How Diversity Became a Dirty Word in Corporate America

From the US Supreme Court ruling ending affirmative action in college admissions to the controversy surrounding Claudine Gay’s ouster from Harvard, backlash to diversity, equity and inclusion is on the rise. Right-wing figures like Elon Musk and Stephen Miller are leading an “anti-woke” charge that threatens to undo gains made by people of color in the wake of George Floyd’s murder and the Black Lives Matter protests. The Fearless Fund, a venture capital firm helping women of color, is one of the latest targets of litigation.

    • Characterizing this only as an attack by conservatives is a little disingenuous. I'm a democrat and personally, I think DEI has made a caricature of itself, resulting or at the very least contributing to its own demise. If you've taken any mandatory corporate DEI training, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

    • An ideal example of diversity in a workplace, according to my studies in America, would be to hire locals or those educated with their respective fields; you wouldn't put some person born and raised in London in charge of managing Chinese workplaces, you would put someone in charge that knows the culture or grew up there. Diversity tends to be take to the extreme, reduced to a mere check box to appease onlookers at the cost of business performance.

  • I support inclusion and equality. No one should be locked out of a political system or lose opportunity due to skin color in America. However, it is time to be honest here. I grew up in a city and certain ethnic groups worked hard even at very young ages to position themselves for career success and I mean some worked very hard. Other ethnic groups did not place the same value on education. The members of that second ethic group who chose to put in the work were rewarded with a career. Sometimes just analyzing lagging data places too much blame. There are a lot of factors for why numbers appear the way they do that extend beyond racism.

    • Lets be all the way honest..... Most ethnic groups did have to deal with laws specifically targeting them and locking them out of economic opportunity. America never dealt with that and the historic impacts economically still show today and why so called DEI programs existed in the first place. America has never been accountable. Cant say pull yourself up by your bootstraps and a ppl do so and then you move the goal post. I would implore anyone to read "The color of Law" book by Richard Rothsetin.... that's damage only one ethnic group in this country has faced. Further more, when an ethnic group places education at the forefront after building up schools they couldn't get in (Harvard, UGA, UNC, Georgetown and on and on..), they started their own schools and of course the funding wasn't equal (Jim Crow). So much that is not taught (see ron Desantis rules on teaching history, Murica) and then you have these narratives.... Interesting..

Because DEI - as it has been implemented in many businesses - has done nothing but force managers to hire and promote, not the best overall candidate for a role, but the best from some filtered list. Prime example: 0:35 - explaining this as anything but racism is impossible. Its pretty sad (and ironic?) that DEI has been separated out rather than being an inherent concept in US business culture. Not sure how to fix the issues we have, but the way DEI has been implemented is the problem, not DEI itself.

You don't need a video to spoon feed or answer your questions (or some AI bot). Then, you can spend 2-3 min on the official US census page figuring out how they aggregated their data.

Whites are 76% of the population and holds 74% of top job, while blacks are 13% of population but holds 6% of the top job, meanwhile asians holds 14% of top job with 6% of population... So does this mean we should fire Asians and give the top jobs to blacks and Hispanics and also based on that argument, we should also increase 2% for whites if it's based on population senses... It simply doesn't make sense, and this is totally a bs vid

Midway through the race, the white runner realized that breaking the colored runner’s leg at the start was bad, so now the white runner considers the colored runner their equal with equal rights and opportunities. The issue with the white runner’s way of thinking is that the colored runner still has a broken leg. The two runners are not equal. The colored runner’s leg must be healed to truly make the race equal. However, the white runner believes that is unfair since they themselves are not getting their perfectly fine leg healed… Go figure

  • Meritocracy is important and certain quotas may not be the effective to get the most talented people from a society in the academic or work places they need to be BUT is funny how people in the US uses meritocracy as an excuse to attack policies that avoid segregation and exclusion in a country that was one of the 5 states in the whole world with a barbaric active apartheid in the last 100 years (The others were Germany with moustache man, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe). Those policies are still affecting people today and would probably will in the next generation…

  • "The stats in the area of funding for black women and women of color are alarming. Women of color combined, black and brown, receive 0.39% of venture capital funds." "That is disturbing when women of color make up 20% of the population." I'm not a math genius, but 20% of the population does not mean that all said 20% of the population is in business, or has a business plan that requires VC funding, or gets to present it to a venture capital firm, or gets approved, or requires a number that makes a bigger dent on all total VC funding. It's simply not how the math works. One cannot just expect VC firms to chase people who never applied for VC funding and give them VC funds, without their need fitting criteria, just because they are exactly 20% of the population. To affect a change in these numbers, it will help to start training black and brown women who are in business (perhaps a small portion of that 20%) to learn how to seek said funding and get approved for it. Am I wrong?

  • as an asian its hard to agree with DEIS that perpetuate a stigma that barr asian americans from entering workforce/ education based on meritocracy to incorporate other minorities; however, it is also hard to say that meritocracy is what drives the american hiring process. Most, if not all jobs that are high level are all referral based. This is hard for african americans and others to get these jobs as they werent allow to get that head start in the first place unlike their white counterparts. This is also true for asians but at a lesser level - the 13% of asians being managerial despite being only 6% of general population perpetuates this referral based rather than meritocracy based.

At the same time i want to adress that diversity implies some level of separation which at least from my values offends the american constitution. Another point is we need to guarantee equal rights and freedom for all citizens and furthermore humans in general. But please dont make a fuss out of every single bullsh*** just because of some academic policy discussions while the reality of alot of people is completely different to the privileged college life.

  • Diversity on itself is dirty. The fact that we have to focus on it is totally wrong. The focus is now not on what people want but to just impose it on people. Thats wat "woke" does. For example: Women in general are more caring then men and men are mostly more materialistic. When a couple (man and woman) get a child. Instictively the couple chooses that the woman takes care while the man works. The woman mostly consents to this. A job as top manager/CEO requires a full track record, a tough skin and a lot of time. Stuff that mostly men are interested in. Most women who want to go for those jobs are women who show masculine traits and not the feminine traits. This is because those jobs are just not alligned to feminine traits. Just like working in construction where 98% is men. In construction the traits are visibly shown where as in top manager jobs they are not shown. The goal of reaching 50% men and women in the top manager job is not representing the needs and wants from men and women. You cant assume that women want to be in those positions just as men want it. Thats just naive. Also, why focus on the differences between gender/ethnicity? Focussing on the differences is like a wedge between groups. Its sets people against eachother. The focus should be on educating people on integrity, general respect no matter who is in front of you. Thats what matters! Not "black lives matter", not "feminism matter". Only EVERYONE matters.
