Capcom adopted a lot of these material for Street Fighter 6. I hated that Street Fighter IV was set before III, but it gave the long time fans the characters they wanted. It paid off, so I can forgive Capcom for putting game play over story progression.
SF6 sucks, though. While it had some great ideas, the executions sucked.
Yea I think that's the very reason they did it. SF3 was just not popular yet and none of the new characters were major breakouts.
@@Kalebent The only big issue with sf6 is that it’s takes literally all of your money. But I’d still prefer sf6 over sf5 anytime
I totally understand that some ppl play for the story & lore, but I couldn't care less.
Nice to see that a lot of these ideas were still used in SFV and VI.
This is the type of idea that can kill a franchise because hardcore fans don’t like change.
It also sounds like Capcom was rather skeptical about this idea because they don’t want the franchise to end up like Final Fight: Streetwise.
I feel they gave this team “Super Street Fighter 2: HD” as some sort of recompense for the host of ideas Capcom used in the released “Street Fighter 4”. It’s nice to see the process behind the game creation. Thanks for another great video, mate, and have a happy Christmas!
I happy we got what we got, because between SFVs arcade mode and SF6 world tour, all of these ideas came to fruition! All except the flashback mechanic…. And thank goodness. Because that would have been terrible lol
You know what? I wasn't sold on the rewind mechanic when I heard of it before, never figured it would be fun or useful, but after hearing it could be blocked by a taunt? I feel that's a brilliant mechanic, maybe not for a rewind power but maybe like a defensive boost up or something. having to decide on the fly if your opponent was going to power up or not, choosing to setup for the next combo or taunt to drain his meter? There is a lot of depth there to work with.
Oh yeah, I remember reading about this years ago. I know, back when I had my own version of SF rolling around in my head, I had many of these ideas as well, so they weren't new or revolutionary. My idea for World Tour was different, though. Regardless, I'm surprised at how many of these ideas actually made it into SF6 18+ years later. Better late than never!
So much of this sounds like what's in Street Fighter 6.
They need to spin the block on this idea.
To be honest, this idea sounds interesting but also it sounds very experimental. Thus I'm glad that Capcom did what they did with Street Fighter 4. The only thing that sucks about it is the fact that it takes place BEFORE Street Fighter 3, which is raising a question: why call it Street Fighter 4 then? Other than that, I have no problems with Street Fighter 4. I still own original vanilla Street Fighter 4 from way back for PC, and I played all of the editions of Street Fighter 4 and it was fun. Heck, even Street Figher X Tekken was fun too. For me at least. Sucks that Capcom almost ruined Street Fighter with Street Fighter 5 later, and now they went cheap with Street Fighter 6 by just taking already established characters and remaking them to make a whole new characters out of them. You know, kinda like taking Abel and turning him in to that skinny Manon or turning Guy in to Kimberly, just to make "new" characters. What a stupid decision.
They actually said “what if we take Third Strike and make a sequel as soulless as possible?” and really nailed that aspect
and muscle buff all the character designs to attract new fans
100% agree
Street Fighter IV: Flashback would’ve been great as a 2004 PS2 and XBOX game sequel on the franchise's 15th anniversary and it competes against the other Top 4 such as Mortal Kombat Deception, Dead or Alive 3, Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution and 鉄拳TEKKEN 5. Because Capcom left a time-gap by making no entries to the franchise in 2000 - 2007 except 90s game re-releases (3rd Strike & Alpha Anthology) and crossovers (Street Fighter EX3 & Capcom Fighting Jam). Also, the final version of SFIV that we got in 2008 should’ve been called "Street Fighter Omega", because it doesn’t take place after 3rd Strike.
Appreciate your work in documenting SF’s history 🔥 SF6 is my first real fighting game. It and videos like yours have me so excited to learn about the titles that came before it!
