  • Came in to this video thinking it would just be the standard petrol bashing nonsense that 4wders have had on repeat for 30 years (assuming no change in tech the whole way) but was surprised how balanced it was. Well done guys.

  • In a modern 4wd, petrol for me. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to service, cheaper parts, fuel economy isnt as bad as the older ones also watch the numerous videos of people testing a y62 patrol against a l200 towing. One of the tests had the y62 use less fuel and could actuakly accelerate uphill vs a lc200 (depending on what type ur 4wd needs, 91 is usually cheaper than diesel anyway). Modern diesels are no better in water crossing with a million sensors, prone to so many problems with modern emission requirements dpf, ad blue etc.

  • I've owned numerous GQ patrols, with every factory engine variant. I even had one with a stroked 383 Chev conversion, which was an absolute tyre frying dedicated LPG guzzling monster. (Try and find LPG out in the middle of nowhere) Each have had their own pros and cons. But from now on on, I am sticking with my RB30 powered Patrol. The thing absolutely hammers with a new Holley carburettor and tune, and it is far more economical compared to all the other GQ's I've owned. In addition to that, I can repair any mechanical problem on the side of a track quickly and easily with a few basic tools and spares. Reliability is key, stay away from late model diesels. Just my 2 cents.

    • Yeah it is an interesting argument for sure. My BIL who does plenty of touring, including towing a camper trailer, and 4wding has owned a 60 & 80 series as well as the Nissan powered Patrol. He had an amazing run out of the Patrol but says that the twin cab Triton, about 2012 I think, is by far the best 4wd he has owned. Many of the old skool 4wd's are now getting very long in the tooth with many many hard k's on them and will eventually get impossible or at least prohibitively expensive to fix before much longer. I own a very late model turbo diesel and it is very capable in most regards. I don't door hard core or really remote stuff and I can't fix much of anything at all let alone a modern vehicle so it doesn't really matter in my case. I did a very thorough search of known issues on various vehicles and checked out owner reports before I bought one and I will turn it over before it has too many k's on it so time will tell if it was the right choice.

    • @@seanosgood3229 Depends surely on why it stopped? Could be a .50c fuse. The people I know who have bought petrols basically couldn't afford the fuel they used in everyday use and put them on gas which basically defeats the purpose. The usual argument is that diesels, whilst costing more to repair, will need repair much less often or will go much further before problems occur. Whether this is still the case with modern diesels is perhaps debatable but my brother has had 2 Pajeros now, uses them much harder than 99% of users and has never put a spanner on either of them other than scheduled servicing. The petrol Jeep he owned on the other hand......................................... A guy I work with also has a petrol Jeep and basically doesn't use it due to fuel costs. It is broken atm and it isn't worth repairing in his opinion. He is looking at a diesel Triton to replace it and a diesel Courier ute that has done many hundreds of thousands of k's with no problems.

    • @@oldbloke204 well thats where they stuffed up jeeps are renown for being lemons. The hilux/prado v6, lc v8's, y62 v8 and y61 tb48 have no known issues at all literally none and will all see 400kms without issue if looked after, as for there diesel counterparts well.... haha. As to fuel the petrols seem to use 3-4L to 100kms more so if someone averaged 500kms a week thats only 20L = $30 extra a week a cost which is easily negated by the extra loan repayments and servicing cost of buying a diesel (unless its a tb48 they are that bad)

      @tcmx712@tcmx7124 жыл бұрын
    • @@tcmx712 I'm very well aware of their reputations but I was referring to their fuel usage. I find it very hard to believe that the larger capacity petrol motors you are referring to use as little fuel as people say that they do. Bury the foot and they will drink it for sure. My brother has the 3.2lt Pajero Turbo Diesel and has done the same trips in a V8 Diesel 200 series and the difference in fuel usage is very marked indeed. I can only imagine how much a petrol would use. Capped price servicing as well as the long warranties that are around these days mean that there is not that much to spend on either for quite a few years. I will never borrow to buy a car so the only cost for me is opportunity cost on the money I spend. Petrols really aren't that flash in some areas due to hotter exhausts causing vehicles to burn. At the end of it all we can choose what we want to buy for whatever reason. They are all depreciating money pits whichever way you look at it so pick the one you like and go for it.

  • Depends on what you’re buying the vehicle for. I bought a 3.2D nw Pajero over a Prado purely on engine reliability. It’s got plenty of power and is good on fuel. 10L/100 average. 11.5L towing a 1+ton camper on the highway. If you want to compare 6cyl old live axle cruiser or 105series, 7k will get you an excellent condition low km one if you’re patient. As opposed to 20+k for a 1hz+t diesel with half a million km. 1hd-fte (best engine ever built)conversions are becoming more popular although quite expensive. So I really comes down to how much you wand to outlay initially as opposed to each week for fuel. You can buy a lot of fuel for the difference in purchase price. My two bob.

Takes 10l of oil, service is oil every 5000ks filters every 10,000ks. No turbo, returns about 13.5l/100kms city or hway. Even using high pressure cleaner under the bonnet starts first kick. Low tech injectors about $1000 a set fitted and last about 500000kms. Chassis is much stronger than new 4x4s. At 332000kms it'll be around long after the new stuff is on the tip! Other thing to consider is modern diesels seem to be going higher tech but smaller capacity. Means higher revs shorter life.

