I was a target of this kind of scam, and instead of accepting their friend request, I just went directly to Steam Support and said "Hey, someone claims they accidentally reported me, is this true?" and they said "Nah it's a scam lmao."

this happened to me because they said someone else they meant to report had my same steam name. so i looked it up and i'm the only one with that name 💀 i only had like 3 games i didn't care about as well so it was just comedic

Same, bout 2-3 years ago. They must have hacked a friend I had on steam, and messaged me the same thing. The broken english wasn't a red flag, since I have steam friends from all over and 99% of them, I haven't talked to in years. They were telling me that I would be vac banned, and I said, no worries, I haven't played cs in years anyway. But, being really persistent, it got to the point where they tried to send me to a "steam moderator" with the kid from the movie "up" as the profile pic. I laughed so hard.

Even if this happens, at all, whatsoever, Steam will send you an email instead of a discord message because they're a company. You may send an appeal via email to the appeal team or whatever but never have to add someone on discord to "notify of the error".
Ive never been actually been targeted by a scam before and this was my first one. At first I didn't even realize it was a scam, i simply thought the person was an idiot and did not bother to take them seriously and they stopped trying very quickly lol

Bro, a Steam scam was the first time I ever got actually scammed too and I will make sure that will be the last ever time I got scammed. I didn't do the final step of this scam since I was required to use a credit card to buy this thing on G2 or smth and I used my father's without his permission (go ahead and say I'm a bad son) and I fell for this scam because this was my first time experiencing a Steam scam on Discord and I was fucking desperate to save my Steam account (which I barely used at that point) in case I needed it for the future.
I just blocked them and reported them right away for scamming and then I told them okay your scammer there's no way that this actually happened I told them even if it did my dad works at valve so he could unban me😂😂😂
I got scammed by this actually. Not with the certificate of eligibility but with the Steam support message. I didn’t look too closely at it at first. So it was easy for them to take it. Steam took action within a few hours while discord support took closer to a week. He had gotten my steam and discord accounts. He wanted money through some TF2 trading site. I gave him the login knowing I’d be able to get it back just to see how far he would go. He was impersonating a Rick Johnson. After some further research, Rick Johnson had left the company back in 2011 I believe. To start a VR company. Steam support is amazing. Props to them. Discord Support needs a bit of work. In the end I got both accounts as expected

I unfortunately fell for this scam last year and I was stupid enough to send a screenshot of my bank statement (I know, I'm an idiot... luckily my banking info was not compromised) to "steam support." After realizing what had happened, I instantly submitted a steam support request explaining the situation and I got the account back in like 12 hours. Thank you, Valve! (Like legitimately other companies need to learn from how amazing Steam Support is at these things). Discord, on the other hand, took days to respond to my report of the scammers only to say that they couldn't do anything such as banning the accounts or whatever... discord, step it up.

I got one of these scams a while ago. I didn't know the exact mechanism but I assumed they would do something along the lines of getting me to give a code from Steam Guard. Was very funny watching the scammer stumble along why Steam wouldn't just contact me at my email which they already had. It got even worse when I asked why discord specifically. Off-platform administrative contact should be a huge red flag.
Remember if this happens to you just send them a link to your choice of a job recruitment site so you can help them be better off

One key thing to watch out for is urgency. The whole "Do this now or we'll take legal action", or "act in 15 minutes or your email will get terminated" (That one actually got sent to me recently). If you see a fierce time limit before something bad happens pop out of nowhere, there is a high chance that it's a scam