So this SF4 Flashback is supposed to be SF6 kind of
I knew Thomas Grové in college. Good dude. Last time I talked to him was actually right after he left Backbone and I reached out to him because I saw his name in the credits of a few Backbone games. Anyway, the "e" at the end isn't silent. :)
I would like to see a renderer with brush effects like in the intro. And about Flashback I actually like Ryu's design.
This actually sounds like....SF...6 a little. Aside from the story. This shit is quite crazy. Exceptional vid brother Top hat.
I totally agree with the idea of making a Real Time Strategy Street Fighter game.
I’m interested
We did get SF 4 Flashback. It's called Street Fighter 6 and it rocks!! Exactly what I wanted the series to evolve to.
Is it just me or do a bunch of the stuff talked about here sound like things that ended up in SF6? I haven't gotten to play 6 or 4 for that matter but the features mentioned in this video sound like features I've heard about being in SF6. 😅👍
Because SF6's mechanics are all based on the last 4 Street Fighter games. Drive mechanics all trace their roots from the older games. Perfect Parry and Overdrive Specials are regular parrying and EX moves from 3, Drive Reversal is Alpha counter from the Alpha series, Drive Attack and Drive Rush is Focus Attack & FA-Dash Cancel from 4, Crush Counter is from 5.
Yeah, a lot of these ideas are now present in SFVI.
@@kwizzeh that makes sense.👍
Oh those long night benders practicing 1 frame combos with ibuki ❤️. Those were the days..
I’d actually be down to see this be a real thing.
Oh man..for real
Same. Even if not a main entry, even as just a spin off. From a narrative perspective, It would definitely clear up the messy story retcons from SF4, and fix up some of the issues in SF5's story. Could end with a real tie in to SF6.
@@siegfriedc2332 I think 4 takes before 3 or 5 takes before 3. I can’t even tell anymore with the timeline
@@locodesert2 Both 4 and 5 happen before 3.
@@siegfriedc2332 what about 6?
Aside from the "Flashback" mechanic itself, this seems pretty brilliant. I never jumped back in with SFIV or anything since. Alpha 3 was my last SF game I spent any time with, and might actually be my favorite. However, I think if they had put this out rather than what eventually surfaced as SFIV, I would definitely have gotten back on the train. All that game specific content PLUS the originals PLUS a remastered SSFII: TURBO? Bro. Yeah. I'm all in. In fact, I'm STILL all in. I'd buy this, full price, today.
You should try SF6, since a *lot* of these ideas (which, to be fair, largely weren't revolutionary when they were conceived in 2005 or whatever, far less for 2023 - they just happen to be a long list of "Good IDeas" that Capcom just needed to put effort into making, though SF6 goes well beyond what was presented here in many ways) have gone into SF6. Not the "FLashback" mechanic, though. Even when I read this new, I thought (and still think) that's a bad idea.
I would have love it
Thank you for emphasizing the "Dark Ages of Street Fighter". People acted like fighters didn't get released until SFIV, and it's so far from the truth. Thanks again!
No. Juri is my best friend's favorite Street Fighter character and among mine so I'm happy with what we got.
Street Fighter 4 restarted and brought the fighting genre back to life , Mortal Kombat followed its recipe once again and went to 2D or rather in modern times2.5D , Street fighter 2 started everything and when the genre started to die Street fighter 4 brought it back!
Interesting. Thanks for sharing. Not sure how this one would have worked out.
New video from the man who games while wearing a top hat. 🎩 🎮
Have a happy holidays
Sounds like World tour mode was implemented in SF6, but if this version of SFIV would to have dropped instead of what we got now I don't what the fan base would have thought of it? I personally do not like the simplified inputs only because I have been playing the games since the first one, but I can see that Cashcom was thinking of growing the game outside of the hardcord fans and gain money from the casual crowd.
You know this is kinda feels like lost media wish we could've gotten this version of Street Fighter IV instead it looks pretty dope but glad we got the version SFIV of we have today honestly would look different too if they had flashback as the main game
I want street Fighter 7 to be 2D with pixel art, however I want the pixel art to be completely unique and modern.
