John lives life on the road, roaming from place to place with his wagon and horses, battling to keep to the nomadic ways of the past. Never a long way from trouble, John clashes with some angry locals and faces accusations of trespassing as he tries to find his ideal spot and when the authorities finally catch up with him, there’s an unexpected twist in the tale.
In Dorset Romany Gypsy Lee Hughes plies his trade filing down horses’ teeth, and in traveller circles is known as the Horse Dentist. Lee’s a legend in his own community, but money is tight, so Lee devises a plan to expand his business by tapping into the lucrative market for treating racehorses.
A rich client base is on offer but confronted with a powerful racehorse with a bad case of toothache, Lee needs to be on top of his game to impress the client and take a big step closer to his dream.

  • I was brought up next to a gypsy site, unfortunately my thoughts about gypsies are compared to this!. They eventually broke up and left, the cleanup crew went in. One of my friends dad was part of the crew.His findings led him to a breakdown,he discovered children buried on the site as well as human waste mounded as high as himself together with animal remains and their excrement.These memories remain 40 years later, and whilst friends and family are struggling to make ends meet ,we still remain humane!

    • They should not - and these are a minority case, thankfully... but unfortunately they are making such a bad name for the rest! That even 1-5% of the UK traveller population may be like this is sad as it is though! I just remind myself that these are the "bad eggs" who are abusing their freedoms and being disrespectful to the land and neighbors, making it more difficult for the rest. Reality TV likes to spotlight those kind, because they're far more entertaining to watch 😆 It's not discrimination to want people who ruin the land and neighbourhood to be chased off... If they were polite, respectful, quiet neighbors who didn't leave feces and trash and destroy public property, I'm sure they'd be welcome enough. Big yike!

Sadly that is not usually the case A farmer we knew had to fork out £30k after an entire tribe broke the lock on the gate and entered one of his big fields and it took quite a while to have them evicted which also meant he could not use that field. • Growing up in the 70's, I had a horse in a paddock in the suburbs in Melbourne Australia. One day the horse got an injury and Dad said to bring it home to our backyard so we could tend to the injuries. The horse got so tame he pinched apples from the open kitchen window and tried to get on the sun lounge with us. We were in a middle class suburb, the neighbours did not complain, rather they all loved having the horse in the street. We used to take it for walks with others that had dogs. Dad even came home one day to see the horse being taken out of the house via the front door! People just smiled. Yes it was strange. There was no problem until the horse healed up and then wanted to run around a bit more. By then he was well enough to go back to his bigger paddock. Storm remained a favourite pet in the street. We used to bring him home weekly for a wash and brush and even a ride around the suburb. Everyone knew him. No one complained except Dad. His lawn suffered but we were having fun so that was ok.

They're a much maligned people, but not without SOME justification to the people that have been used or disturbed because of the actions of a small % of that minority population. There's a large negative sentiment in the country underpinning the communities affected by these families of travellers who are destructive like this. It keeps policies from passing that could aid the traveller people as a whole, because they've alienated the people who make the policies and vote on laws and things by leaving the destruction and filth in their wake for others to clean. Unfortunately, if you're going to abuse the use of the area, and inconvenience the people who are the ones needed to agree for the change to ever happen... it won't happen. People will not side with your cause if you are troubling to them, and leaving feces, trash and WORSE (there've been some stories from awhile ago about bodies being found in the wreckage of children and animals), in the wake of your camps comings and goings. A year on and they’ve expanded, built a fence, managed to get the school bus to stop at their site, and are now getting Mail delivered there. It’s completely unbelievable how people can just ‘claim’ land that isn’t theirs, illegally cut down a bunch of trees and build a fence, and be allowed to live there! I am not prejudiced towards any groups as every person is their own and people shouldn’t be stereotyped together however it does seem unfortunately common that more often than not, traveler groups cause a lot of trouble.

  • I’d say most people have issues with travellers because they pay nothing into the system but expect to get everything out of it. We pay taxes for local services and education, plus National Insurance for National Health Service. They want all that for free & they get it because they work for cash in hand deliberately so they can keep every penny. That’s the main issue, alongside them leaving the areas the live as an absolute 💩 hole. Rats all over the place too. I have plenty of experience with this. Also in my experience, the travellers aren’t the ones being bullied in school, it’s the opposite way round.

  • In the US this is called “van life” or living nomadic. But there is also a fine line between living nomadic and being homeless. The trash, human waste and drugs is that fine line for us here. But even those with $150,000 Sprinters and rvs get push back too. Trailer parks and campgrounds provide these services. There are also dump stations in every county. Burning trash is not okay in a neighborhood or at all. If you live rural you can burn wood and piles during approved days. I’m a rule follower because I’m black. Lots of these rules are made to discriminate, but many are made to keep things clean and keep of home values for those who own homes. Which housing prices and mean residents have made impossible. I get both sides. We have to respect cultures and learn to communicate. Not always ask if some is against the law.

