I just love how Barley is willing to give up his most prized possession just so that his brother can meet their dad, and in return, Ian gives up his greatest desire so that his brother can have the closure he needed. Such a beautiful movie in so many ways. ❤

I love the way Barley sacrificed his beloved van, to crash down the rocks, so the police couldn’t catch them, and later Ian returned the favor, sacrificing his moment to see his dad, to give Barley a second chance to say goodbye. He was too afraid to enter his dad’s hospital room. Ian did this, because he finally realized, Barley had acting like a father all through Ian’s life. He was always there for his little brother. Looking out for him, & pushing him to be more than he ever thought he could be. He never had a father, but he always had his big brother.

The best part about this scene is that earlier, Barley said his goal was to show his van off to his dad, while Ian had a big, long list of things he never got to do because he'd never met their father. Barley, in an effort to make his little brother happy, sacrificed his own van, to give them the best chance of completing the quest.

This really hit me. Barley loved that "beat up, old van." Both of them love their father to the point that Ian went out of his comfort zone to even evade the police. The burden of fault Ian must have felt hurt so much, but not as much as Barley seeing his brother in pain like that. When Barley spent a long time trying to use the spell himself, I imagine that it was more so Ian can see his father than for himself. Barley is Merry Poppins y'all. :')

This was one of the best scenes in this movie. My father, who barely watches anything made past 1995, and is extremely picky about what he likes, said that this movie was excellent. He said that it was over-the-top, but the makers of the movie knew it was over the top, and used it to their advantage. This scene perfectly captures that, I think. The dramatic, emotional music, the cliche movements of the car, the salute, the slow motion, it's all perfectly done. It knows that it's over-the-top, and it does it incredibly well.

I just love how Barley is willing to give up his most prized possession just so that his brother can meet their dad, and in return, Ian gives up his greatest desire so that his brother can have the closure he needed. Such a beautiful movie in so many ways. ❤
You said it there, sis 😌 👏
This movie makes me cry like a baby tbh. It’s a beautiful story
It's both amazing and sad at the same time 😭😭😭😭😭
Super underrated
Out like a Pegasus
"she was just a beat up old van" im going to disagree and say that Guinevere was a trooper and went out in glory right the way to Valhalla
I think Barley was trying to convince himself that’s all she was, so that the sacrifice didn’t hurt as much. He knew in his heart she was so much more 😥

Nah mate, you cried over a hero
If you cried at all during this movie then you need to get in control of your emotions, like seriously.
• The final song Barley had prepared, • The slap on the butt as the van goes 'onward' • The tire popping to cause a gallop • The violation tickets flying out the window looking like the van is spreading its wings for the first and only time as it • Sores through the air in to • A beautiful send off as it is buried.. Whoever wrote this is an actual genius
The lever to go forward is an O - which means Onward as Barley told Ian
She was just a beat up old van.
Why do I get tears over a van? Because Guinevere didn't go quiet. She went out like a warrior's steed. She made the greatest sacrifice and flew straight to Valhalla. R.I.P, you beautiful creature
SHE WAS NO VAN, SHE WAS A STEEL STEED AND NOW SHE RIDES IN VALHALLA SHINEY AND CHROME!!!
*thy noble steed
This was one of the most dramatic and amazing scenes of the movie (but lowkey also one of the more ridiculous movie scenes I’ve ever seen, in a good way)
And all the violation papers were to represent wings of the pegasus
it really was a perfect mix of dramatic and silly.
“May the Valkyries welcome you. And lead you through Odins great battlefield.. May they sing your name with love and fury! So that we may hear it rise from the depths of Valhalla! And know that you’ve taken your rightful place, at the table of kings... For a great Van has fallen.. a warrior and a friend.” 🦄

Anyone who has ever had their first car, and then had to give it up one day, knows exactly what Barley was feeling at this moment. The fact that Barley made that decision out of love for his brother makes it just one of the most beautiful movie scenes ever.
Off topic but once time I let a friend drive my car(it was the exact same as his first car). Five minutes into the drive my friend just started crying like a baby, I didn't know what to do. I guess it meant a lot to him.