  • A couple other benefits to diesel is its low end torque which is great for crawling, another benefit is diesels high compression ratio which is really good for going down steep hills. petrols tend to run away on you and you have to go hard on the breaks.

    @Omar-iw7md@Omar-iw7md4 жыл бұрын
    • @David Leane I would say that's more of the exception then the rule. If you compare two similar cars/engines side by side the diesel will always win when it comes to engine braking. In this case I'd definitely argue that a diesel prado will have superior engine braking. I'm not saying that the petrols is rubbish just that the diesels is superior.

      @Omar-iw7md@Omar-iw7md4 жыл бұрын
    • My previous 4x4 was petrol. Always had to use the brakes even on moderate decent in low 1st. My diesel 4x4 however in low 1st on steep decent often has my accelerating a little because of how much compression braking it has. Plus, the high compression means a solid build that allows for a exhaust brake to be installed for additional compression braking. But I haven't found the need for that yet. If I was towing heavier trailers a lot, I'd install one and use it in the same way I do in trucks. It's because of this engine braking that I refuse to buy anything other then a diesel for offroad use. Your driving needs may be different and a petrol may suit better, but if you drive the High Country, go diesel.

  • Relevant to your cuzzies over the ditch in NZ. With Diesel road tax being distance base, and petrol tax being charged per litre, there is a substantial advantage to a diesel when you do anything that involves extra consumption, like towing, 4x4ing, or just own a thirsty rig. The break even tax point is about 10L/100km, so if you use any more than that then diesel pays less tax. Handy if you are offroading or towing a big load, where if your petty is using 25L/100km then you are paying 2.5x the road user tax that the diesel does. Different era of technology, but my 3.2D Gen 4 Paj uses less fuel than the 2L 4g63 petrol RVR, while moving almost twice the weight.

Only thing replaced outside of normal servicing, 1 x fuel rail at 195000 km, due to relief valve, common issue that should be part of the service routine. I would suggest you can’t go past original equipment when it comes to Nissan or Toyota. Every other brand is hit or miss.

  • Not sure why you started off talking about so called typical 4cylinder petrol and diesel 4wd but when doing the pros and cons you instead showed dinosaur 6 and 8 cylinder engines circa 4.2 to 4.5 litres. I own a 4cyl 2.4 Pajero Sport Auto. Whilst it's computer generated fuelcompuyations are sometimes close to reality they are often out by up to a whopping 15% when compared to actual fill ups in litres divided by the number of hundreds of km. Typically in urban driving with 5km stop starts to 80km stop starts my SUV averages 8.4 litres per 100km compared to the manufacturers claimed he l/100km. That's 5% more which is a significant amount to me especially because the mixture of driving I do has more of the 80km runs than the 5km ones. Now with towing . . . Most forums I have participated in claim fuel increases for towing massively higher for diesels than you say . . . And that I have experienced. I tow an 8.5 metre (overall length) Adria caravan with ensuite, separate shower room club lounge and permanent island oversize double bed. It has a full stove with grill and full size oven. It also has a 190 litre 2 door 3 way fridge freezer. It's Tare weight is 1400kg but it's ATM Is a significant 1700kg and despite its size, cuts through the air better than most Australian made Taj Mahal vans with the same features because it's frontal area is quite rounded and importantly it's single axle and chassis are low, reducing drag. A recent trip of over 3300km yielded a fuel consumption of 14.05 l/100km equating to 65% extra fuel. Whilst because of my sharing in various forums this is deemed to be a great result with most diesel towers using in excess of 20 litres compared to 9 litres not towing. I Can not vouch for the accuracy of what you say towing with a high revving 4cyl petrol of similar capacity might be but it's hard to imagine the penalty for towing with a petrol vehicle not exceeding my 65% difference when considering my vehicles torque (pulling power) is achieved with less revs, less piston metres of travel etc. Your arguments for diesel maintenance being higher I would not contest but whilst modern largish 2.4 litre petrol injected 4 cylinder engines subjected to the extra load of towing like I do I suspect will probably not survive 200000km without a total rebuild but I have knowledge of people getting more than 500,000km out of a Triton not towing but with a caravan like structure bolted onto it's cab chassis. So whilst I enjoyed subjectively the video the factual analysis seemed all over the place and the vehicles portrayed didn't seem to be the typical 4cylinder dual cabs or their wagon derivatives examples. As they say though . . . Never let the truth get in the way of a good story . . . Just kidding. Nest wishes Wayne from Encounter Bay SA

  • If you look at the land cruiser 200 (4.7L TT V8 diesel) factory test to be 9.5L per 100km and patrol y62 (5.6L N/A tuned V8), factory test to be 14.4L per 100km. But real world driving by everyone that says about it, both get from 13L to 18L, and the Patrol is often lower fuel use. Also, watch the water welding height, both petrol and diesel can get water in the filters, diesel will cost a lot to replace. Compared to the rest of the world, diesel and petrol is a lower quality, and getting dirty diesel and petrol can happen a lot. The good thing with petrol is it can take to some dirt or water through injectors, where diesel can't.

Petrol is more durable for offroading as it takes better to water, but does use a little more fuel. Manual always uses less fuel, and in my experience, manual is much better off road. In my opinion, Nissan Patrol is the better 4x4, Toyota LC200 and Prado are both quite good. A number of people out there go from a LC200 to a Y62, and they love the Y62 more.
