Simple Spiny Peaks Quilt using 2 1/2 inch STRIPS! 10th in our series to use leftover strips!

Tenth project in a series using 2 1/2 inch strips to make scrappy quilts! This pattern was designed for a colorful jelly roll and a white jelly roll but leftover 2 1/2 inch strips in two different colors will work just as easily!
I chose a high contrast between the two colors. The hot pink and black together are bold and the finished quilt is striking! A subtle difference between the two colors would also be beautiful but more relaxed with a softer pattern.
Here is the link to the pattern used in the video, "Spiny Peaks," by Zen Chic for Moda. This pattern is one of the many Project Jelly Roll patterns they have available online for free!

Here is a link to our video series playlist featuring Projects using 2 1/2 inch strips:
• Projects using 2 1/2" ...
Stay to the end to see the finished quilt and see what the backing looks like! I also show what i did with my extra cut off pieces from the strip sets and the edge of the quilt! Don't throw away those extra bits! Make something out of them!
There is also an update on the 2 1/2 inch scrap bucket situation!
I've challenged myself to do a new project each month using only 2 1/2 inch strips from my scrap buckets. I have always saved leftover strips from projects and cut up small leftover fabric from yardage into 2 1/2 inch strips and put them in a bucket for some "future" project . The future is now! It is time to tame the scrap bucket and use up these strips. I'll always have a scrap bucket of strips because I'm constantly adding to it but I want to get it down to just ONE bucket instead of three...make that seven after the "GREAT SORTING"! This series will last until I'm down to one bucket. Let's be honest, it will take at least 2 years to use up enough strips to make a difference! So join me on this project adventure to use up fabric scraps!
If you don't have leftover strips from other projects to make scrappy quilts, cut up fabrics in your stash into 2 1/2" strips to make the project. No stash of fabric? Head to your local quilt shop and buy a jelly roll or some very pretty fabric to cut into strips! Shop owners are more than happy to help you find the perfect fabric, don't be shy, ask for help if you need it!
Consider joining our Facebook group called "The Quilted Forest Friends". This is the only place you'll have access to exclusive free quilt patterns used in some of our other video projects. It's also lots of fun for members to share their project updates. Here's a link to the group:

    • I agree with you! Two and a half inch strips can be the basis of many quilt designs. It gives you a strategy to cope with every kind of fabric design and color. As shown in the video, you can select a color scheme and be on your way to successful scrap style patchwork. Red, yellow and blue; patriotic colors, all pastels: there are lots of ways to unify scraps.

  • Your videos ALWAYS inspire me to do more!! We are kindred spirits on scraps! I always see potential in the bits of fabric. As a longarmer - most of my customers don't want the trim and tell me to toss. I do - right into my bins. i am chairperson for our QOV group. Folks are always donating scraps that I will press and subcut for our projects.😊

  • How fun! I can see a little 10 year old girl or a teen just loving this quilt! I like the way you organised your sewing, and plan to do the same. I'm glad I'm not the only one to make use of all the scraps! I put the tiniest ones in a big white milkglass bowl as I go, and thoroughly enjoy looking at the beautiful colors all together as I fill the bowl! It's a good way to see that I am also making progress. I don't use them as stuffing when the bowl is full, but I give them to a friend of mine does! She stuffs dog beds for the Friends of Pets Thrift Shop.