When the glove compartment opened and traffic tickets/citations flew out the windows...did that meant the Van is now free to pass on?
No bro I think it was meant to symbolize wings flying out of the windows

One of the best scenes
I just realized if you listen closely when he starts the van up. You can hear the engine purr like a horse, then continue to make horse noises as it runs. Its the little things that make this scene so great 😭

One of the greatest scenes in animation history. Period.
This part literally makes me cry (And simultaneously laugh because it’s absolutely epic nature). His one wish was to show his dad his Guinevere and he sacrificed her for his brothers dream

@@Greg_Wiggle669This scene is sad man.
As a DM myself, this scene, is nat 20 roll for the van's final stand and self sacrifice.
Barley for sure rolled a Nat 20 on intelligence to determine how to aim that van so perfectly
This is one of those rare moments when it’s ok to fudge the dice a little. If a character is going to die, let it be in style, that they may be better remembered.
The best part about this scene is that earlier, Barley said his goal was to show his van off to his dad, while Ian had a big, long list of things he never got to do because he'd never met their father. Barley, in an effort to make his little brother happy, sacrificed his own van, to give them the best chance of completing the quest.
I drove a van throughout high-school and college that looked just like that....I can relate to this scene on a spiritual level the day I lost her.
I cried of how hard I laughed at this scene
The Van making whinnying sounds when he Pets it just hurts me even more it's like Guinevere is acknowledging Her Driver......No Her Rider's Decision and is at peace with it. She'll make it count.
WITNESSED!
This is hands down one of the best of Pixar, the more times I re-watch it, the more I appreciate it. It's a brothers story in a disguise of father and sons story, I really like how they handle the little twist at the end, a reminder to cherish that one person who's always by your side.
I can’t believe this movie made me cry and salute a van. I love It
I almost cried when I saw this. It was so sad. He loved that van. Cars have feelings too.😥
When they were talking about what they wanted to do with their dad, the one and only thing he wanted to do was show his dad the van he fixed up with his own two hands, to him the biggest thing he ever did. And he gave it up to have the chance to see him.
0:38 I love how he smacks the Van on the backside like you would any horse.
I love that the car whinnies back
He said it was just a beat up old van. I say it was the last Valkyrie of their time.
This is honestly such a great scene. Somehow hilarious and genuinely emotional at the same time. The music, the cinematography, just **chef's kiss.** Can't believe they managed to make me tear up for a van lol. Well done, Pixar.
If I had a nickel for every time I was sad over the death of a van I’d have two nickels. In retrospect I know it’s not a lot but it’s strange it happened twice

Ian learned a potent lesson in adventuring that day. That sometimes the sacrifice of something treasured to us for the sake of others is needed. For the ones we love the most especially. “She was just a…beat up old van…” She was your beat up old van Barley.

When the tire popped and the glove compartment opened and all the parking violations and tickets flew out the windows i got chills
This was a lovely movie and it clearly deserved more attention.
This scene hurt me on so many levels . Barley is the greatest big brother ever.
The tires popping and the galloping sounds was pure genius
the way he slaps Guinevere's trunk....
"And so it was, by the hand of Barley, did this steel steed, ride to the highway of Valhalla and into legend."
One could argue this is the most emotional roles these two took on
I know a lot of people call this scene silly because Disney wants us to be sad over a Van, but you don’t realize to Barley it was his passion and love, it meant a lot to him, and anyone that has to say goodbye to something like that is heartbreaking.
I LOVED THIS MOVIEEEEE, and this scene had me both laughing and crying!
R.I.P gwniver Your magic and horsepower will be missed
Rlp gwninvr your magic and
I seriously teared up over that dang van. There’s something to be said when the filmmakers can make you get emotional over a dang cargo van.
Onward is one of my favourite animatioms of all time. Great story about growing up, finding your own identity, brotherhood and fatherhood. Also it took the concept from Netflix's Bright and made it work. Also also... fantastic voice acting from Tom Holland and Chris Pratt.
"And for one shining, glorious moment, Guinevere soared, like the Valkyries of old. In her flowed the blood of kings, who watched from the Halls of Valhalla, smiling with pride. For even they themselves could not have given a more valorous and noble sacrifice for the ideals held most dear by her ancestors."
R.I.P. Guinevere Lightfoot.
They used surprisingly kickass music in this movie. The song he used for the van was fit in with the sacrifice
This is such a great scene - I didn't notice this until now, but at 0:38 he slaps the car's rump and it makes a creaking sound like a horse's whinny.
I didn’t hear that until now.
This scene is amazing! So much thought and love was put into it! But..... as a car guy I must say, that blowout would throw it into a hard left instead of a gallop.
So for more Pegasus parallels, at about 0:38 Barley closing the door is like smacking a horse’s rear to make it go and the car makes a whinny sound if you listen close.
I didn’t hear that for a while.
Am I the only one astonished how when the tire popped ut was basically galloping like a horse

This scene is perhaps the best example of personification in figurative language.

0:39, 1:02 turn your volume up and catch ol Guinevere whinnying, braying, or neighing (whichever definition you like) on her way to glory. Subtle and well hidden if you don’t have your volume up. Combined with the flat tire gallop, and the slap on the hind quarters, they did an awesome job conveying the message. Very cool.
I didn’t hear the first one for a while. The other I heard right away.
