What absolutely sold me on him as an antagonist was him saying "you didn't value ANY of them." He wasn't angry about Puss just being alive, he was angry about him never *appreciating* and living 8 arrogant lives instead.
such good writing by dreamworks.
I agree. I am still going to ask for fun. Why should Death care whether someone valued his life? You die either way.
The lack of growth really irk’d him. This gift being squandered.
Bro he had me when he not only made puss bleed but made him bleed that shit was insane
it gives the idea that he isn't just pissed off with his existence like any old boring antag; his sole purpose as the villain was to show how valuable puss's life (or, well, lives) really is. notice the scene when he finally saw how much puss valued his last life to the point that he physically fought death right in the face for it, he backed away; it goes to show that he only hunted him down until he learned to value his own lives. i think the whole "i love the smell of fear" is a pretty cool metaphor from the writers that if you fear death all your life, you'll never learn to appreciate it while you're still alive. you'll constantly run away, trying to keep that fear and hold it deep down. that's why he enjoyed it so much whenever puss got scared for his life; he knows that he can manipulate and basically ruin a person's life just by his existence (or in other words, just the mention of death. some people get horrified by the idea of it) but like in all of our lives, we sooner or later have to confront death. dreamworks W, 10/10.
I love it how Puss never defeated Death.... because no one can defeat death, he just got more time. Such a well written character.
He beat his fear of death
He beat Death. Just not by killing him. If all you see is living and dying then you miss the point. It's about honesty. Deaths expectations were not matching reality. This is the same reason Puss lost at first. In the end Death knew he couldn't kill Puss under those conditions. If he did it would be over a lie. Death is too "Straight up" for that.
He beat death, in the sense where he realized that he should value and cherish his life and not wish for more.
Nobody but Jesus can defeat death
Because Death is not alive!, you can't see him on the map because he's not alive
He wasn’t a villain, never was, he’s a force of nature.
He is an antagonist
@@proisborn Jack Horner was an antagonist, death comes for us all, therefore he is a force of nature.
@@renna495 People use nature as an excuse too much. Death is a sadist. He takes pleasure in the suffering of others yet pushes them to do better while presenting the options. By "nature" most people fail to do such things. Death is a wiser, smarter wolf. That has seen much and learned much. He's a teacher and he knows to play. While trying to get others to do the same. Because if you don't learn to play in the worst then is life worth living in the first place? Death has seen so much he's not even surprised when Puss crawls through the toilet. At which point even a sadist (such as myself) finds Puss too pathetic to kill. Death taught Puss by breaking them down until they were worse then dead. That's when people learn. As for Jack, he's more one that knows about apathy. He's logical and will brush off a judgemental hypocrite giving into fear and hate when they lose control. The cricket was doing ok until that point. Observation without judgement will go further. If all people do is teach grudges and resentment then that's why Jack exists. they learn it from somewhere. From every "nice" hypocrite that dares to pretend they're innocent. From every fool that dares to pretend they understand when they didn't pay attention. In this Jack and Death have that in common. That hypocrites blind to their own sense of "good" are creating the path of destruction from ignorance. Jack and Death at least mean and intend what they do. And they're done with regret. Done being miserable just because others judge them when they don't even try to understand. Who even asks?
@@Veldazandtea I think you missed the whole speech that he laid out about him being death, he didn’t mean it metaphorically or or poetically or theoretically or in any other fancy way, he’s death. Straight. Up. Which is a natural thing, everyone dies, you can argue in the sense that he was trying to take him early, but you cannot deny that he is a naturally occurring process in everything living, im not saying he is nature, but he is a part of the process of life, he is the end, he is a force of nature in this scenario.
He's villainous in the context of the movie, since he's hunting Puss early
I can't get over the fact how well designed he is. The cape from the classical depiction of robed death, a wolf predator to a cat, khopeshes from ancient Egypt to symbolize Anubis, the eerie whistling, just perfect!
death uses a pair of sickles not a pair of khopeshes.
That's not even counting the gold coins in his eyes, an ancient greek tradition fee for the dead to cross into the underworld. Meaning he literally said 'Your death is on me.'
@@Falkaster Khopeshes' appearance looks close to a sickle though. It's NOT a khopesh, but, it is CLOSE.

@@zealisrealfan Humpty Dumpty was trash, his reveal did not have any foreshadowing and served no purpose to the story. Only made him seem more ridiculous, especially dressing up as a cat and hiding in a skirt
A really cool detail is that during the giant fight when the crowd of people do a wave you can spot the wolf in the alleyway.
The fact that when Death resigned, his wistle switched from a distorted tone to a relaxing tone, with just changing a few notes. That was amazing.

