We Made a $5,000 Hermes Wallet for $70!
Hermes is a big inspiration for many leathercrafters. They've been a huge name in hand sewn leathergoods for many, many years and their craft is world renown. He've admired the Hermes bifolds for a long time, especially Hermes Alligator bifolds and we decided to order up the exact materials they use to see if we could make one too!
This leather bifold is hand made in the Hermes style with American Alligator belly and italian vachetta (Hermes would use French Calf, which is priced similarly but we like this leather a bit better). The pattern is simple, but the construction is very time consuming and results in a beautifully performing bifold wallet. It did not cost $5,000 to make either, only $70!

    • Gotta take into account marketing, real estate, overhead, profit margins, sales, and number of people buying it. But yes markup is probably 10-15 times the pure manufacturing costs

      @thieney@thieney4 жыл бұрын
    • thieney don’t forget the labor cost to make it - it’s not materials alone.

      @grantvergottini8579@grantvergottini85794 жыл бұрын
    • @@thieney yea that's true, when you buy everything to start a company or brand and make a product, even it costs $200 to make, say an iPhone 10 you still have an overhead and need to adjust price to market value and cover all costs of continued manufacturing while getting a return on the investment and then profit. The new Toyota Supra is a very good example, but for brands like coach there is some pricing due to name only.

    • The flaw in these kinds of videos is the fact that they don't consider the time it takes them to do it, because they're making them for themselves so their time is "free", but in a company it's not like the people work for free, so if $70 is how much the material itself is worth that's not the total amount of money a company spends. Using some random numbers, let's say that a Hermes employee in France costs €5000 a month on average, so $5600, and let's say that those people work 22 days per month on average, that's a daily cost of $250 per employee, plus shipment costs, the maintenance costs of the factory, property taxes, VAT etc etc, and a company has to make a profit so hundreds of dollars may be a fair price, maybe not $5000 but $70 is not the complete picture for sure. The quality matters as well, I'm not an expert of high quality wallets so I can't really tell whether this one was rushed or if it was the same quality as the $5000 one tbh

    • I think the point is this dude wanted to buy a $5000 designer wallet for no reason other than it said *hermes* and also the fact that each wallet also costs the life of a small alligator only for them to only use like 1/4 of the underbelly for a feckin wallet.....

      @rocketman3285@rocketman32852 жыл бұрын
    • While it's a beautiful wallet and I enjoy his videos, I do find the click-baity-ness a bit misleading and annoying. The material cost of this wallet is much higher than $71. To say that is a $35 piece of gator belly is absurd. It's the prime section of an exotic hide. That's like buying a side of beef and saying the cost of an 8oz filet is $2.50.

      @DeadbeatChild@DeadbeatChild2 жыл бұрын
    • @@DeadbeatChild I understand what ur saying but I don't think ur looking at it the correct way. If you do buy a side if beef that costs say $1000. You have to look at it as how many filets, etc can I get out of it and how much can I charge. Then you divide it by that and come up with a price. I don't know but I think that's what he did. He took the hide, divided it up seeing how many wallets he could make from it and came up with a price. It's the same with anything you buy in bulk. I do it making wood projects when I buy a nice piece of black walnut or another exotic wood. Either way, it just shows, if he used the same materials, how overpriced all the big designer names are.

      @chrisdemeglio7983@chrisdemeglio79832 жыл бұрын
    • @@chrisdemeglio7983 Fair point. I'll elaborate. He says he's purchasing the exact materials as Hermes, but I am not sure--if they are purchasing grade I, the cost will be higher. Even at ii/iii a hide like that is still going to run 350 dollars minimum. Also, he does not cut the pattern in the same orientation as Hermes which would be lengthwise, and for optimal symmetry--you could only get a single wallet out of a hide like that (edit:looked through some examples--they all feature the umbilical scar, confirming one wallet per hide. If you wanted to buy this single piece on its own, they're gonna charge a fortune because you're basically stripping the hide of its primary anti-counterfeit mark). Furthermore, price per sq-ft is an irrelevant metric as price is calculated by age of animal, flawlessness, and finish. While I agree that a lot of luxury goods are obscenely marked up, I've seen Hermes craftsman at work and they are MASTERS. That kind of labor is very expensive. A $5000 Hermes alligator wallet is a totally different beast than a when Gucci sells a branded tshirt for $900, and shouldn't draw the same degree of ire. So I stand by my point about this being click-baity. I would prefer he give a little more credit where credit is due.

      @DeadbeatChild@DeadbeatChild2 жыл бұрын
    • I’d use it too. But it’s not Hermes. It’s a glorious Home made wallet. Now go buy the Hermes and do a resiliency test. Let’s see which one falls apart sooner lol

    • @Mosinlogan You could get more out of the leather, but he took his piece right out of the middle which is the most aesthetically pleasing part of the hide, because it's essentially mirrored. Similar to bookmatching wood for a guitar top. You can conserve hide by being more efficient with where you take your pieces from, but it won't look as nice. This would be factored into the cost of the wallet, because you're probably only getting 2-3 wallets from the hide instead of 4-5 or whatever.
