My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

  • I love that you use a shelter dog! First because its much more realistic to see actual training when the dog doesnt know many tricks, and even more so because its not your personal dog with that relationship. And second because that dog gets to get out and play and learn, and will be maybe more likely to be adopted.

I also love how you work with shelter dogs and you don't seem to mind what type of breed. You are one awesome trainer, it would be awesome to meet you and get advice on my girl, would you ever do something on digging and stealing things and destroying them? Because Dusty just thinks everything is hers from plastic bags to pot lids (I don't know how she got it either?!!) Thank though for helping with everything else :) I put most of it to Dusty and she is an all round good girl (mostly of the time)

I was working under people who believed in e-collar and punishment based training. I very quickly changed my mentality and have even switched from Studio Art major to Animal Sciences. • Yesh! Finally a good positive understanding trainer. He actually teaches dogs what to do and not just what not to do. Like you can get the treat if you do right. And not just pull his leash saying you can not get that, I stop you. He's not between the thing the dog wants and the dog. He's the tool the dog is gonna get the treat with. So the dog doesn't try to get the thing when he's not around stopping them.

  • I'm at the ground floor of building a business that allows me to work with dogs. So I'm starting with dog sitting in my home or the owner's. The more I work with different breeds, ages and level of good dog behavior has made me realize that I would like to be a dog rehabilitate and people training. There's so many videos I've watched to learn how to train dogs, and everyone of them had their own personal styles. Then I implement the different techniques I've learned to figure out what works for me. Then my dog becomes the experimental guinea pig. Thank you for making this video. I have 2 dogs I'm sitting for for 3 days, and I needed a quick solution for leave it and look at me. Velvet and scarlet were obsessing on my pet bird. They won't leave him alone. Thank you Zak, you keep it simple and make working with difficult dog behaviors "do-able".

We usually spoil our dog and feed raw, but my husband and I are trying to save more money so we can adopt another dog in a year or two. Plus, kibble is easier to store and train with. After a lot of research, I decided to go with Fromm, but they don't sell it anywhere in Cambridge, MA. I'd have to drive at least 30 minutes to a suburb to get it from a retailer. Having it shipped is so much easier! Hope my dog likes it although I'm sure he'll LOVE it since he loves all food.

The thing is with leave it he seems to connect it with stay so when I drop the treat he waits but it doesn't work in real world. Outside he always grabs rocks to chew and when I say leave it he just picks it up and runs away further to go chew it there. What can I do?

  • Awesome. I just got a Vizsla-Pit mix on Friday. I started watching your videos to get ready. I took my new dog to the dog park when nobody was there. Of course, my dog was bored. So, we went to a tot lot. Oh yeah. My dog jumped the tennis court nets, went down the little slide, ran through the tunnels, jumped over picnic tables, and more. I think I have a future agility contender here. It was so easy to train him to get him exercised. But, we also live on a boat, so we’re training on board as well. This guy’s confidence on the boat grows by the minute. Look at me and leave it, are coming along as well. It blows my mind that you train us at the same time you train dogs, and it works. Thank you so so much. I am able to have an amazing dog and make it work. He was a shelter dog by the way. We are bonding beautifully.

  • sweet pup, thank you for this videos featuring shelter doggies ! so many wonderful dogs and cats in shelters in need of loving homes. I adopted two cats and two pitties from shelters in the last 7 years and they are the loving, sweet animals. My pitties are extremely mellow, a short half hour walk per day and they sleep the rest of the day and night...super mellow...all kinds of dogs @ shelters, high energy, mellow energy, dog friendly, cat friendly, all are individuals

  • This is so, so helpful. Thank you for featuring a high energy shelter dog - I just adopted a 2 year old mutt from a shelter a month ago and it has been such a challenge. It took us about that full month for him to realize sit and down were a better way to get treats than jumping and trying to snatch treats from our hands! This video gives me hope that we can continue to make progress with him even though he didn't learn this stuff as a puppy... and has really helped me remember that "leaving it" for two seconds is JUST as much a learning victory as "leaving it" for an hour.

  • Man I needed to watch this again. I adopted my dog July 28, and she is crazy wild and very food motivated as well as toy motivated. I can't thank you enough for helping me. I couldn't find this video and remember how the training went. She jumps like crazy after "Sit" to get the chicken. I need to go back to "Look At Me" and get that down solid. Sit and down are done.

  • Thanks so much for this video using an untrained dog! I've watched so many videos and it's obvious that the dogs already had training and knew the commands. They are helpful of course but seeing a dog acting like my new untrained 28 lb. 7ish month old rescue puppy and how to work with that level of excitement is very very helpful! Thanks for giving this shelter boy your time and attention as well.
