  • I met Rik in a Pret a Manger on Oxford St London in 2011. I noticed him stood behind me in the queue. As a kid I’d watched The Young Ones repeatedly along with Mr Jolly, 5 Go Mad, Bad News and so on. He was my comic hero. I knew he probably didn’t want a conversation with a strange 30 y/o man so I simply said “Hello Rik I’m not going to hassle or bore you but I’d just like to say it’s an honor to meet you in person and from the bottom of heart, thank you.” He looked me in the eye, smiled, clicked his heels together like a Nazi and performed a very theatrical bow. He didn’t say a word. I paid for my sandwich and left. RIP Rik, you are missed.

    • That first scene is amazing because Blackadder actually outwits him and Flash knows it, and ups the ante by just knocking him cold. It's completely in character for both men and a testament to the writers and actors. Brilliantly done.

The next day everyone in school would be talking about what happened and endlessly quoting the more famous funny lines. And then there’s those really special couple of episodes, where the hero of ‘The Young Ones’ returned to our lives again briefly and we all got to piss our pants once again at his madcap antics. King of misrule, one of a kind❤️👏🏻

    • That’s the scene where Flash sagely advises “always treat your kite like you treat your woman” then swings his swagger stick as if to hit someone before declaring “get inside five times a day and take her to heaven and back”. Call me cynical (or far worse) but I suspect the omission of such material sadly wasn’t mere oversight. Certainly not in the current year. Hope I’m wrong. ;)

  • I'm a yank. I'm really scratching my head, trying to think of an American parallel to this, to a character so over-the-top, so completely full of himself, yet also so endearing and not annoying. Maybe Robin Williams in a few episodes of Mork and Mindy, maybe, but that was his show, every line was written to set him up. I certainly can't think of anything in American comedic TV where a cameo performer swoops in and absolutely steals the scene with nothing but raw sexual energy and chutzpah.

  • I have watched and adored British sitcoms my whole life. Blackadder is easily one of the all time greatest sitcoms, and Rik Mayall - especially in Blackadder Goes Forth - could easily be the greatest guest star in the history of sitcoms. Just incredible, and one of the reasons he works so brilliantly is because he has a deadpan Rowan Atkinson in the same scenes. It is pure comedy magic.
