I bought a proper race car! It was harder than I thought..
This video details the process of me buying a race car. There was a lot to research and understand, and maybe it was good I had to wait so long to sell my Sileighty, since it gave me plenty of time to be thorough. I’m beyond excited about the journey to come!
Some thanks and acknowledgements:
My family and friends, for listening to me ramble on about buying a race constantly for half a year.
My best friend Dave, for helping me prepare, and then accompanying me on a very long drive to pick up the car.
James, the seller of the red Williams prototype, for answering many questions when I thought this was the one. Unfortunately my driveway made it too hard.
Darren from the NSW Super Sport series, for answering questions on racing in that series.
Greg from the NSW FRCA, for being generous with his time in person at SMSP and answering many further questions in follow up communications.
Derek, seller of the yellow F1000 and co-founder of F1000 racing is Australia, for answering questions on his car and the F1000 category in general.

As a F1 fan I absolutely love this new channel. Can't wait to see the build and then in action.
I'm excited to drive it too.
After racing circuit boats for a number of years, I know 1st hand that any form of racing takes, dedication, patience, time, luck, friends and most of all money, most of those things I lost along the way. Cannot wait to see what you achieve with this pathway, and how you combine it with your love of 3D printed parts.
3d printed turbo charger coming up.
Looks like a fantastic purchase for the budget - your patience and careful research was well worth it.
I am pretty meticulous with that type of thing, but being forced to wait until the other car sold made me extra thorough.
I think I am living vicariously through you Michael. This was my dream many many years ago. Loved the postscript.
I've got a few post video clips like that rather than the same one on the main channel. Glad you liked it.
If distance and transport weren't an issue, I would have suggested a Formula Star Mazda from the early 2000s. They were powered by the Mazda Renesis engine (twin rotary) with 240bhp and high reliability. Most listed sell for less than your budget (US$25K).
Did I heard it right ? The driving experience was on your 40th birthday ? Hell that's some great genes !! Awesome car , have a long and fruitfull ownership !!!
Congrats and good luck!
Congrats and good luck.
Im absolutely excited to see your journey, hope everything goes well and get that race win
Great video, looking forward to seeing your racing progression
The journey video I didn't know I needed! Thanks for taking us along. Really cool!!
Congratulations I cant wait to watch the journey.
Congrats on getting your racecar! I can't wait to follow along on your journey !
That is really cool! Can't wait to follow your journey!
Congrats!! What a dream!! Can't wait to see it on the track!
I'm looking forward to this series, your style in your teaching tech channel is great and will transfer well. I appreciate you detailing the whole process, it's really interesting and often overlooked by other channels just focusing on the racing.
No wayyyy, congrats!! Cant wait on the upcoming videos!
This is amazing! Congrats dude, can't wait to see more!
Can’t wait to see more! Excellent documentation of the process
I recently came across your channel and watched this particular video, and it was quite an engaging experience. I'm looking forward to finishing the entire series of your race car videos, and indeed, you've gained a new subscribe
This is so cool, watching your channels is like looking into a mirror of everything I have visions and dreams of chasing. KZheadr, keen to share knowledge, having a racecar. Thanks for sharing! I'm very much enjoying the journey you're taking me on :)
Love this type of channel! subbed so I'm along for the ride.
i can already tell this will be one of my favourite channels to watch keep up the work
Best wishes for great racing.
cant wait to see the progress on the car and you as a driver
always been a fan of your 3d printing channel in depth, now racing evens better
This is very cool. I recently discovered f5000 vintage racing i wish i could do something like that here in the states. Congrats and godspeed on your journey
Excited that I’m here at the beginning. Can’t wait to watch your future developments 👍
Huge congrats mate. I learnt to drive circuits in my dad's historics, and have looked at the f1000 cars for about a decade - kids, surfing and work have held me back. These are the icon of fun open wheel - you've hit the jackpot I reckon. Keep us dreamers posted on how it all plays out! Hope to come and watch a race at SMSP really soon.
Well put together video!
Found this video really really fascinating, it was so great how you documented your whole process. As a British guy, I find it admirable the lengths you Aussies have to go for getting motorsport stuff😅. I'm lucky enough to be 15 minutes from donington park, and could get to most race tracks in England within 3 hours. When you said "it's in the same state as me, but over 200 miles away" I was baffled, I always forget how huge Australia is😂. I have nothing but respect for the journey you've gone on to get this car. I am incredibly excited to watch the rest of the videos on your racing journey, thank you for making this for us to watch😁
Europe (and particularly the UK) is definitely where it's at for motorsport. I'm roughly half way between Eastern Creek and Bathurst, with the newer Luddenham Raceway closer still. Not quite the same as you but plenty to keep me busy at the moment.
