  • I keep saying this, but indie developers are literally the future of keeping 3D platformers alive. Please support them instead of begging studios like Rare or Naughty Dog to make new Banjo or Jak games. They clearly aren't interested, and we're wasting our energy, hoping they do when we could go support games like Penny's Big Breakaway or Rollin Rascal.

    • Indie games keep most of gaming alive, not afraid to try something new, think outside the box,and because they don’t have the money to go for super realistic graphics, they go for a more stylised look which ultimately makes it look better and more fresh. I feel like lots of triple a games have a formula behind them and don’t want to do anything different because they risk some game critic who isn’t even their target audience may be thinking the game is bad. Games are still good this way but they just can’t get better or evolve this way

    • this will be even more true once the hard working lead artists from older chains pass away, there will no longer be a market for new games 25 years from now. Unless indie devs are the primary partners for console manufacturers 12-25 years for now, then we might see progress. Toys For Bob does need to work on Rare Remaster of DK64 and C.O.D. for Switch & Switch 2. Could we get outfits and skins from other games for our flamethrowers, characters, and banners?

  • What pisses me off the most is that they are just... not making them! Every time a big AAA platformer comes out is a banger and does great but because Crash 4 did sell 17mil in a day, everyone aside from Nintendo/Sega gave up. Now in the Indie world we are big chilling with stuff like Spark, a hat in time, rollin rascal and Penny but those games sadly don't affect the industry as a whole :/

    • Sales should not matter as long as fans are happy. It feels like these developers are making up excuses.

      @amygeer2217@amygeer22173 ай бұрын
    • @@amygeer2217 huh? Sales are what makes games get made. I'd love to live in a world where developers made all the games I wanted specifically, but that's not really how it works. Sales indicate player interest, so of course companies make games and sequels in series that sell well. While it is definitely about the money, that's what big sales numbers indicate: happy fans! You can't make every fan happy since as a business they have to make positive investments and there's literally no way to please everyone. They have to compromise, pick and choose what to and what to not greenlight. Now, a lot of the big companies like PlayStation and Microsoft have the funds to pump out all kinds of experimental stuff without really losing a lot of money, but big companies like that have so much going on under the hood that we can't really see the full picture. That's a whole other conversation, so I'm not even gonna try to explain that. But the main thing that irked me here was that you blamed the developers. Please, don't blame the devs. They just make whatever they're greenlit to create and that's that. Unless you're on a super prestigious team like the big 3D Mario team or Zelda team, you don't get to choose what you make. If you take away ANYTHING from this, remember that it's pretty much never the devs who are to blame. It's the higher-ups that put on the money, time, and creativity constraints.

  • It's really upsetting how platformers, 3D platformers esseptailly, aren't really respected or cared for in the modern gaming landscape. People usually go towards shooters or multiplayer games that involve little to no platforming elements and as of right now the only sucessful major 3D platformers we got on the market consitantly is Mario and Sonic. I just feel the genre has so much potential that a lot of studios arent taking advantage of cause of the declining popularity of the genre. Sure it may not be the 2000s anymore but that doesnt mean we should abandon 3D platformers as a whole. we need to give Mario and Sonic some help their backs must be hurting from all the carrying theyre doing lol.

  • It is a pretty sad state that 3D platformers are in when we only have three major AAA platformers, and Kirby only recently got his first 3D platformer. Aside from them, it's pretty much just the indie scene keeping 3D platformers alive and while they provide great games, I wish we didn't have to rely solely on the indies for 3D platformers aside from Nintendo and SEGA.