Yep. If that existed for an actual service, something as simple as being in a different time zone, or daring to not look at your email every 30 seconds, would cause problems.
yeah, steam support isn't gonna be like: "GIVE US YOUR LOGIN INFO NOW OR YOU WILL DIE AND EVERYONE WILL DIEEE!!!" scammers use this sense of urgency to deter critical thinking, if they put a time limit on it, then you'll be less likely to really look into it and be skeptical, because you'll (or at least they want you to) be panicked.
This happened to me a couple weeks ago. I just spent a couple hours trying to reason with him why such a situation would never exist. Didn't play along in the slightest, yet he always replied.
I had this happen when two of my friends got hacked, then it spread through my friends list like wildfire. I knew it was a scam from the start and, of course, tried to annoy the scammers, but I ended up with like 8 people on my friends list telling me they had accidentally reported my account before making the connection I was the same person 💀
I love these types of scammers, whenever I get contacted by them and I have free time, I like to do a little bit of trolling, get them to click links, send them discord crashing videos, rhino poop gifs etc etc.

Honestly I just reply to these scams with "So why am I not banned yet?" followed by some random assortment of slurs or swears and wait for them to either get pissed off or block me.

I actually did fall for this. This was the first "scam" dm I really ever got on discord. Thankfully, steam was smart to allow you to recover your account through your last used credit card, so they didn't have a lot of time to do anything. Thankfully, that was the best experience I could have had. Now, whenever I get a random DM I am immediately suspicous and will prolly play around until I need to give info.

Same here. Well, I had few other scam messages about stuff like "Free Nitro!" which are obviously scams. But this one was one I never suspected to be a scam until it was too late. Actually, I partially did suspect it but it was the fear and intimidation that made me fall deeper into the hole. Luckily, I recovered my account and got my refunds through official support services.
Literally this happened to me and after a bit of conversation, I sent him one picture from a google search telling: "Steam doesn't use Discord and won't contact you under any circumstances", and then he blocked me.

I once fell for this scam over a year ago, but instead of some random person on Discord DMing me, it was one of my friends on Steam who I actually knew, at first I was curious why he was messaging me on Steam rather than Discord, but I thought he was trustworthy so I continued, the same exact stuff happened in the video, "contact mod on Discord" and so on, it was until that I logged out of my Steam and messaged him on Discord that I realized his Steam account was hacked, so I told the "mod" to go away and contacted Steam support. Got my account back thankfully, but I genuinely feel bad for those who lost so much because of these scammers. Edit: I was approached by a friend on Discord that I completely forgot about (roughly a month prior to making this comment), they also said the exact same thing about accidentally reporting you instead of someone else, I just told them to go away as well, and after calling them out on their scam, they just stopped messaging me altogether.
The steam thing happened to me. If an account gets hacked they message people on their friends list, essentially turning that account into a catalyst for the scam
I got hit by this too a while back, I managed to waste over an hour of their time, I was streaming the whole convo to three friends on discord and they each took turns telling me what ridiculous bs I should reply next, that laugh made my day, I love messing with these single digit IQ scammers it's so entertaining

I fell for this back when it was first starting up before it got onto discord. Luckily, I'm a boring guy who plays Call to Arms and simulator games, so I dont have anything valuable, and steam support got my account back right away. Crazy to think this is still going around 4 years later.

This actually happened to me a few days ago. Someone claimed I bought a $400 CS:GO item (however I don't even play the game). I showed them proof I didn't buy it, but they kept on pushing even after I caught them in the act. I eventually reported the hacked account and the culprit to Discord and Valve.

I got sick of the scam, and so I changed my "intro" on steam to point out that by linking my profile to me, you outed yourself as a scammer. Was hilarious when they linked it, saw the embed calling them a scammer and instantly cut the scam off
Had this happen to me today. Ad soon as he said to open up purchase history, I knew it was a scam. Toyed around with him for a while before I reported him lol. He stole a certificate from another scammer under “Rudesby”. I’m probably going to have to wait for like a week for discord to ban him but steam might be a bit quicker. Hilarious watching the scammer do something he thinks he knows but doesn’t. Good vid

I've always found myself pretty smart when it comes to detecting scams, and while I would never have gotten to the point where I show my purchase history, I did learn from this video that the purchase history can be used to recover your account. I love how those kinds of scams wouldn't even work on me, because even if I fell for it I'd be convinced valve wouldn't act on the report since there's zero proof of any wrongdoing on my account and the last time I traded was like half a decade ago when I had someone gift me cards to complete badges for games I liked.