SF7 being 2D would be a downgrade, because they came a long way since 2008 in the 3D world just to compete with 鉄拳TEKKEN. The best way to do 2D is to reboot the classic titles like how they did with SFII.
2D would have to be a side series of some sort. 3D is too much of a selling point for competition.
Seems someone hasint heard of Kof13
WoW! Did Flashback ever actualy get made even as a test release? It sounds way better than SF4 even better than 6 currently.
It seems like Capcom borrowed Ideas from the Flashback Concept, & spread it to 4, 5, & 6.
As the little girl said in the commercial: "Porque no los dos?" ("Why not both?"
That SF4 sounds amazing Would’ve been one of the best FGs of all time 😊
I love the new Street Fighter but I seriously miss the old one with 2D illustration styles. I wish the new consoles can make the new Street Fighter and keep the 2d Illustration style, I think it will look great and that will bring back the real Street Fighter feel.
So much of this ended up being in 6.
The Street Fighter 4 that we got, ended up revitalizing the franchise, especially as it went on through different editions. A lot of the ideas for Street Fighter Flashback ended up in Street Fighter 5's later added arcade mode (past fights) and definitely in Street Fighter 6's world tour mode. (free roam with mini-games) The addition of different control schemes and playable older games ended up in Street Fighter 6 as well. So in the end, it all worked out.
Merry Christmas 🎄🎄😎👍
A Rewind mechanic that compliments taunts would be cool…
I would love this after street fighter six. With makoto grown up and with Yun and yang grown up as well as Sean
Glad we never got the flashback mechanic.
Street fighter 4 flashback was my childhood
I would have loved this aesthetics in the game, the characters actually look like they do in the Street Fighter 2 anime movie and thats awesome. Dont like the current 3D route all that much, miss the anime street fighter style. It's what birthed Marvel Vs Capcom and Darkstalkers. It makes sense why those two properties are never heard from for any upcoming projects. Although im sure Disney is full of bs when it comes to marvel that its better to not bother. I love Street Fighter 4 mechanics in general. Wish Flashback aesthetics would have been used on top of everything else Street Fighter 4. Whats cool is, looks like players woudl have been able to revisit and play a lot of iconic moments in street fighter history. Which actually would have been cool for a modern title to do. Because if you want to experience first hand Ryo vs Sagat moment you have to play through SF1 which is asking a lot from most people, but reliving them in a modern titles like SF4 would have been awesome catch up/introduction to core story beats of SF history.
Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition will always be peak Street Fighter to me. The HD rereleases of SF2 are the best post SF2CE games in my opinion.
It seems like SF4 wanted to be SF6 before SF6 was even a thing.
So…basically a proto-SF6 almost
I would've been happy if they have made street fighter III for Nintendo 64 and Gamecube
If they had release "Street Fighter 2 N64" version. it would've been rare.
still waiting for a review of Marshall Champion
11:10 *No.* Ryu still looks young when the 20-year-old Sakura comes back to train with him. But with *Street fighter 6* , that pursuit would make more sense, since he has grown a beard.
Sakura would be alot older in sf6 Timeframe
I've Wood head happy with anything, but the Prince of Persia like gameplay, is a little weird, but nice, change of pace.
4 was my favorite street fighter
Why not re-release it as a special fighting collection for those collectors out there?
They should do a street fighter like street fighter 2 , a anime street fighter like alpha and a street fighter ex like street fighter 4 in rotation.
I think the reason that I just didn’t go wild for SF3 was by that time I was tired of the SF shenanigans. Basically them triple dipping with their titles. It was okay with all the editions of SF2 because that was an arcade game and I loved the Alpha series because outside of console exclusives those games didn’t do it. With SF3 though people got the first edition, then were respected to get the second edition and finally the third. I felt that customers were getting burnt. As much as I liked SF4 I waited, I knew they would do the same thing all over again and they didn’t fail me, after multiple editions they released SF 4 Champion Edition.
