Hoping also to make friends and speak the language with them 😊🙌🏻❤️

    • Hi Makrina I agree Turkish sounds beautiful and polite. I am also trying to learn Turkish, one of the reasons is so that I can be able to watch Turkish TV series without relying on English subtitles. There are some TV series available on KZhead with English subtitles available, while there are other Turkish TV series where the first episode or first few, or first 8 - 10 episodes have English subtitles and then the subtitles stop. I live in New Zealand (by the way).

  • When she says explosive / non-explosive, those familiar with linguist jargon will recognize the distinction as unvoiced vs voiced (as opposed to fricative / plosive, which "explosive" may lead one to think)

    @gwho@gwho3 жыл бұрын
    • Great point. Thank you for the useful addition. However, based on my experience with learners for over 10 years, the word "explosive" resonated the most with learners. What matters to me more is they learn the rule and make sense of it to speak the language than learn all the phonetic variations and the linguistic terms associated with the sounds. So, I have developed my own tool box of "terms" over the years.

  • Hi Muki, thank you so much for the lovely lessons!! Your explanation is always much easier to understand compare to other teachers. I have a question - Why is it the closest sound of "D" is "T"( as Dan changed to Tan for the word "SINIF")? is it according to the alphabets..? this is the only thing I can't figure it out for this lesson. Also am wondering, if we are not using "DAn" as an example, then the four options ( dan, den or tan, ten) will be changed totally according to the word that is being used, right? ... Thank you!! Greeting from Australia

    @leiwang364@leiwang3643 жыл бұрын
    • Merhaba Lei, cok tesekkurler. Avusturalya'ya selamlar. Thank you for the nice words and the question. "T" is the closest sound to "d," that's the first reason. When a word ends with one of the following consonants (f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h, p), it is easier to continue with "t" than "d" as it is produced similarly to the aforementioned consonants. Think of it as what fits best or what harmonizes best as you speak the language. As a beginner, it is more of an effortful way to do it but once you make more progress in Turkish, you will develop an ear for it and realize changing the "d" to "t" sounds more natural in those instances I mentioned above and in the video. Finally, learn the rule but don't lose sight of getting the message across. That means, as long as you use the correct suffix, if it sounds a little off people will still understand you and that's more important.

  • It would be way easier if you explained them on the basis of voiced and voiceless consonants. It really does not matter how explosive or fricattive they are, but their grouping in voiced and voiceless will determine the changes in the letters before them. At least that is what I observed. Like sınıf. F is a voiceless consonant, which is why the voiced -d in the suffix changes into its voiceless counterpart, -t. And it becomes sınıftan.

    @sl0523@sl05233 жыл бұрын

  • I have a question about t-, why we use "parti-den" gidiyorum, Saat "altıda". If according to rules, we have to look at "T"?

    @ninoshi8355@ninoshi83554 жыл бұрын
    • Excellent question. A lot of students initially think that way. Now, you are about to learn this topic for good! Ready? Consonant harmony only deals with cases where THE LAST SOUND IS A CONSONANT and the suffix that takes the consonant harmony STARTS WITH a consonant as well. For example, ofis-ten If the word ends with a vowel, then you don't worry about the consonant harmony. As far as 4-Way Vowel Harmony goes, you always look at the last vowel of the word. Sometimes the last vowel is not the last letter you see in the word. Regardless of the position, you always look at the last vowel of the word to decide how the vowel in the suffix will change and harmonize.

    @javeriasheikh4914@javeriasheikh49143 жыл бұрын
    • In Turkish there are a few exeptions , Kalten is one of them. Also, Kalp comes from Arabic, words taken from other languages have a slightly higher chance to be an exeption for the rules of Turkish.
