A statement from the director of "Lucy's Tale", Chelsea Lupkin: Lucy's Tale is a female led, coming-of-age story with a horror twist. Paying homage to Stephen King’s Carrie and dark female coming-of-age films like, Heathers and Jawbreaker, Lucy’s Tale is sure to remind you of the horrors of growing up and the body insecurity that goes along with it. A suspenseful story about a girl who no doubt wishes to grow bigger boobs, finds herself growing something else and no amount of acne cream or blemish removal can help her. So while Lucy just wants to come into her womanhood, she ultimately comes into her villainhood. The film follows a teenager named Lucy as she tries to find her place in high school after one of her best friends abandons her for “cooler” people. Lucy’s Tale is a story that dives into the complexities of mean girls and their consequences. For Lucy, her sense of betrayal and new-found outcast status serve as a catalyst for the film’s supernatural happenings. What should have been a time to grow into her sexual identity and womanhood, instead gives birth to telekinetic powers with a hideous physical side effect. A far cry from a final girls horror film, Lucy’s Tale is a film about growing up and becoming the person she was meant to be: good or bad. Whether you like it or not, you’ll be rooting for her the whole time. In an interview on Close-up Culture Lupkin says, “When girls hit puberty, there’s a whole mess of confusing things to worry about: We get our period, our boobs get bigger, our hips get wider, we get too tall or not tall enough. We suddenly worry about what we look like to boys and how we are perceived by our peers. When writing Lucy’s Tale, I explored the societal pressures of looking and behaving a certain way and thought of them as rules that my character should break in a fantastical way. So while Lucy was faced with entering her womanhood, she was ultimately also coming into her villain-hood, being supernaturally different than the other girls her age. Frankly, I’ve always been a champion of fantastic stories, especially those about characters who had physical manifestations of their flaws or internal state of being. Body horror gave me an avenue to tackle the very real and relatable issue of puberty, which is a horror in and of itself.”

Ms. Lupkin I was confused by the ending. Was her face on Fred's phone screen because he was intent to compromise her to the other wretched teenage girls and going to record their sexual tryst or being 70 years old my eyes failed me, or my mind simply didn't comprehend what it implied? And pray tell how did she kill him if she was responsible for it? I'm not sure they completed the act of coitus since it was so brief, or perhaps mere penetration of Lucy was responsible for his demise. Also since a wagging tail in a dog indicates contentment did the wagging of her tail afterward while in the car indicate she was gleeful with Fred's demise? Although I was a teenager in the sixties I'm still not so far removed from the angst of that time of life that I am totally out of touch with it. Her telekinesis obviously seems, or I assume, means she was able to cause bodily harm through mind power and somehow killed Fred after he felt her prehensile tail. I suppose it might be implying she is a spawn of the "Nether Regions" if you believe in devils. Beyond my mental infirmary about all those inquiries I thought it was a well done little cinematic tale and no doubt very much relatable to teen age girls these days, and in fact relatable to young teenage women during any period in time. It was well acted and the mean girls were particularly dislikabe and Lucy a sympathetic character though one could well perceive she is going to grow increasingly problematic in the future to those who piss her off.
So I thought this little excerpt was going to explain what it was. Is Lucy becoming "Lucifer" hence her name and the growing tail and her powers? Idk it was still a good short though, I'd love to see a continuation of the story.
You're right, I did end up rooting for her and now I want to see more of her story. It would be entertaining to watch as it takes her over, but also as she learns to control it and once in control, will she use it for good or evil ? Based on her personality , I think she would use it against bad people ( not always fatal ) but innocent people would have nothing to fear from her ! Ultimately I can see her becoming a kind of hero ! ( a Dark Hero perhaps ) This story could turn into a cult classic !

That statement just shows the "mean" girl's insecurities as well, and how she's compensating for them by attacking the thing that reminds her most of her prepubescent self, that "12 year old boy" body. It's a vicious cycle, girls against girls, because we've been broken down by society to believe we should fit a certain template or mold that we should be willing to give our body and sanity to become that unattainable photoshopped airbrushed image. Add in the confusion of puberty and the fear of talking about that confusion at that age, because its embarrassing or you think you're a "freak" and it becomes a horror movie in and of itself.

