  • In the late 70's an old antique collecting neighbor of ours had in his shed/shop an old Harley that looked nearly identical to this one, carbide headlight, atmospheric intake valves and all, though it was a V twin. One of my would've, could've should've moments of my past, wish I'd have gotten it now, but... I wanted a "chopper". The ignorance of youth.

  • No conventional intake valve or pushrod or intake camshaft lobe, but obviously a side-valve exhaust valve with pushrod and camshaft exhaust lobe. A new concept for me to chew on. Thanks for what you do.

    • check out the intake atmospheric valve spring, today we only need a reed valve to do the job on 2strokes

I've ridden more than 150.000 km (93.000 miles) on a Brooks Colt (on a bicycle, without springs) and my nuts are good healthy yet. And don't forget the wonderful single longstroke vibrations - they'll massage the nut pain away 😀!

    @tobylangdale95@tobylangdale953 жыл бұрын
    • Only 4 horsepower you say? People don't understand or respect what a horsepower really is. You'd be hard pressed to generate a tenth of a horsepower for a sustained duration. A tenth of a horsepower is lifting 55 pounds of weight up a foot in a second. Every second, over and over. So 4 HP is lifting up a ton a foot in a second. That's like carrying a small car up a flight of stairs. Now how far do you think you can get?

    @fidelcatsro6948@fidelcatsro69483 жыл бұрын
    • Very true. I guess motorcycles were for the elite crowd back then. Of course, that bike would go where Model T's could not, given that most roads were dirt and rut-filled.

  • Could you do a video on spark advance and retard on these older bikes? The how and why’s please?

    @permutatechguy@permutatechguy3 жыл бұрын
    • .i think you needed to advance the ignition firing as you went faster to allow time for the fuel to burn at firing stroke, and retard the firing at lower speeds to allow the piston to complete its top most position...todays engine electronic ignition has these chores already mapped out in the chip from factory in relation to the engine rpm..

    @Very_Angry_Citizen@Very_Angry_Citizen3 жыл бұрын
    • Today we're a bit better at manufacturing than they were over 100 years ago. So you have to adjust the price of goods for that too. Those Harleys were basically custom handmade pieces. They were just doing it on a large shop scale.

I got an old Lesco fuel can that belonged to my Grandfather who used it for everything from fueling up his lawnmower to putting gas in the old farm bike upon which he taught me to ride. Ridding sessions lasted as long as there was gas in the can....
