This song really reminds me of my ex-boyfriend. We were dating when this song first got released back in 2005. We were only teens at the time. He really loved this song and so did I. He always talked about how cool it would be if we were still cool if we ever split up everytime we heard the song. I always told him not to talk such nonsense, naively thinking we would never break up. Anyways, we ended up parting ways. Didn't see or run into each other for years. We eventually ran into each other years later as adults and it wasn't awkward or anything. We hugged each other like we were old friends from childhood and chatted for a bit. But before we parted ways, he said to me, "We're cool, right?". I smiled and replied "Always". Thinking of the Gwen song we both adored as teens.

The song is about Tony Kanal, guitarist from No Doubt, whom she dated for some time until he broke up with her. She was married to Gavin Rossdale at the time the song came out. "Don't Speak" is about the breakup with Tony Kanal. I remember learning about that song's origins from a magazine when I just started college (no internet or social media back in 1995!). Hearing these old songs is so nostalgic... makes me long for a time that we can't go back to, when things were simpler and the world wasn't so fucked up.

I used to take the song literal, but then when I watched the video closely, you can see that it's not completely cool and it will always be difficult. But if you really love and respect the other two people, you will try to deal with it. At least that's how I feel. Seriously I feel like this could have been a recent video. The filming and wardrobe are great but I'm over Gwens Snookie poof, it worked for the punky rockabilly look but now she just looks so much better in every other style imo. Funny how that became her signature.

First time I heard this song was, what? 14-15 years ago? I remember thinking it's IMPOSSIBLE to have this kind of relationship. But then I chatted with my ex last night, we talked about his 2 wonderful daughters and I said "Hi" to his wife... then this song just pops into my mind again. And it actually feels good to experience this kind of relationship. Not everyone can. After all that we've been through, I know we're cool.

same for me as well. i reconnected after a few years with my ex who was probably the first man i ever really fell in love with, and we have remained friends ever since. theres never any jealousy over our respective relationships and its just really nice. to be friends with someone you had such a deep connection with, who you knew inside and out, and respect and admire now as you've gotten older. 10/10 would recommend being friends with your not-so-toxic exes.
