Schoolmaster Stories: Cloud & Finn

We get a lot of lovely comments about our schoolmasters - especially after videos like last week's, where the value of a good schoolmaster like Cloud is fully apparent.
We thought you'd like to hear a bit about them, so Barry has done a little talk about them our current Chief Schoolmaster Cloud and his understudy, Junior Schoolmaster Finn, whilst out on an exercise run to get fit for the upcoming training season.

    • @@barryhook2 hahaha! He must have been! Just trotting alongside Cloud like he'd done it before! Like he was saying, "Hey Cloud, wanna race, I'm faster than you! Hahaha!" Your English countryside is stunningly beautiful!! I live in the Pacific Northwest in Oregon, USA. I love watching your videos and seeing all the different types of vehicles and plants, shrubs, trees, roads, obstacles and signage of a different country. Whenever I've had a hard day, just listening to your knowledgeable voice and the horse's feet clip-clopping on the pavement is so soothing and peaceful. When I was a younger lady my 5 year old son and I had a pony cart and we'd drive all over the woods and desert in Central Oregon. You always bring me back to that peaceful time in my life. Thank you so much for that!! I really appreciate the hard work you and Rhys put into these horses and how you save them and keep them useful. Lots of people just throw horses away if they think they're done being useful or they've been ruined by bad behavior in people. I love all of the horses in your videos. Anyways, I just wanted to say thank you, and that I appreciate you 💖

  • Has cloudy got a moustache? And why is he pulling his head down constantly? Is it to pull silver towards him? Yes every cloud has a silver lining, and with you controlling the RAINS there’s sure to be a rainbow of hope for all horses on the horizon…. Well done cloudy for leaning into silver when he pushed away from that stationary lorry. What a bomb proof reliable incredible horse cloud is, to come back from his own trauma, and prop up so so many horses on the path to perfection. He deserves extra carrots.

    • Depends on the time of year! Sometimes he does, sometimes he rubs it off grazing or eating from his manger. Cloud has his quirks, as does any horse. If he thinks the other horse is moving their head around too much and interfering with his mouth, he will sometimes pull his head down like that. He can be asked not to haha Cloud is worth his weight in the gold at the end of the rainbow :) Finn will get there too with time and Cloud's help for sure.

  • Cloud is such a good boy, Baz!! Finn is going to make a marvelous schoolmaster in his own right when he's fully trained up. Being as big as he is, he'll be able to handle the bigger horses, and Cloud can do the middle to smaller horses. Or vice versa. Because as a schoolmaster, they have to be able to do all sizes really. But Finn is a stunning grey colour and seems to have a good head on him. How old is Finn, Baz? Your friend, the Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn 💖 🇨🇦

    • Finn will be 5 this year, Jenn! We think he was a late summer foal, looking at his teeth. We are hoping he will make it as a schoolmaster to share some of the load with Cloud.

    • I hope he does as well. That would help Cloud out immensely. You'd be able to give Cloud the odd day off and let Finn do the job that day. Wishing you all the best of good luck with this beautiful boy, Finn!! Your friend, the Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn 💖 🇨🇦

  • Hello! I'm new to the channel. I live in the United States, and I'm considering getting a former Amish crossbred horse, we believe he's a Belgian/Morgan or Belgian/Quarter horse. He's trained for both riding and driving. I have experience riding, but not much with driving, and I was wondering, as someone just starting out: what are things I should look out for with a new horse? What's the major difference between horses who are trained to driving for field work vs. pulling carts on the road? Aside from being more likely to upset over vehicles and such. I'd love to be able to drive him at some point, though I'll mostly have him for riding. He's older, around 14, and quite laid-back and good tempered. Also, I did see the pheasant. Lovely birds. We have them around where I live in Wisconsin, but they're not as common and much more shy. They were originally imported and farmed here, and the population is the result of escaped birds and farms that were shut down and the birds released. Thank you for your lovely videos! I'll be watching!

  • Hi, I like the way the Grey horse keeps his head up where it belongs. Also I'm wondering what the purpose of the cable is that is attached from the pole to the ring on the lines, I have never seen such a thing.

    @joe-ut9kb@joe-ut9kb2 ай бұрын
    • First, the black horse's head carriage is nearly perfect, the grey's is high because he is nervous. The black (Cloud) notices oncoming traffic, especially trucks, and tells the grey (Finn) that "it's ok". Second, the little 'cable' attached to the pole helps to keep the lines balanced between the horses, useful when one or both may be a bit flighty. Cloud is a superb teacher, especially considering his own experiences!

      @marilynbridges8697@marilynbridges86972 ай бұрын
    • Thanks, Marilyn! Yes, Finn is holding his head a bit high because he's been out in a field for six months and everything is a bit new to him again. The cable is actually a bungee cord and with horses that move their heads around a lot (such as Finn having a look at everything) the bungee helps stop the crossover of the reins getting caught over the front of the pole.

      @barryhook2@barryhook22 ай бұрын
  • Do you put Cloud on the right side of the pole?

    @PixHarvey@PixHarvey2 ай бұрын
    • Sometimes, but more often than not he works nearside. A young horse can get used to traffic quicker if they are closest to it and not 'hiding behind' Cloud. Also, if a young horse jumps away from a car, we are only at risk of ending up in a hedge. If a young horse jumps away from a gutter and Cloud doesn't manage to stop them entirely, we could end up in front of an oncoming vehicle, which would be much more dangerous. Before going single, every horse will work nearside, so that they have seen the gutter and are not afraid of it.

      @barryhook2@barryhook22 ай бұрын
  • Impressive recovery.... Cloud did his job/stayed steady....let that other horse see 'this too shall pass'.... Now - if he had been hitched single - i don't think it would have ended as well....🤔🥺 I imagine thats why you have him working in a team Barry Hook? It was hard to hear/understand the narration/backstory in the beginning...

    @barbelliott8289@barbelliott82892 ай бұрын
    • Yes, Finn had been living out for six months until the morning this video was taken, so he is out with Cloud for fitness building and to get used to things with a steady horse alongside him.
