Propshaft PTO - 4x4 Off-Road UTV Build Ep.12

2020 ж. 3 Жел.
4 706 855 Рет қаралды

In this video I'm fabricating a PTO (power take-off) shaft so I can build a trailer for this UTV that also has drive. By connecting the UTV propshaft to identical differential and identical wheels on the trailer, it too will have the same speed as the UTV. The usual problem while towing a trailer is that the towing vehicle is too light (or the load being hauled is too heavy :D ) and it starts to skid around. By building a dedicated PTO for a driving trailer I don't have to worry about spinning the wheels anymore in the mud because the trailer is also driving / hauling. I'm also looking for ways to connect the driveshafts of BMW and Peugeot together since the wheel hubs are from a Peugeot and these have to be connected to the BMW E39 differential.
This is part of a series of a four wheel drive utility vehicle build to lessen the work load on my trusty 2002 Honda Foreman Rubicon TRX500FA. This partially answers the question "Why?" but for those who want to ask "why don't you just buy a side-by-side instead of building one?" I just want to say - I'm not made of money. Side-by-sides are ridiculously expensive, even the car I drive around daily is worth less (not worthless though!), hell, it is even worth less than my 2002 Honda ATV.
"How much HP will it have?" - the 1.4 litre FWD petrol engine I'm planning on using has 55 kw and this will not change, but the torque will be tripled via the BMW differentials I'm using to transfer power to front and rear axles.
"It will be too heavy!" - this project just like the firewood processor project does not have to float. And a heavier vehicle will handle better anyway when hauling heavy loads.
Stay tuned for future episodes! Thanks for watching!

    @horstszibulski19@horstszibulski193 жыл бұрын
    • Driven trailers are great, but create bit of a issue specially in heavier equipment, where if you have vehicle it self spilling badly and put power to trailers drive train that holds, there is possibility of it breaking something if that is not over built to handle such forces IE you are putting all of the combined weight and power of the engine into one axle. Also gear ratio needs to be considered when building such construction. Have a rear axle from different ratio than the front and you will break weakest link. In this case i dont think it is big issue since his using car parts on UTV, but its pretty close safety margins with all that weight, specially if trailer is loaded with dirt or such heavy load.

  • I,m subscribed and watch all of your vids. back in the day, my aircraft instructor taught us, never put bolts in head down, or in the case of a vehicle , head backward. If the nut vibrates loose in a head down position, ( or head backward), the bolt falls off (or out). That generally results in system failure. Sometimes catastrophicaly.

  • Would the shafts still be strong enough if you just fitted a sleeve over the joint and welded the sleeve to the two solid shafts? You could even weld the shafts together with a butt weld first, then grind the weld smooth and slide the sleeve over it and weld it too (assuming you remember to put the sleeve on before welding) I'm sure you have probably already figured it out by now though. Love this series, thanks again :)
