The Blue Devils won their third consecutive ACC Men's Basketball Tournament with a 79-53 victory over the Tar Heels. Duke would go on to win the NCAA Championship less than a month later. The 26-point margin of victory is the second largest margin of victory in a championship game in ACC Men's Basketball Tournament history. The two teams split their matchups in the regular season and shared the ACC regular title crown, but UNC came into the ACC Tournament as the 1-seed and Duke was the 2-seed. Shane Battier was named ACC Tournament MVP and scored 20 points in the championship game. Mike Dunleavy was the Blue Devils high-scorer with 24 points. Joseph Forte was the Tar Heel leading scorer with 14 points.

  • I was at this game. I went in thinking I could halfway root for Duke if they weren't playing the Tarheels. I left with a searing hatred for the Duke basketball team.

  • 3 different players come down and hit a 3 in a row or Duke. As a Duke fan, I miss having a truly balanced team.

  • I truly enjoyed every second of this old school classic and watching Matt Doherty sweating and clueless getting schooled by the goat!

  • Barely even tried to score the last 13 minutes of the game and still won by 26. I remember this game well though not for the beat down Duke handed unc but for my concern about JWill being ok and of course hoping he and Boozer could play in the ncaa tournament, we all know how that story ended in 2001 with #3🏆🏀😁

    • Players were all strong and conditioned - a lot of ‘softer’ players in this generation literally & figuratively

    • No, u got the definition of disrespect wrong! The definition of disrespect was the callous undercut at the knees that the Tar Holes and Hubert Davis gave when their collective arrogance turned down the NIT this past season because Carolina thought they were too holier than thou to accept! The fact they determined the NIT was beneath them was a true definition of disrespect because that is something not even Roy Williams or Dean Smith would have done! In fact if memory serves me right, neither of them turned down the NIT when they we're offered bids
