  • Joe is a great interviewer because he knows how to shut up when a guest is telling an engaging story. A lesser interviewer would have continually interrupted and ruined the flow of the story.

    • That's not what makes a good interviewer. A good interviewer presses for truth and can get information from a story others can't due to their lines of questioning and tactics. Simply letting someone "tell an engaging story" is actually not an interview at all.

Shouldn't have been speaking out about Ukraine or keeping track of his political views in a diary or voice recorder and shouldn't have been talking to locals about sensitive news topics regarding Russia. You can't just go to another country and assume they have the same freedom of speech laws like we do in the West. You need to be aware of what not to say in countries with dictatorships or shambolic justice systems or else you're asking for trouble.

What about the atrocities that the Ukrainian military/Azov have been perpetrating for the last 8 years! All the rapes and massacres and bombing of civilians in a daily basis?! • Kudos to him for making it through that. A few years back I did a trans-mongolian trip that had me go from beijing to ulaanbaatar and then all the way to Moscow. Getting a visa for Russia is crazy enough, they ask you all these personal questions about family members histories and military service, but going in through train meant that I had to go through some random border check point in the middle of nowhere. A stark realization came to me as the three stout and very unhappy border agents in long grey trenchcoats and uniforms, like something out of an 80s movie, rifled through our bags, backpacks and even the compartment above our closet. They pulled out chewing gum and sternly demanded explanations. It was 2 am, I was in the middle of siberia, and I could be arrested for literally anything and NO ONE would know where I was. I didn't have cell service, no internet, no phone, save for the sporadic few moments I managed service passing through larger cities. It was a tense moment, but still an exciting trip. Russia is Russia. It's not the West. It's a unique place with a unique set of rules and many in the west can't comprehend the experience.

  • So he was in a Russian prison in 2022 and the Russians found a picture on his phone of him in Afghanistan, a photo they found suspicious. However Afghanistan was part of the 43,000 mile bike trip in 2010-2014 and he said earlier in the conversation he didn’t have a phone with him on that trip, he said iPhones weren’t on the market when he left, and the cell phone he had on that trip he chucked in a river. So how did a 10 year old Afghanistan photo from his 43,000 mile bike trip end up on his cell phone in 2022? Something is not adding up.

You can’t skip ads normally you have to like try to scroll thru them and half the time you come back to the podcast in a completely different spot than it was playing. It’s hard to fast forward and rewind without it messing up, there is no more live JRE episodes when they all used to be live, there are some obvious cuts which means they are editing it, and let’s not even get into the 200 episodes that are gone that we can’t watch anymore, i could go on for days. Try to imagine how this guy would look like, and how different his demeanor and body language would be if infact he WAS lying, i dont think it would be any different. The actions he describes could be considered very suspicious, and he downplayes exactly those suspicious actions. He paints the Russians as purpetraitors, but imagine; the Russians view the west as their enemy and in practice, they are. Not very surprising how the Russians act. The Americans would act exactly the same. He sounds like in fact he understands the Russian perspective, but he is deliberately ignorant while telling his story in order so that he infact HAS a story. This is my (ofc i can't be 100% sure) unbiased opinion. I just think it's interesting. If you think i am wrong in my reasoning, i am interested in hearing why you think so.