I love how the whistle becomes sinister and haunting the more you hear it, but then after the last battle, all the tension from it disappears, it almost sounds nostalgic?
Fun fact: If you listen to them both closely or play them side by side, the earlier whistles compared to the last one are different! Every other time he whistles, it's lower and more sinister, whereas the last one is definitely higher and more of a welcome send-off. I dunno if it was transposed to a major key or just shifted in register or something else, but it's higher nonetheless :D
@@Complexicon_of_a_Startist i saw a comment that explains this so il just paste it here: the whistler in mythology: the further away it sounds, the closer he actually is. And at the ending, the whistle sounded close as he was walking away.
There is also a key change for the last whistle, I believe all but the last was in the key of F while the last was in the key of A, it’s remarkable what difference a key change can have on a piece

One thing I really love about this that's the mark of an experienced editor, is that the music isn't overbearing and in our face and the clips are perfectly chosen and blended together. There are plenty of videos out there where some genertic epic music is added in that doesn't fit the scenes and it's just so distracting it pulls you out of the moment. In this video your focus keeps getting pulled towards what's being shown to you and you only kinda feel the perfect music in the background that enhances what you are seeing, but doesn't try to changeit. Well done!
I felt like I was watching a movie trailer. Music complements the video, no matter what it is.
100% agree with you. The music was perfectly chosen, the shots and scens were chosen and organized in a perfect order to coincide with the music, and the overall editing was on point for this absolutely an underrated video edit that needs to be seen by more people and creators to understand how to make a proper and justifiable edit.

I love how offended Death was that Puss had 9 lives, not just how he spent them but the very fact he was privileged to have more than one, like it was an affront to the natural order. Little details like that really added a lot of depth to his personality. Excellent character writing, truly a master class.
Death is a fair entity. But when people disregard the natural law and make a mockery of those who've lived full short lives he would be rightfully pissed.
Was thinking the same thing. Loved the way he accentuated certain words.
If you didn’t know, he actually died 9 times

@@TheOfficialTwo i think one was only in the trailer so its not canon
When death said “and you didn’t value ANY of them” with such resentment.. it was chilling fr. Makes u think about ur life too. Deaths motives are written perfectly, the fact that he’s so angry about the multiple lives and not having valued a single one goes so well with the message of the story. It’s hard not to love the way the film is woven together seamlessly.
The way he says “I find the very idea of nine lives.. ABSURD” he sounds legitimately angry. Such a good movie
When Death said that to Puss, he was right. Puss was so overconfident in his battles and adventures that he never really cared if he died due to his nine lives. But Puss learns his lesson in the end as he stands up to Death by showing know signs of fear and deciding to truly value the one life he has.

I think what makes death such a cool character is that he’s taken seriously. We need more villains, animated or not, to be depicted this way
The way this film took the abstract and figurative concept of death and made it into a literal, tangible entity with consequences unavoidable is amazing. It's a testament to the power and passion that can be found in animated films.
And did it without going with tired tropes as well
Discworld's Death would swap drinks and stories with Lobo. After all, Discworld's Death had a similar vendetta against Rincewind... for a time.

@@Gdb987he’s not Mexican, he’s Spanish.
Even if Death claims he is not a metaphor or a symbol, but straight up Death itself. The whole message of the movie works wonderfully metaphorically. Puss, blessed by many lives, was cocky and arrogant, simply because death was not a big deal for him. But at every single new life, he literally came closer and closer to Death. By ignoring Death, and playing around with it, he became extremely close to it. And for once in his whole life he had to not take things as granted, learning that's how you actually beat Death; by enjoying every second of your life.
Nice analyzation.
Well anytime Death is depicted with a body in any story he becomes metaphorical by default, so by stating that he's not metaphorical death he reverts back to Death: The Force of Nature, the thing that cannot be escaped from nor defeated. Which is certainly important to the overall story because if he didn't state it, people might do silly things like theorize how Puss could have beaten Death or something.
real
This is an amazing interpretation.
"learning that's how you actually beat Death; by enjoying every second of your life." And for a moment here I thought you had learned the lesson of the movie. Pity.

On to the next page, while I've never personally watched this Movie, I found all I needed to know in just this one Video. How much effort and time was put into this movie to ensure an Accurate, Child-friendly yet Daring and paralyzing example of a Inter-Religious Figure such as Death is trully a testament to the skill that the Writers have for the Movie. The Coins for the Ferryman in the eyes, the 'Whistler*' Folklore, and a Signature Animal referenced as Death. It all seems flawless, and well put together to cross the boundaries to show a common narative for all Religions, and to help teach a fundamental to even an Adolescent mind; There will always be an end, and to make amends and live to the fullest. Death is an absolute. *In some folklore, (I am unsure which, I just remember hearing of it), to hear a Disembodied Whistle is to signify your time to death. Similar to that of a Banshee's scream. The Further the Whistle is, the Closer you are to your death and the Closer the Whistle, the Further you are from death
