  • My dog wears a muzzle when we walk bc he's dog reactive and my idiot neighbors let their dogs run off leash. He's a pittie and my job is to protect him at all costs.

    • If your dog is dog reactive, you are protecting other dogs from getting attacked. Let’s call it what it is. I’m a groomer and some dogs have to wear muzzles or they’ll bite my face off (literally). Muzzles are to protect others.

    • @@kristin4840 Well he's a pit and imagine an off leash dog running at his owner, he's gonna do what he needs to in order to protect me. So I'm protecting him from attacking another dog and being put to sleep bc of the irresponsibility of the other party.

  • I work at a pet hotel and daycare and a couple of dogs who come in come in wearing a muzzle, but they’re so friendly, it’s just triggers that cause their negative reactions. Before working there, I was fearful of dogs wearing muzzles, but after meeting dogs with muzzles where I currently work, I now know that they’re nothing to be frightened of

    • Indeed. Like we say in my country: When you see a dog with "bad behavior" look who holds the leash. If there is no leash, it is even more obvious that the owner is at fault. If a dog is not trained AND socialized properly, do not expect him/her to behave properly.

  • I adopted a 2yr old 129# St.Bernard/lab mix once. My kids were younger & we spent a lot of time @ the ⚾ fields. The 1st time I was gonna take him, I knew he had shown 0 aggression but @ the ballpark, you really don't have control over who's gonna pet him, hug him, etc... So I got him the basket muzzle & he even had a team 👕 on lol. I got so many rude looks from adults & kept having to repeat "He's a new rescue. Better safe than sorry" & of course his big ol' bushy tail was wagging. He did fine & the 3rd game we went w/o the muzzle. Had 9 great yrs w/Denver! He was a loving dufus who couldn't swim lol. We taught him how since we have 2 rivers thru our town. Rest in Peace ya big ol boy!🐾

    • Great, but that's for a situation like a groomer where the dog won't and can't be hurt so it doesn't *need* to defend itself. Contrast: Some random aggressive dog runs up and your dog cannot defend itself.

  • I love dogs, but some of them must wear a muzzle. I was waking in the park recently and I stumbled upon two girls with their dogs. One of them was a large pit bull. I knew right away that he saw me as a threat, I don't know why. He was tied to a bench, but his leash was pretty long. So, as soon as he saw me approach the girls (they were in the way, and I was just walking in their direction), he charged me. I managed to walk backwards just in time before he bit me, but it was a close call. Bottom line is, if you know your dog has certain reactions, he must be muzzled, for his own sake (because he could be put down) and for other people's sake.

It’s just like two to tango, you need to work your relationship with a dog, so before anyone gets a dog, you gotta be mentally, emotionally prepared and not just give the dog up because they were “too difficult.” (But there are exceptions of course.)

  • Thanks Chris! I never knew this about muzzle training. I always thought they wore them because it was pretty much required because of the breed. Not required by the owner but because of some obscure dog laws. My Sammy, a Velcro Terrier, is not reactive which is great. We've never been in a dog park, but I took her outside of one. She needed to make a poo break since we had been out running errands. I took her up to the fence and the dogs all came over to check her out. She barely acknowledged them. But, she does love playing with other dogs.

  • Greyhounds that have had any training, whether or not they raced, are legally required to be muzzled if off the lead (in the UK - I recommend it everywhere). Racing muzzles are very lightweight and they're used to them. It keeps them safe just in case their millennia of breeding kicks in if they see something small and furry running away. Even if they can catch whatever it is, they can't bite it. If they do bite they can kill, and that can end up with them being put down (if it's someone's animal) - just for following their human-endowed instincts. We are on our 8th hound, who is the best friend of every dog and human in our village, and pretty much anywhere he goes. He's so soft and silly. And he's not allowed off the leash. We do have muzzles around should we know we're going into a cat-heavy situation. We've had a few hounds who'd definitely go after one. I lost my soulmate when she decided, as an arthritic 12 year-old who should have known better, to go after a rabbit while still on the lead, pulling my husband over in a heavily-rutted field and damned near choking our other 2 hounds. She caught her leg in a hole and broke it so badly that it couldn't be fixed. It was a back leg, her hips were arthritic, and amputation was not an option. This was 30 years ago and I still miss her every day. Writing this now is making me tear up. Again. I mention her now because she used to be a lot less inclined to chase if she was muzzled, but also because had that been a cat and she was on good ground, we could have had a lot of painful explanation to do and could have lost her anyway. So please don't pay attention to other people and their attitudes, protect your friend from their instincts if you know - even if it's deep down - that they'll get into serious trouble if they slip the leash. I admire the lady in the video. She's doing absolutely everything right for her beautiful boy.

  • Yes! Muzzle training is, I’d say, an essential tool to have for yourself and your dog. Whether your dog is reactive or not it should still know what a muzzle is and be comfortable with wearing one. :) One good example I always like to put out is in case of a medical emergency. Your dog may know you, but when in pain all sense of who is who can be lost. So instead of warranting a vet to the ER yourself, you can muzzle your dog while you care for it. This is so great to see! Thank you for sharing this!

  • My dog came from an extremely abusive situation and goes into an immediate aggressive reactive state if he must be held still.... like at a vet. I am working on training him to be okay with a muzzle, (right now we build the cone around him at the vets office.) And when he gets the the point where it can be on his face, we are going to have to do a lot of fun activities with it on. Things like walking him around my apartment complex, where people usually see him without a muzzle, are going to cause some questions. Sometimes I feel like I should print out pamphlets with his story. 😂
