this doesnt help those feelings. it's fine, im sure people will buy it, but 'fine' and 'commercial' shouldnt be the only ways to describe a versace collection. also the medusa head is sick why are they tossing it

  • The resurgence of the Karligraphy logo was weird to me because it was designed in 1981 but was immediately archived until Karl’s final collection in 2019... it’s just odd to me because it was a seasonal print that was gone for 2 seasons and then brought back by Jones. Makes no sense to me lol

  • I have to agree with you on the versace collection. It was underwhelming. The bags looked cheap, They made them out of coated canvas, and it just didn't work. It looks like a cheap MK bag.. I like the shoes.

  • I have no clue why they didn’t let Silvia Fendi continue as creative director, she was killing it creating innovative fur pieces and beautiful silhouettes. It’s strange how the lackluster Virginie at Chanel gets to continue on after taking the he from Karl yet the surprising and exciting Silvia hand to hand over the reins at Fendi.

    • Same here... the new monogram is fresh for the brand.. they just wanna try other options for their consumers to choose.. also the designs are not underwhelming... I respect his opinion but i respect the creativity of the designers... I would only comment maybe unless I can afford to buy any of versace items... i even hard time buying their chain reaction shoes... It’s Versace’s forte when it comes to innovation...

  • 'I would like to see a study of the Prada customer. It must be O so interesting.' Hilarious. You are such a pearl, Luke. Actually, I like to think of your name pronounced as Luc Meagher, mix of French and Gaelic. Touch of Paris, touch of Dublin, very NYC in the end. Analitycal and smash.

  • As I was working in documentaries, they said that you gotta be very careful with the you choose, because it sticks to you and sometimes curses you. Even more with a monogram. When I looked into the original monogram I saw that it was as if they had taken this crown surrounding the medusa and flipped it to create 3-D effect. What is worrying is that it creates the walls of a labyrinth. Hope the brand does not get lost into this monogram labyrinth it has created for itself. There was a monster in Dedalus labyrinth, not a Medusa but the Minauthor, who ate the young people sacrificed to it... Scary for a brand, no?

  • it took me a really long time to even wrap my head around the prints but once you try on one or two pieces. Style it and make it your own & even mix matched some stuff. It really comes together. It’s just a fun collection that actually got me hooked back on Versace to the point where the only underwear I’ll wear is theirs :)