@robinthebobin6537 : There is a TV series called 'Outback Truckers' not too high on artistic merit, but it gives a very clear picture of the vastness of Australia, and how undeveloped the interior territories are. From a different point of view: I live in New Zealand, similar land area to the UK. When visiting relatives near London we quickly said 'Yes' when the offered to drive us back to our accommodation... after all, it would only be about a 30 minute drive (In NZ). When they dropped us off after a three and a half hour stop-start drive, we were very embarassed! NZ's total population is less than London's!
Well done !
I'm here to support you because a learned so much on your other channel. Can't wait for al the new content. Subcribed!
Been watching your main channel for a few years now and you've helped me out so much with my 3d printers. Can't wait to follow along with this new journey of yours!
Excited for you - this is off-the-charts cool! 🤩
Brilliant video mate
Yeah I'm in. Subbed and belled. Best of luck with your journey mate. I'm looking forward to seeing how you go.
You are hella underrated! Love the content! Keep this up and your gonna be the among the big ones.
Congrats, this has to be the dream of many Motorsport fans, can’t wait for more updates
So excited for you!
What a well done well thought out presentation. If this is how you roll I am in to follow your journey with the car. Good luck from Chicago USA, mate.
I am absolutely ready to follow this journey! This and your main channel fit my interests so well 👌 Good luck with everything! Shame about Danny Rics' broken wrist today. Greetings from the Netherlands!
Easily the coolest thing I've found and subbed to in ages
I've watched many of your TT videos over the years, being a sim racer and a general fan of motorsport, it will be fun to watch this channel as you progress. Cheers from Canada
Awesome! I'm newly interested in this sort of content, and in F1 and Indy Car racing. I've gotten back into Slot Cars.... after quite a long time messing with them as a Kid - and it has actually piqued my interest in this type of stuff! I loved this vid. So much fun, and so cool to see how you got into this situation. Can not wait to follow along with you on this journey, and see what you do with the car - and some cool racing fun! Awesome. And all the best with it - from the States.
Amazing looking car, can't wait to see your journey through the life of thee race car !
As allready said, I'm really excited to see and hear about the tech of the car. Also I think you'll be really happy with it, since you've put so much time and effort in choosing the car. I've bought an 325ti track car some years ago, without fully thinking it throught and even so it was very fun to drive, I've noticed pretty soon, that the car wasn't right for me - completly stripped without AC or Radio, running semislicks, 6-point harness and bucket seats. Driving it on curvy roads or track was loads of fun - getting there, not having a trailer, was exhausting at least... I wish you no trouble/crashes and instead a load of fun and will happily wait for the upcoming videos :)
Welcome to the club. Learn a lot from your 3d printing channel, so look forward to watching you progress. This is my 25th year competing in sports cars so happy to help with any questions on racing :-)
8:15 i really enjoyed exploring your brain’s thought process and the step by step ideas you had to fit your problem priorities and criteria
Great video and channel! Lovely to find someone with the same JDM and Racing addiction. Subscribed and excited about the progress with your new car :)
Congratulations on your purchase. This car looks like a blast.
Awesome car congrats!! Hope to see more videos of it being turned into an absolute machine on the race track.
Loved this.
Looks like a great buy, looking forward to seeing you take it for a drive.
Glad I got here early. Looking forward to watching this journey. I'm from a dirt racing family in Kentucky and I'm just starting to enter the world of sim racing.
Great video. Keep them coming
This brought back memories from my 2nd race car, a Ralt RT5 I bought in 1982. That thing looked like it was home sitting in my garage. I'm going to subscribe to see what you do with yours. Have fun.
Nice. Great video!
Congrats on achieving the step of your happiness.
Nice one Michael, I discovered your other channel having discovered that 3DP is now properly accessible to the layman. I come from a background as a motorsports design engineer, so my experience with SLA and SLS was just designing parts that were handed over to the RP boys, who made them. You've helped loads with your site and it seems to have gone full circle with you getting a formula car. This is great, if I can be of any help at all, just shout. Can't wait to see this channel unfold and see how you get on. Keep it on the black stuff :) Ade
This was really informative. I'm in Canada so it would be a bit different but sharing the steps was very informative. I hope to do the same in a year time. Thank you!
Always good to have a Dave-O to road trip with!
living the dream man! Nice racecar! Looking forward to seeing it run!
So excited to see more videos! I’m so jealous! Wish we had more open wheel leagues/clubs in the west coast of ‘murica
This is such an interesting video. Truel well done. Cheers mate
good god im jealous, enjoy it man, hope it gives you a lot of fun
loved this video!
subscribing cuz i cant wait to see this journey!!
