  • One BIG problem with a Russian attack on Svalbard - especially by sea, is that the Russian Northern Fleet is based in Murmansk..... a city that is supplied by only ONE ROAD. The ONLY way to reach there is a single road that is within EASY striking distance of Finland, which, of course, is now a NATO ally, and, along with Sweden and Norway, have been allied together as part of the Nordic Defence Cooperation. Between the 3 countries, Russia would have an EXTREMELY difficult time.

    @normmcrae1140@normmcrae114018 күн бұрын
    • That single road supplying Murmansk is likely why more Arctic military bases are being re-equipped, re-opened afresh, and also why there is the expansion of an ice-breaker fleet, to improve that logistic. Russia obviously wants to control the Arctic region. Remember also, the Arctic, as a region, while still vast, is much smaller than maps suggest, so distances from those other military bases to Svalbard and everywhere in the Arctic, are less.

Norway is better off with armed forces, munitions and allied support (NATO) now than Ukraine was at start of their war and look how they managed to stave off defeat, in open flat lands, reclaiming much of what was first taken. Two years later, Ruzzia has been unable to reclaim the lands they first took and will never succeed. Norway already has a natural defense in place along with years of preparations ... Surely the attacking force, and the Russian naval base won't be cut off by Finnish artillery, guerillas, and anti-vehicle mines spread all over that single road they would need to use. • Invading Norway from the north is very difficult. Tanks go well on Finmarksvidda, but after that there are mountains and more mountains with lots of bridges. There are no railways in the north. You have to go all the way down to roughly the middle of Norway to find railway tracks. If the Russians were to attack Norway, I would probably think that they would attack us with missiles. Invading with infantry is unlikely because that would probably have been suicide. Bridges will be blown up and it would be very easy to take out columns of infantry when there is only one main road.

  • There is no logical reason for Russia to invade Svalbard if the motive was the natural resources. First of all we don't know if there are large amounts of oil and gas there. But we know the the russians have found large amounts of gas in the same region. However these resources have been too difficult the extract because of the harsh environments. Besides that, the time window for fossile fuels is running out. The most important natural resourses on Svalbard is the fishing resource on the ocean around the islands. And it has an important strategic location for NATO. This means that NATO will never accept that Russia takes control over Svalbard.

    • No, it is not click bait, but many people, like the Ruzzian population among many others, are not aware of all of Ruzzia's actions. Watching this video makes me wonder why we are even entertaining the thought of Ruzzia invading Norway. It wont be a war that Norway has to fight alone, it will be NATO that Ruzzia is attacking. Can guarantee Ruzzia will NOT be annexing ANY NATO lands. They dont stand a chance no matter how you slice it.

      @MsSquirl00@MsSquirl0018 күн бұрын
  • Seems like sensationalistic clickbait. Yes, the northern areas are strategically important and will be even more important with a more open Arctic ocean. No, Russia is very likely not preparing for a massive war with Norway. I am sure they have plans and have worked on scenarios, which they probably have for all their neighbors. But their military is tied up in Ukraine for the foreseeable future. And it would be suicide for Russia to try anything like that since Norway, Sweden, and Finland all are NATO members. The ONLY exception I can see is that Russia MAY try something on a small scale in Svalbard to see how NATO responds, and then either pull out quickly (if NATO takes action) or continue to see how far they can go before NATO takes action.

    @pedroamado2086@pedroamado208618 күн бұрын
    • Its not clickbait. Everyone thought the same thing with Ukraine and look how that turned out. Only saving face for Ruzzia was that Ukraine is not NATO. Yet ... As always, Ruzzia will push the envelope as far as they can get, putting in place any and many strategic plans. Am sure Putler is waiting for the results of US elections this fall to determine how he proceeds further. He might test the waters at some point to measure NATO responses. If his propaganda machine is again effective in getting trump back in, trump WILL pull out of NATO and most likely side with Ruzzia. At that point, Ruzzia will have little fear of NATO.

  • No. Just no. Svalbard isn't even /really/ a part of Norway. It would be more accurate to say that it's under Norwegian administration as part of the Svalbard Treaty, which asserts Russian access to natural resources, allows Russian settlements and prohibits any form of military installments. A Russian attack would void this agreement, granting actors like USA and China access to claim sovereignity, blocking any kind of Russian involvement and allowing a rather uncomfortable military presence in the bering sea. This would be *very* undesirable for Russia, even without their Ukrainian struggle, and it could potentially trigger a Nato article 5 to booth. I'm sure mr Putin has a long bucket-list of military actions he wants to unleash upon the world, but realistically, this one should be pretty close to the bottom.

I think that even if you ignored the might of the US navy (which one really shouldn't) each individual member of NATO could take on the Russian navy, nevermind all of them at once. Heck, even Ukraine, which doesn't really have a navy, is beating back the Russian navy in the Black Sea. The Russians don't stand a chance in the North Sea, especially now that NATO is wise to Putin's ambitions, is unified, and most member countries are increasing their defence spending.