It hurts me mainly for Crash and Klonoa, I love these series despite despite playing only the recent games it sucks that they keep bringing back these platformers and just dispose of them immediately just because they aren’t making the molah other game genres are making. Granted, these games are always licensed; the last original Lego game was Ninjago in 2017, and I'd love to see their IPs like Bionicle get a modern game one day. Either way, Lego's still got it

  • I completely agree. Platformers are my favorite game genre (always have been), and it just kind of hurts to see how much more scarce they've become in recent years. Games like Banjo-Kazooie and Jak & Daxter mean *so* much to me, and I really hope we can eventually return to a point where these games are thriving once again. And as far as icons like Rayman being kind of dead or in limbo... I'd actually also include DK/DKC in that. It's legit been a decade now since Tropical Freeze, with no real signs (beyond just rumors) of a new game happening anytime soon. And that really sucks. I hope we hear about a new game soon. But, yeah. Like you said, it feels like the genre is barely holding on outside of Mario, Sonic, and (more recently) Kirby. I just want to see more. It deserves to be more.

Hopefully an Xbox studio like Toys for Bob can make a new Banjo like they did for Spyro and Crash. The main creative head at Toys For Bob, Paul Yan, has said if he had the chance to make a new title for Banjo he would.

  • I think the current state of 3D platformers is due to the current state of the industry as a whole. A good chunk of companies now have the mindset of "Go big or go home" and while usually that's fine, the bad part is it's for EVERY. SINGLE. GAME. Every game is now required to be the next BOTW or the next Mario 64. It has to revolutionise the industry, it needs to have a budget of 150 million dollars MINIMUM, file sizes are off the charts (There is NO reason for FF7 Rebirth or COD to be hundreds of gigabytes), etc. Companies don't realise people just want a good 3D platformer to chill out with and have fun, we don't care if it's revolutionary, as long as it's good and not another Sonic Forces or Balan Wonderworld Mario Odyssey and Kirby & The Forgotten Land are such beloved titles and considered must-haves for the switch, but they aren't revolutionary. They're just really fun games and that's all they need to be.

It was in the top 10 of the Switch eShop's best sellers list the week it came out, and they recently did a survey gauging interest for more Pac-Man World games. The fact they're even considering doing more means it has to have done well. At the very least, Re-Pac seems to be the best-selling Pac-Man game since Championship Edition DX back in 2010.

  • I've always been of the general notion that 3D platformers are what carry gaming. They're very fun replayable, and never really get stale (at least if they're good). They also have so much accessibilty since they aren't as complex as other genres. I've always loved and preferred 3D platformers, and I would love to actually make one too. Indie games have really sparked an inspiration in me to see other IPs and platformers through to fulfillment. I'll always have a deep love for games like Mega Man, Spyro, Crash, Pac-Man and other IPs, but they all seem so... dead. It's kinda depressing... (Also, I know they aren't 3D platformers, but since we're on the topic of indie games, I think everyone should go play Heart&Slash and Owlboy, both of which came out pretty long ago. They have different tones and playstyles, but I think they have so much potential. Especially if you like Sonic or Mega man, I would highly recommend Heart&Slash, it's got the story and edge of those series)

  • I got a real good feeling Spyro at the very least'll be coming back soon, 2024's the Year of the Dragon and their social media accounts have been oddly active lately, way more than normal at least, not to mention putting him and some other Spyro characters in Crash Team Rumble (for whatever that's worth lmao). I feel like we're not too far off another 3D renaissance though, here's hoping

    • @lemon5000-tj6nv Nah I get that, I'm probably too optimistic and will be let down again lmao. My way of thinking is maybe they initially wanted to announce it then but the Activision buyout and management shifting delayed some things a little, not to mention how long it took from Rumble getting leaked to actually releasing as well, could just be a long development and they dont wanna announce things early just in case. I'm holding out my last hope for Summer Games Fest though, if it's not there, then it's depression time

  • What you said at the end is exactly my thought. I don’t get why these big publishers feel like sales need to be in the high millions to be considered a success. I don’t understand the whole picture, but it just feels that games are getting so expensive to produce or people at the top of these publishers are taking in too much profit that their expectations just grow to absurd levels. If a niche platformer returns and sells a million with no marketing, that should be celebrated. It’s such a shame that the genre has fallen off in the non-indie scene.