Congratulations! That will be a ton of fun to drive and race! I went with a SR3XX, but without the ability to remove the front splitter it requires 10 feet of ramp and 4 huge boards to load it into my enclosed trailer, so not exactly convenient 😅 But sure is a blast to drive!
Best of luck with the car from everyone here in Pennsylvania. Glad you got an open wheel car as that form of racing is the best and most interesting. (Super cars are pretty cool, too).
Great idea, Michael and congrat's on the purchase. I've just been through the same decision and bought a 1000cc Ya-Car Cross Kart with broadly the same specification as you had. It should arrive later this year so I'll be doing a few track days to shake it down. If you're interested in catching up at one and doing a bit of a comparison then drop me a line. Cheers, Rob
An F1000 is a lot of car for your first openwheel race car probably a FF or F4 would have been the better choice when starting out. But atleast you bought the slowest F1000 (Speads) an aero brick in a class that was highlighted by some radical aero choices (see JDR). Your first 3D printing project for the car should be new smaller side pods as the frontal area on those cars was huge! Good luck and if you do feel like the car is too much dont be afraid to sell it and move down a class or two no sense ending up driving a fast car at only 30% vs a slower car at closer to 100%
I’ve been going through this process off and on for a couple years. I even went out and saw that yellow F1000 in WA. The car I ended up buying was a Tarmac Rally car and is an absolute dud. After it’s fully sorted (as I don’t intend to pass on a problem) I’ll sell it and I’ll be back in the market for an open wheeler. Wish I’d gone that way first time. Look forward to following your journey.
So awesome. I'm excited to see what engineering grade 3D printed mods are made for it. 🏁
Big congrats. Nothing is better than single seater racings. Enjoy.
I’m so glad KZhead recommended this channel to me 🙏🙏
It's absolutely fantastic in this day and age to find a down to earth person like this who has made and still makes great well thought out decissions about making his passion come through. I can only imagine the feeling of racing a liteweight open wheeler, the lack of inertia and fantastic feeling of race suspension. The closest I've gotten was in a Lotus street car 10 years ago. After that I dreamed of designing and building a liteweight Porsche 909 Bergspyder like car with an Audi TT 1.8T midmounted drivetrain but that's for my next life ha ha.
Watching this made me realise how great it is living in the UK. Just looked on Racecars Direct, and found around 6 cars that would have fitted your criteria. F1000 Jedis, a 900cc Speads (very similar to what you got), a carbon tub Mygale, and an older Ralt F2000 Toms Toyota.
She's a beauty mate I hope you have many happy days at the track with her
Subscribed for more, looking forward to learning with you.
bro, i can see it infront of me how fkn super stoked and lyrical you mustve been when rolling it into the garage! Such an awesome feeling, rolling a new vehicle into ur garage!!!
looking forward to you going through all the ins and out of the car, this was a great video to start the journey!
That video is ready to go for next week. I've currently got all the bodywork off fitting some updated parts.
I watched the whole thing convinced i'd seen you somewhere before, it wasn't until the very end that i realised i'd watched a load of your stuff a couple of years ago when i was shopping for a 3d printer... not sure i have the budget to follow in your footsteps on this one though :D
You only need one kidney..
Love the video, enjoy the car, I enjoyed the little homage to Senna as he's my countryman.
I have followed Teaching Tech for years, never know you do motorsport!!! 3D printing and Race car what more can you ask?! Very excited to follow this channel as well. In the US there is another series call Thunder Roadster, they are very affordable. I am supiried that there is no similar in Australia.
Goody goody... and it is a PROPER race car. Not hobbled by production car engine / trans / suspension etc. Nice choice Michael! 👍 Liked and Subscribed.
Well I'm here for the long hawl! Let's go!
Please Document as much as possible. As an F1 fan this is kind of a childhood dream for me !!
When you said "for my 40th birthday" I couldn't believe it! You don't look a day over 28, good for you mate!
dude you are so underrated! i hope you do a livery on this!
Very entertaining video on how to transition into open wheel racing!
So cool. I wish the US/Canada had more of this kind of stuff. Not many leagues like this here or even vehicles.
As far as looks go, you made a great choice. The body style is modern and doesn’t look amateur.
New subscriber here. This is amazing, great work. I hope to be following in your footsteps within a few short years as I’m interested in giving a formula car a run
A man of the people
Really nice vid ! Subbed
A 3D printing long time subscriber here. I think we had the same itch to scratch... but my only realistic option nowadays is getting into karting! It's a work in progress right now. Take care and greetings from Spain!
Loved the video bro, topped off with a rough paraphrasing of one of the greats hahaha
Super excited to follow you on this channel. Love your other channel as well. I do carbon and aero parts so feel free to reach out with any questions.
More videos please!