The triple-quote is meant for programming languages i.e. ```py print("hi") ``` I assume he talks with it because it has association with programming languages. So I knew it was a scam immediately since Steam would never do anything through a 3rd party. I did also decide to check with friends to be 200% sure, and they were also sure and I just closed the DM's. Had no idea it was this funny and wen't so far lmao.

I remember the first time I got this on steam back in like 2015. It was even weirder when I got the same exact scam, same script, same everything on discord. I remember it got so bad on discord I ended up changing my bio into something along the lines of "I'm not brain dead, scam someone else"
Ive had a couple accounts try to use this scam against me. only steam scam I've fallen for was the old "Download this image and see what items id like to trade" the file extension was ".scr" so I figured it was just a weird image format double clicked(Pretty sure .scr files are just exe or msi files but microsoft made the file type for screensavers for some reason) and all my items were gone. to be fair I was young when it happened but even at the time I knew not to run random shit. Steam support banned the accounts involved and gave me my items back all within 2 weeks so cant really complain to much.
Same happened to me like half a year ago. When the scammer told me to send the screenshots (6:30) I was already aware that I was being scammed. So as "proof" I painted a little "F*ck off" image in paint, uploaded it in a cloud and created a Grabify link to it. The scammer wasn't very happy when I send him his location. I was sure that it was a scam when suddenly the apparent Admin showed that he had very specific knowledge about the conversation which I had with the guy who "accidentally" reported my profile while this guy assured me he hadn't contacted the admin yet.
Back in October of 2021, I never knew that this was the steam scam after I had the messages. After concern and still following through the whole process for the sake of it, it had been a traumatizing moment, and due to that scam and lose a lot of money. I've grown extra cautious more than ever

Lost 5 years worth of work on my old youtube, as well as all my steam, blizzard, bethesda, playstation, epic games and ubisoft games, my discord, my second channel and all my pictures from the past 7 years. All just gone. I'm glad you were able to avoid losing your stuff. The person doing this deserve to get stuck in traffic while going to their bodypillow wedding. Absolute no life. I hate scammers. my friend got a scam like this a couple nights around christmas, and we were on a call talking about it while he DMed the scammers. stupid reddit addicts who still llive in their mothers' basement! best way to handle these scammers are to tell them to frick off and block them, then email steam support! good video man, keep up the good work
THIS is why if someone adds you as a friend, the first thing you do is: 1. Check if they have a badge 2. Check when they made their Discord account If you see some bullshit like it was made a month ago, just don't answer them, or turn off messages from randoms.

recently made accounts always sends a red flag, and also your friend's account can also be hijacked by the scammer to send these types of messages as well, so scepticism is always a useful tool.
One of them used someone else's stolen account though, so watch out for that

I actually worked for valve for a few years before dropping out of the games industry. I got one of these messages, ran the guy around in circles, then sent him a picture of me and my coworkers by the valve in the lobby.
I sadly am a victim of this scam and it was not only stressing me out 24/7 causing me not being able to sleep and getting worse grades at school but also it messed up my family because of the loss we made. He went on and asked for more and more money, I was convinced that he was a supporter because he banned me on steam. I lost a total of over 400 euros and my dad over 1100 euros. I really wish nobody else to suffer from this like I do. I don't know what to do and I'm at my dark times. My scammer was a real pro and convincing.

When they asked me to log out of Steam I was like "Ok thats sus as f*dge" and looked up steam scams and this was the first to show up! Now I know to never share personal information with others ever again!
Something similar happened to me a couple years back. It wasn't over discord, but steam and very nearly got me. An old friend of mine i hadn't talked to in a while message me out of the blue with the whole "I reported you" scam. Thankfully he got his account back before curiosity got the better of me and all the scammers managed to do was reconnect me and an old friend. Thanks scammers, you made my day.