I would love to see this one as a whole evening movie. So much potential, opened questions, the struggle could be built up longer and deeper.. it could be even an origin story for a real villain and create a hero who she can fight against..
I think her telekinesis somehow predicted before .Lucy later checks brads phone and finds that brad is already with someone and is probably just using Lucy for intimacy. What I mean is that it can sense betrayal or evil before it’s even happened. Cause that’s the only way I can possibly think on how brad dies.

this one is very interesting, alter. my theory is that her tail manipulates her somehow, makes her think she's in control and hurts who hurts her, so when she wishes someone bad, it happens, she became to believe she's powerful, but the consequence is obviously, her tail growing. when it fully grows, it will do its job by itself, her wishing it to happen or not, it's kind of symbiotic, evil will come to anyone who harms her. that's how i would explain the ending, he died after they had sex, and when the call comes, she laughs to then cry, like she knows he must have planned something with the other girl, the tail knows she was played and did its work by itself without her even realizing what was going on edit: 1k likes omg thanks for all your kind comments. and yeah i'm exol! stan exo, stan kings!

ALTER, many of us older viewers don’t have much contact with youth culture (especially not youth dating culture). We want to learn more, but we don’t inherently know it. Please, in the future, consider providing explanations for age specific cultural references. I had no idea what the big deal was with the phone call at the end. I just assumed Bethany and he were friends so what was the big deal? I didn’t know that it is now understood in our society that this means that he was cheating on her. So, pretty please consider putting explanations of these youth culture social norms under the description. I’m sure I’m not the only over 40 year-old who doesn’t get these references. Thank you
It's not 100% explained that Brad was cheating on Lucy with Bethany - that's just one interpretation. But it is shown that Bethany and Lucy are very jealous with each other. Thus, that phone call at the end gave Lucy the satisfaction that Bethany could never have Brad. However, it also meant Lucy can never have Brad. Which is why she cries, then laughes, then begins to cry again. Yet the tail is wagging, so ultimately, it seems like Lucy or her subconscious think it's a good thing.

I found this in my recommendation list after about two years again and had to re-watch it as it is an extremely good short. I especially like that it is something different, like in old 80s horror movies where extra limbs where sometimes features. Nice one! AND the lead actress is incredible, very natural and believable! All other actors are very good too, very realistic and believable short. There SHOULD be a part 2 if I might add...

There's actually a movie called Ginger Snaps where the one girl grows a tale & becomes a werewolf. Another nod to Stephen King. He seems to be an enormous inspiration for a Lot of these film makers. 😍😍

Teenage years doesn't last forever but our experiences during these times are so crucial for character building. It's difficult to be in Lucy's shoes. She has more haters than supporters.

@@ChelseaLupkin thanks I love interpreting the unknown or variables of life and circumstances. I think like they said it's a different take on carrie, carrie represented a tortured soul who gave in to her fears and self desire and this is a twist on it in a more demonic aspect.
@@TriscoG The TV showing Carrie scenes were a bit much though. Too much on the nose IMHO. The idea behind putting easter eggs and references in your film is that it should be some kind of secret that some would find nice to have discovered. If you make it too obvious it takes away from the "joy" of discovering something like that. Showing any kind of gory scene would have been okay, since it foreshadows what was going to happen later on in the short.

I think that boy made the deal with her ex-bestfriend, idk, maybe to make a fool of Lucy or they conspired so the boy could take advantage of Lucy (because he knew she was entirely smitten of him). So "the tail" actually reacts to whoever might hurt Lucy. Because the boy had an evil plan, "the tail" killed him without Lucy's consciousness. Lucy laughed then was crying towards the end is bcs she realized that her ex-bestfriend (Bethany) suddenly called the boy (Brad), idk maybe to make sure that their plan was going smoothly. We could see that the phone she was holding was different than the one she held in the scenes before (when Lucy texted Brad, her phone has a rainbow-themed phonecast. Lucy was so disappointed and angry, to think that Brad conspired with Bethany to ruin her life. But "the tail" already took care of Brad, so i guess Lucy and "the tail" were planning something to do with Bethany too later.

The real horror is that the mother didn't care why her daughter had that reaction and reacted as if she was a teenager, too
OK but the brad died scene is really terrifying and very lively..😨
fun fact: the blood drops we put in his eyes for that scene stung quite a bit for the actor - he was a real trooper for keeping his eyes open long enough for the effect.