SF4 is obviously what we needed but it would have been nice if they could've gone back and finished the Flashback game later.
Wait, WHAT? "Tony Jaa's Fighting Force"??
Right! I'm looking it up and I'm thinking "does he mean Core Designs's Fighting Force?"
We need them to bring out streetfighter 4 flash back
>they thought no one liked Twelve or Q >Q is *LITERALLY MY FAVORITE SF CHARACTER* of all time but let me explain >Twelve and Q are bottom tier >People who play 3rd Strike mostly play it competitively >Most people from a casual viewpoint like Twelve and especially Q, they're adorable >Me and like a thousand other people have wanted Q back since SFIV actually released >G was alright but Q was way cooler >I still need to know if Q was G or is somebody different >I literally only played G in 5 because he was the closest thing I was getting to Q in that game and if I didn't make it clear enough, I love Q >I play 3rd Strike competitively on Fightcade to this day >I literally main Q >Like seriously if I bring out Q I'm literally bringing out my best character >I run into other Q mains in the lobby all the time Capcom L, get better at recognizing your fanbase
Yes, I would have actually preferred it; but I would have taken away the flashback mechanic and made Ryu's present a good one instead of a dark one. Sakura looks cool as hell though, like SNK's Yuri Sakazaki.
That pretty much is Yuri's design except with gi pants. Pretty redundant given Makoto was in gi too. I keep realizing how many new characters SF introduces and they are gone right after. They have a horrible time while other fighting games can implement them long-term.
@@blumiu2426 agreed, we will never see El Fuerte again.
@@AmazingSpider-Man I don't think I know of any other fighting game that disposes of new characters as much as Street Fighter. I can't tell if they have a hard time making them stick or struggle creating memorable ones. Juri is Korean Chun-Li (though hard to see her as Korean) and a number of the poster new fem characters seem to be variants of her; they always have kicks as primary attack. I think only the Alpha series managed to keep the entire roster.
@@blumiu2426 The thing is that nowadays people expect every new entry in a fighting game series to present new characters and, in consequence, the people behind the games end up coming up with clones or crappy characters because they run out of ideas. By the way, did you notice that Juli, the former shadaloo doll and T. Hawk's wife in SF6, is Julia Chang from Tekken?. lol
Don’t worry, the game is actually available. It’s called street fighter 2 hd
Idk the rewind idea sounds kinda ridiculous 😂 you know it would've made people really mad
I would've preferred that they gave us SF4 with the USF4 roster and Flashback🎮
SFIV should come to Switch, in any way and any version (preferably Ultra).
So this is world tour mode in SF6
looks like lots of this content could have been paired with the 30th anniversary instead. Retracing all of the SF licence through Ryu's life story.
What a shame we didn't have this far more original game...
I just wish he was more clear on the roster
Fighting games fell into statis because online play wasn't responsive enough to really be a selling point. Capcom had to patiently wait until the technology caught up to meet their ambitions.
Street Fighter a necessity for gracious living! 🙂
I think if World Tour was in Street Fighter IV then Street V would have had sort of been like 6. I could be wrong though......
I'll pass on the rewind mechanic. It might have been fun as a separate game mode but I think it would've frusrrated and alienated the main player base and harmed the franchise's future if they would have incorporated that into the main gameplay. Even though the new storyline and vibe for Street Fighter 6 is lame, I do like that they let players choose between classic and simplified controls with the new mechanics to keep the competitive and OG players happy. Hopefully they keep that in mind if they ever make another Marvel VS Capcom title since the last one was utter 💩
Street fighter 6 has a very small character roster. Standard ca$hcom business practice.
