Young Homeless Man Shares Real Truth About Sleeping Rough in Cardiff, Wales.

2018 ж. 11 Мау.
2 248 244 Рет қаралды

Andy has been sleeping rough in Cardiff, Wales for the last three weeks. Andy's dad is an alcoholic and he feels safer sleeping outside than at home with family.
When I first saw Andy is was sleeping. As a rule, I never wake anyone up. Andy shares about how he has been walking around at night and desperate for sleep. Sleep deprivation is common for homeless people sleeping rough. A good nights sleep is rare.
Although Andy shares about rough sleeping in the United Kingdom, the challenges of living on the streets homelessness are the same in the United States and Canada. People don't just walk by, they spit on you and call you names. People even with good intentions give an overabundance of food yet refuse to help with money or other basics needs besides Mcdonalds or Burger King meals.
Here's a post I wrote about panhandling and people begging for money: “Giving Money to Homeless People Is Okay byrslf.co/giving-money-to-hom...
Andy's story is powerful. He's only 21 years old and he's experiencing more pain and suffering than any young adult should. Sadly, Andy's story is far too common among homeless young adults. Instead of giving a sandwich we all must work together to end homelessness.
Thanks to all of your support, we got Andy inside tonight. He found me a little while after this interview with all of the change he had made from panhandling in his hand and said "I am going to give this to a charity box." Just by helping him get inside tonight it changed everything.
Special thanks to Crisis www.crisis.org.uk

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as KZhead, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

  • A homeless friend once shared a story about when he needed a toothbrush. He stood in front of a grocery store displaying a sign asking for money to buy the toothbrush. It wasn’t long before people started to give him food. He gratefully accepted multiple bags of fast food meals as he tried to collect money to buy a toothbrush. He set the bags next to him. Although it was clear he had already been given food, people continued to give him more. He never was able to purchase the toothbrush he needed. Jeffery is homeless in Toronto, Canada. “You’re cold. You get soaking wet. You never know where you’re going to sleep,” Jeffery said about homelessness. He also went on to say that the one thing you don’t have to worry about is food when you are homeless. kzhead.info/sun/Y7aJnr6jg19se3A/bejne.html People like to give food. Nonprofits have programmed the public the homeless people need food because they know people will donate money for food programs. For those of you having an issue with Andy talking about throwing away Burger King the point Andy is trying to make is he already gets plenty of food - too much food even - yet people still keep giving him food and more food. What would you do with 15 hamburgers? The public needs to be educated about homelessness and real needs. The simple solution is to ask and listen - then help when you can. You can never go wrong giving out socks - How to Give Socks to Homeless People. kzhead.info/sun/hbqBkcpsfaapmX0/bejne.html

  • When I was 18 years old I was living on the streets of London going through the same issues problems as you. I woke up one day and said enough. I walked straight into an army recruitment centre in the Strand London and said I want to join the army. This was the biggest and most important decision of my life. In the army you get fed, housed and paid a kings ransom. That was 26 years ago. Since then I have left the army, been to university, got a masters degree and now I work for a top global company as a consultant. I earn a fantastic salary that I never thought was possible. I have no regrets about making that decision 26 years ago. Today you need to go to 8th Floor, Southgate House, 84 Wood Street and ask about joining the Army. A big decision that will change your life for the better.

    @PamweChete2503@PamweChete25033 жыл бұрын
    • Id agree.Unfortunately and as I'm sure your aware the Army isn't the same thing it was 26 years ago. Most of the recruitment process these days is done over the phone. You need to have an Email address and a working smartphone to download an app before you even talk to a serving soldier face to face. If however he rocked up at an office and told them the situation its just luck of the draw if there is an actual serving recruitment team there that can help him through the process. Not just a MOD contracted civvie in a 'be the best tracksuit' who only knows how to play dvds and what one certain unit did during 1984 to 2002. During peace times it would be trickier as the MOD doesn't pump as much into recruiting . Also remember its not for everyone and no matter how completely useless some of your blokes have been, it does take a certain type of person to even see it as a possibility.

The modern miltaries (and in Britain's case, their old empire) of the west throw their weight around the world for PROFIT/POWER/RESOURCES at the expense of innocent communities. No blood for oil, minerals, and strategic lands. Please don't join the military. If you are American, consider joining Americorps, a domestic community service program that trains/pays young people.

Got off the bus and headed towards queen street station, and there was a homeless man huddled up in the corner. I didn't have any money to give him, but I had cigarettes and I had time. I gave him some cigarettes and sat down with him for a chat. I couldn't believe how many people walk past in their own little world, or laughing amongst their friends when somebody is literally at their feet struggling. How many hundreds of them have a 50 pence piece in their pocket, and they won't even give that. It genuinely is unbelievable. I haven't seen him for a long time now. I often wonder how he's doing. • StonerAardvark That's my point. They are obsolete. Who needs them? Tradition? When they are spending the citizens money at a rate that could house and feed the entire homeless population in Britain? You do the math.