I get these scams from time to time. Everytime they ask me "is this your profile" with my linked steam account, I claim that the account is not mine. They then spend wasted time trying to prove to me that the steam account linked to my discord must be mine. "Thats not me" is the best response to these scams.
CS:GO Nerd here: the trading history shown at roughly 3:05 is actually not too bad of a deal for the butterfly knife, however the gloves below the latest trade are actually rather bad, with roughly $700 lost. The other two are just plain normal.

Though less common, this scam may be executed entirely via Steam chat, without switching to Discord. They will however always try to switch to Discord when the scam is initiated on Steam. They get a lot of targetted victims from unmoderated Steam groups/chat (Valve/Steam won't close these groups). With this scam-type, i'm very sad so many contend creators & helpful Ppl on Steam itself overlook the fact that this scam is initiated on Steam just as well as on Discord.

I literally got this scam sent to me and while eating I decided to watch some of you No text to speech and wow u made me confident in them scamming i sent him your video and he immediately removed me as a friend on dc and said he would force start a process lol and all the steps you go over was the same as mine! this JUST happened to me. im so hyperaware of things like this. i saw it a mile out as soon as i was added by the person. but i was pretty impressed by how good of a job the scammer did. as soon as i sent him a screenshot of his process (this is a widely known scam) he immediatly blocked me
Someone just tried this to me and took all of reading the first picture saying to talk to someone on discord to realize it was BS. Nice to see this to verify that.

I was hit by this a few months ago, but it was the most obvious scam bait I had ever seen. I played around with them for a little while, but was being really passive aggressive the whole time. He tried to claim that he lost about $600 and I was like "yeah, not my problem". Honestly, if you fall for something like this, you're super gullible and have zero sense of self awareness.

Was a moderator of a discord server a few years back and a kid from our server got scammed with this method; We did spend some time until we managed to get his money back, did not think we even been able to do so
Honesty, I wish I saw this video a month ago, thankfully, I have recovered my steam account a couple weeks ago thanks to a friend but also thanks for the helpful advice
Exactly this happened to me a few months ago, before this video was made. I was put in touch with a "moderator", who made me keep purchasing Steam gift cards. I lost about £500, and revealed sensitive details (he also made me share my screen). It all seemed legit at the time, but in retrospect it was obviously a scam from the word go. I'm still kicking myself for falling for it.
The horrible English (combined with the fact that I just watched your video on Mert) meant that by the time of the certificate, I felt like it made perfect sense.
This happened to me earlier today. thank goodness I have a friend who had the same thing happen to them and was also free at the time.
This has happened to me 3 times, just by random accounts that are in the same server as me, I almost fell for it the first time, but realized it, the second 2 times I knew and just blocked them as soon as they sent me the "Is this your account?" message with the picture of my account.
Sad thing is, sometimes they actually have people that actually speak decent english doing this. I almost lost my account this way. I got to the confirmations part and declined it realizing how sketchy that was (especially since the confirmations page often doesn't even show what you are confirming, or at least didn't at the time). Who ever was talking to me had spoken very good english. They spoke so well I didn't even realize it was actually a sham until it was almost too late. They went full bore, the one they impersonated was actually a real (active) steam moderator. It wasn't until I looked at my account activity and saw they were trying to log into it that finally snapped me out of it and made me realize what was actually going on. Now it's not even steam scams, it's now just people saying they do art n stuff adding people at random on discord, saying basically "BUY FROM ME, NOW". On top of that, of course, all the art they show is often not even the same style and clearly stolen from someone else.
This happened to me and I forever hate who ever did this to me and you don't want to what will happen if I ever find them and I will never forgive and never forget.
I almost fell for this scam on steam but my brother saw a subreddit about steam scams and told me so he saved my account. now i go around and help out others before they get scammed