  • 3d Platform games are like other genres I love like 3d fighting games (Not just Tekken or anime Arena fighters), Hack n Slash/ character action games, and heck even 3D beat em up. You'll always have the popular series but I feel like we see less and less of those genres in AAA games and heck even the Indie scene because sadly it's all about what's gonna make the most money and not about trying something different or even smaller now.

They ported it once on the PS3 and that was it when those 3 games are beloved and were ahead of it's time...instead we have this generic killmonger unnamed looking guard that's supposed to "save" the prince like he's some damsel in distress smh. Then again they can't even treat Rayman right so my hope is lost for these games to be revived...

  • Y'know, horror and point and click adventure style games were in a similar boat not TOO long ago, Amnesia: The Dark Descent came out in 2010 and sort of revitalized the genre, in large part thanks to Let's Plays becoming a big thing around the same time. Point and click adventure games had a big resurgence thanks to a bunch of dedicated fans of the genre seeing the huge gap deciding to make their own. It might not take shape the same way with 3D platformers, but videos and discussion like this can only help. WIthin the last few years, we're already seeing a minor resurgence in the indie scene, more 3D platformers are coming out now than they have in decades. I know that's like, 10 games, but the genre really was THAT dead. Keep being vocal about the genre and who knows, it might inspire more indie devs to take their own shots at it, and we know how the mainstream gaming industry likes to chase trends.

  • Recently been putting a lot of thought into this. Especially on the PlayStation front, and the platformer series they own. Because they're literally sitting on a goldmine of IP's that they just don't intend to use. As you said, Sly Cooper. People have been begging for a Sly 5 for 11-years. Tho Jak & Daxter are getting a movie, so there's some hope for that series. Hyped (after seeing the leaks) for the next Ratchet tho! But it's also the experimental Sony IP's, that technically aren't platformers that seem to get neglected too. Stuff like MediEvil, which got a remake...then nothing else. And Gravity Rush, which leaves itself open for a 3rd game, despite the ending feeling definitive. But likely won't happen because Sony shut down Japan Studio, tho they are making a movie for that too. And instead defaulting to "realistic, console pushing, movie-level graphics" game every time we turn around. Because they sell WAY better than anything else that has a standout style, which Nintendo's IP's (being the polar opposite) excel at! Not saying realistic games are bad, cuz I enjoy Horizon, Spidey & Uncharted. But when you have so much of that put together, it seems like there isn't much variety in genres. Which is something the PS1, all the way to early PS4, had in spades! With A Hat in Time & SpongeBob: Cosmic Shake fitting right in with! I don't know, to me there appears to be an imbalance between sylized, cartoony games & the cinema-esque type of games from some of the big names in the industry. And I wish it could level out a bit.

  • As someone who grew up during the Golden age of 3D gaming, there's something heartbreaking about watching such a beloved gaming medium fade into obscurity. Mario still makes quality 3D Platformers, but they only come out only other Blue Moon. And Sonic hasn't had a FULLY 3D Platformer since Sonic 06 (Holy crap it's been over 18 years: send help), which is sad😢 Thank goodness for the Indie scene, otherwise I bet people would have forgotten about 3D Platformers

  • It just really sucks. Platformers as a genre just went from the top of the pile to something that's honestly kinda niche these days. But platformers CAN thrive. Even outside of the constants like Mario like there's POTENTIAL here. Maybe they won't sell as much as the big "AAAA" games but they don't need to, and they don't need to be big budget projects either. And the indie scene is basically keeping blood pumping in the genre at all. It really felt like we were starting to see a 2nd Renaissance for the genre. It still does (I mean christ even GEX is coming back in some form) and I hope and pray that doesn't get cut short

I may not care for every platformer series out there but just seeing very few options left is genuinely depressing when this genre use to thrive for the past few decades.

I mean I’ve never met anyone who has played a 3D platformer on an Xbox or PlayStation since the PS2 and original Xbox. I’d say the only platform that holds a candle to the switch in terms of playing Indie games and smaller less popular forms of games like 3D platformers is PC Gaming.