      @klwthe3rd@klwthe3rd5 жыл бұрын
    • Well yeah, tradition and for the Queen to act as head of state as President's do for Prime Ministers in other countries. Look let me make it clear that I agree that the concept itself of a Monarchy is obsolete, but what method of getting rid of it would you suggest? The Queen performs state duties almost daily meeting foreign dignitaries, so do other members of the royal family. Since the restoration this has been the case more and more with each monarch. I won't try and claim that tourism would somehow completely collapse in this country if we got rid of the royal family, but it would certainly be a tremendous hit. The Royal wedding alone a couple weeks back brought in over £1 billion, many magnitudes higher than what they get from the taxpayer each year. On that note, I'd definitely agree that that should be cut right down, especially for the 'minor royals'. But bear in mind that the government receives a large percentage of the profits from the crown estates so it isn't as enormous of a dreg on public finances as we get most of it back (not including that tourism figure). I think I'd agree with you on the general idea of the monarchy being rather outdated, a queen and soon to be king in 2018 does sound genuinely ridiculous, but in practice simply getting rid of them isn't that simple.

      @StonerAardvark@StonerAardvark5 жыл бұрын
    • StonerAardvark well said and you educated me on all the duties that the Queen performs. I did not know that. I thought the Prime minister was responsible for most foreign representation and parallels the position of President like here in the United States. You have your legislation and Prime minister so my belief was the Monarchy is just for show, costing the taxpayers money in the long run. You seem highly intelligent on this matter so you have raised great suggestions on how this might not be the best way to cut costs and help the homelessness situation in your country.

  • As somebody who is homeless for 2 years after getting out of serving our military. I can tell you for a fact that all of these problems that you all are commenting on or absolutely true. What do you think homeless people do stupid stuff in the streets to get arrested we do it on purpose because if we know we go to jail we can have three free meals a warm place to sleep in a free shower where we won't be sleeping outside. Why do you think a lot of homeless people do that stupid stuff in the middle of the winter? So they at least have a warm place to sleep. I did stuff like that when I was homeless cuz I had no choice because you go days without eating when I was homeless you all I had people pee on me. I had somebody like my sleeping bag on fire when I was in the middle of the night when I was sleeping food dumped on me. I've been cussed out had stuff thrown at me from outside of car windows. He spit on me dump drinks on me. People do horrible things to you when you're homeless. And I wasn't doing anything bad. I've never done drugs in my life. I'm an ex Army veteran. I drink on special occasions for birthdays and on New Years. That's it. But I was just homeless I wasn't doing any bad. I was just outside. And people would just constantly stay the same thing that they would say to this young man. Get a job. Stop doing drugs. You're a junkie. You're a bum. You're worthless. I'm a human being I was just struggling.

    • And at the top of it all, people consider the homeless to be parasites of society. "Just get a job and stop being homeless!" they say. I know a guy who as a manager of a retail store and was fired after the boss discovered he was homeless. Plenty of jobs and employers require you to have a rooftop, much because a lot of people think being homeless is the same as being an addict, the society's scourge.

  • I am literally sitting here in tears, sobbing uncontrollably because I've been through this. I've just discovered this channel tonight. The majority of people leaving comments are expressing compassion, caring, concern, love, and sympathy. But in some of these videos the comments are incredibly insensitive, cruel, and judgmental. Please, anyone who feels the need to judge (whether the person is a drug addict, alcoholic, or not) ... please don't. Don't make jokes. This is horrific... not funny or something to laugh at. This really can happen to anyone. It happened to me, and I'm just an eye blink away from being right back in it. Everyone these days is one or two paychecks away. This is going to stay with me, in my soul, for the rest of my life, and it will do the same to this lovely, young, sensitive man. It's profoundly destructive, and one of the worst forms of violence anyone could possibly endure. Please pray for him. He is more of a man than most men who will watch this. He is courageous. God bless us all.

I noticed that drugs and alcoholism is rampant with the homeless and those problems often started before they ended up on the streets. He was a recovering heroin addict who had been homeless for years but has been clean on methadone for 7 years now. He found someone willing to take him in and help rehabilitate him - had the chance of a lifetime. This is while I was dating him. But he developed a major Xanax addiction in the process which became out of control. He was thrown out from where he lived because he trashed the place and was wrongly accusing his roommate of taking and hiding his pills because he blacked out and lost track of how many he took. He was arrested and released but I have no clue where he is or what became of him. I have no clue if he’s even alive anymore. He hasn’t been active on Facebook since and no longer has a phone since he left it where he was living. The lack of closure has completely turned my life upside down with worry. It’s so hard to go on and even function at work not knowing what became of him or if he’s safe or even alive. I’ve never been through such torturous heartache like this