    @shorteelan@shorteelan5 ай бұрын

      @Sar-ahG@Sar-ahG5 ай бұрын
    • Travellers are totally unrelated to people who are living ‘van life’. In Britain & Ireland; travellers are recognised as an ethnic minority group, distinct from the local/ native population. A low intellect attempt at metaphor might go like this: Van life folks are like me with a sun tan, the tan will fade if I don’t sunbathe periodically… a sun tan doesn’t turn me from a European Celt into a ‘person of colour’… my tan is really just cosmetic…. I wasn’t born with it and it’s a choice, temporary by nature. Being born a traveller is NOT a temporary or cosmetic thing. Just like every human ever born- nobody gets to choose what nationality, religion or ethnicity they are born into. We just adapt and grow into our surroundings and culture. There are lots of Irish Travellers in the US. Some live on big sites that are like small towns. Some families are wealthy and run successful businesses. Can’t think of the title but a YT search for ‘ Irish Travellers in America ‘ should find it. Very interesting documentary, made around 2010 if memory serves me. British production documentary called ‘ my big fat gypsy wedding ‘ is another good program. Well worth a watch if you find traveller documentaries interesting.

Many have been inspired to go "off grid" ..Vans converted to tiny homes (save on rent/first time buyer difficulties) Go on youtube and see the comments section for these lifestyles, inspiring recycling, grow your own on the move etc. Some home school their children. Good old fashioned caravan holidays (nod to the 70,s) gives the "gorger" a sound idea of the daily needs for caravan living.. Retro caravans are a thing now- bow tops too, evolved into "glamping". Down sizing to "tiny eco homes" for those with more pennies. Some of those are on wheels. Gypsies are off griders. Inside their caravans = spotless.. They have toilets but strictly used for storage only. So many youtube vids showing sites before, during and after occupation- the costs of clean ups !! Even if they want to- land owners have no incentive to "help" gypsy travellers for the same reason. Rather the further expense of boulders or fencing to keep them out. Gaslighting us into believing its discrimination? That is offensive to me, cant speak for anyone else. Sorry, rant over.

Maybe if they started by asking land owners and local government to establish a few places for the gypsies/travelers to go in exchange for them agreeing to call ahead and let the appropriate party know they plan to stop in. Whoever is charged as being a contact will give the travelers/gypsies written paperwork clearly describing the dos and donts expected for free access to the land. Once that's done they would be able to establish the individuals responsible for the problems and start charging them a security deposit. It sounds like a lot to do but they have an awful lot to do now anyway. It seems like it's worth trying in the hope that it may make things easier and much more pleasant for both sides. Thank you for sharing and God bless. 😊❤️

  • Folks should live and let live 🙏 it's their life " when we were kiddies in southminster Essex there was a traveler family. We never thought nothing off it. They lived in the caravan or a trailer. No big deal We was all kids together. Going to schools, getting educated and enjoy going round their friends with their trailers. As long as we had the courtesy to take off our shoes when stepped in there's something incredible warmth of a traveler, family warming and comforting in their surroundings. People in today's world are being nasty. Just live and let live. They're not doing you. No harm. They're not coming in between your four walls. They're not hurting you. They just want their own lives so let them live it

    • I live next door to a gypsy family, they are filthy. Back garden covered in dog excrement because dogs left there 24/7. Black bin bags in front garden full of food waste, child's nappies, drink cans etc.

  • In the USA at campgrounds there are waste stations to empty out your sewage before you leave. Why hasn't England put these type of waste stations all over the country for the gypsies to use? They could charge for this service and eliminate the excrement problem. I'm sure they could develop similar areas for waste disposal. I believe people feel it isn't fair they stay for free and don't pay property taxes or maintenance. They stay on private lands destroying the surface and leaving waste for for the city to clear up. As for the horse, as adorable as he is a private residential neighborhood isn't zoned for farm animals. The horse poop smells and draws in horse flies. Where does he put the poop every day? Where is he going to exercise it? And will he pick up the poop the horse leaves on their walks?

    • There are the same facilities in the UK. Thousands of campsites but travellers don't use them as they have to pay! There is no property taxes to pay in the UK either.

    • @@wullymc1 Wow. That is interesting info. That puts a whole new spin on things. No excuse if waste stations are available. Nothing is free in this world. And no property taxes??? Lucky, lucky.

  • From Canada. We love UK with all our hearts. Countries that take care of there own ! Health care paid through taxes ! If USA had that they would be golden ! Its so expensive in USA for health care its just "sick".

  • ..my 2 cents? - travellers sure don't help themselves, leaving a right mess behind them - may not be all travellers, all the time but it only takes some, some of the time .. ❤ 🙏🏽

  • If they took their rubbish away n tried to get on with people, maybe they'll get more support. Trashing land is costing a fortune to clear.

  • The comment she made about the travellers must have faced discrimination, that’s why they left it a mess with human feces was definitely not my experience. Worked in a pub and they welcomed the travellers in large group maybe 20+, only pub in the area to actually let them in not make up some excuse. Let’s say we got rewarded with shit all up the restroom walls and smudged all in the carpet outside the restroom! Safe to say I didn’t clean that shit no way lol.