SFIV actually made me lose all interest in Street Fighter. Didn't like how it played, the art style and it's clear they've not really been sure where to take the series besides multiple attempts to replace staple characters. Capcom had a similar initiative in the mid-2000s for the company when they were trying to Westernize, first started with Devil May Cry IV. That's not been Capcom's strength, but it is particularly struggling compared to other fighters. I feel Tekken will overshadow it and SNK is really impressive with what they are doing with KoF and will with Fatal Fury. I miss 2D fighters as they are faster and smoother, Tekken being the only one I think still dominates 3D, but Street Fighter is the one that feels sluggish comparing them with prior titles.
Flashback feels more like it would do well as a spin-off rather than a main game. Real shame it was never made but if it was my only piece of advice would be to make it an ancillary rather than the newest main offering of a long-runner.
I feel like this project was too ambitious at the time.
All's well ,that ends well IMO .I like what Capcom gave us!
If this was SFIV there'd be no SFV & more importantly, no SF6. It would've felt too much like another Capcom repackaging & rebrand cash grab to have found significant enough success to greenlight new sequel/canon projects in the series
This sounds like sf6
yeah flashback would have been way better. It seems Capcom copied a bunch of their ideas for SF6.
Focus Attack was introduced to the franchise in the EX series. It was an unblockable but you didn't absorb damage while doing it. Honestly would have been better timeline wise for 4 to be after 3. Seeing gray haired Ryu and Sakura with full gi was cool. Actually wouldn't mind if Sakura shows up in 6 with it. The flashback mechanic idea made a lightbulb go off in my head because League of Legends champion Ekko ultimate is literally that. He teleports back to the location he was 4 seconds ago and regains any health lost in that time.
It sounds to me that everything Flashback was trying to accomplish was achieved by the version of SF4 that we actually got. A deeper dive into the mythos, a new and exciting way to play while remaining faithful to the classics, familiar fight style, classic untampered character costumes, and move sets. Sf4 was every bit the love letter to the fans that I think Flashback wanted to be, and then some.
wow
So sfivFL=sf6 interesting
So it was basically sf6.
This sounds so much better than what we eventually got. What went wrong?
Flashback doesnt sound like a very fun mechanic.
ultra IV is the best
Flashback mechanics sound pretty swet..
Retro game for life! Fighting games have lost any sort of charm for me I would capcom to go back to 2D routes and reboot capcom Vs SNK
Flashback sounds distressingly annoying. Ultra combos were bad enough.
bruh ai thumbnail are you serious?
I’d take this over gummy fighter 6. Street fighter 4 was great the music was wonderful along while gummy fighter 6 sucks ass
Modern controls for the win. 🎉 Being able to do complicated inputs proves nothing. Congratulations you're just as good as 98% of the player base who didn't drop the game after the 1st month.
By that logic Gran Turismo should just put everything on autopilot. The challenge IS the game. Sounds like you just want a SF anime. They have that.
SSF4 was the best. Ultra ruined it.
I just want to say that I hate when they try to make Fighting Games easier. They aren't supposed to be easy. If you want to make more money, make the game a different genre.
Fo sho.
So you'd rather have your favorite franchise die vs being accessible? This is why we can't get a new Virtua Fighter 😂
@Jetanium If SF6 was just Modern Controls, I wouldn't play it. Like Project L, I lost interest in the game as soon as I found out it had no Motion Inputs. I don't like DBFZ simply because there isn't enough Motion Inputs.
@@condescending28 so instead of telling devs to change their genre if they feel like they want their fighting game to be easier, why don't YOU just play the older, more difficult titles. They won't stop working just because a new title came out.
@@condescending28 I think it's fair for dbfz because even though I don't play it, it looks REALLY fast paced and not very footsies based. Just what I think tho
I know creators are trying to hit a 10 minute. Minimum but do we really need three minutes of introduction?
Your hat is too big. A properly fitting hat would rest just ABOVE the tops of your ears. Unless you genuinely like the look/feel of having your hat fold your ears in half.
