Mystery Mould No.53 : What is inside?

This is the series where I reveal what is inside these pottery moulds I found on Gumtree.
To check out the Mouldy Bisquits DIY Pottery Painting kits head to
www.mouldybisquits.com.au
The story goes, I found a listing on gumtree for pottery stuff. When I arrived the seller said 'I have all these pottery moulds would you like them as well?' and I said 'why not'. On the way home, I had the brain child to do a social media video series revealing what each mould is.
The mystery is in the fact that I had no idea what I had said yes to, some of the moulds are labelled and easy to tell but some of them are a little more difficult. The beauty is that all of the plaster moulds surprise you no matter the presentation of labels, titles or identifiable surface inside.
So come join me as I dive into this series and share the mould fun. I would love to hear any information you may have on the moulds and to let me know any stories you have that the moulds remind you of in the comments.
Don't forget to like, comment and subscribe!
Heaps of love,
Shelby

  • The 'stand' part that you're missing is extra fins which lean the fish forward a bit more keeping the tail off the table.

  • Its so interesting how different adults interpret different childrens books. I didnt encounter the rainbow fish until I was an adult and its horrible to me - like the message is give pieces of yourself away, whatever makes you special, so that other people will be happy and like you. Its right up there with the Giving Tree in terms of WTF for me. But I can also totally see your perspective of wanting to share your creativity to bring happiness. I think maybe its partly bc its the fish's literal body parts that it feels so weird to me? Idk. Unrelated, the fish mold is beautiful and your work, as always, is lovely. Ive never seen that gold luster before and holy cow. Amazing.

    • My husband and I laugh about how The Rainbow Fish seems like a Communist propaganda book. I agree that it's right up there with The Giving tree on the weirdness scale for books.

    • You're not alone. It didn't _hurt_ me as a child but I did think it was strange and sounded painful. I think I was a little older so I understood the message wasn't meant to be literal, but I thought the other fish were very selfish for demanding things that were not their own. I'm studying to be a teacher and I think if the book comes up in the classroom I'm going to ask the kids to consider other angles, try to guide them to think a bit more critically about it. But I've heard other creative adults talk about how it sort of fed into their self esteem issues and how they always had so much demanded of them until they were burnt out. If I could rewrite the story - the Rainbow Fish was admired by others, but found they didn't enjoy their scales alone, and through their own choice decided to share them so they could see that shine in others. It aligns with Shelby's vision of the story too I think.

    • There is an alternate ending that can be found online, "The Rainbow Fish Keeps His Scales" by Topher Payne. Instead of giving away his scales, the rainbow fish points out how each of the other fish has their own unique traits that already makes them special.

  • For the mother of pearl luster, I think you have put it on too thick and from what I remember my teacher always had us use cotton swabs and apply in circular motions careful not to be too be to uniform in your motions and only go over an area once especially after it starts getting sticky. I remember using it a few times and always loved the results.

  • The message in Rainbow fish was a product of it's time. I see what the book is trying to say but I can see the darkness in how it says it too. There is the story about sharing things you have that others don't that is positive, there is the aspect of sharing of yourself but not to the extent you lose yourself (keeping some for yourself ie a scale). But this only works if you equate the scales with clothing, money or unique talents that can be shared with others. These are all things you can choose to keep for yourself but may find yourself richer for sharing. The problem is scales are part of a fish's body and that outward beauty of that body is used as the point of difference and that muddies the story. If you view scales as part of the fish and not clothing there is the underlying message that you need to mute your beauty or give bits of you away to be accepted. There is also the element of the other fish only be willing to be friends if they get something from the Rainbow fish that is disturbing and sends more mixed messages. So I totally see both interpretations in the same story. I remember that mixed messages like that were quite common in the 90's and being told to be less you in effort to fit in was a common theme. I think there is a bigger goldfish mold as well? I think I remember seeing one that was bigger that looked about the same but I am not sure. Your interpretation turned out lovely. I love watching your artwork.

    @KyChimerical@KyChimerical2 жыл бұрын
    • This is the best deconstruction of these themes I have read in the comments so far. I was always on the side of it being about sharing what make each person great so every person becomes a little better and brighter and never took it as dulling one persons shine. Reading these comments it absolutely makes sense but was never the message we were taught or what I took from it 🥺 it is rather dark. It leads a little bit into society and how we take something wonderful and pull it a part until there is nothing really left just because we don’t accept it or we have selfish individual needs. It’s kind of really sad when you think of it like that in terms of the environment, shining stars, different cultures, people with unique talents. Thank you so much for doing such a clear and concise analysis of both sides of this story! I really appreciate it and since doing this video it has really changed I have seen the messaging from this children’s book 🥺

      @ShelbySherritt@ShelbySherritt2 жыл бұрын
    • I never read the book, but enjoyed reading the comments. Should a child’s book be that inscrutable, I wonder? It’s really good to re-examine one’s beliefs or interpretations. Not everybody is willing to or capable of doing that. I have a simple example: grow where you are planted. So ubiquitous, but it’s only sometimes good advice for flowers. WTH would a girl/woman grow where SHE WAS planted? I think: grow wherever you want. It’s amazing how these ideas get planted. Ha!

      @maramakesjournals2319@maramakesjournals23192 жыл бұрын
  • It's been a long time since I read that book but I don't remember it being about sharing at all? Lol maybe I'm just remembering it wrong but I remember that the fish kept giving its scales to the other fish because of how mean they were to the rainbow fish out of jealousy and then the fish is bare at the end and I thought I was about not changing who you are just because other people don't like you or to get people to like you. Either way so nostalgic I love this peice 💛

    @StarIshvalda@StarIshvalda2 жыл бұрын
  • I also remember listening to teachers read the rainbow fish and seeing it at school during reading week in elementary school (primary school) and maybe what I took out of it was sad a little bit but looking back on a lot of 90s classics they all seam really sad. The rainbow fish kind of had this underlying message that if you don't change for others and give them everything of yourself then you will always be lonely. Maybe that is a little bit dark and heavy of a meaning, but I am still unlearning that message that I always had to be selfless and giving and that I wasn't aloud to just be myself with people without judgement. I like your message a lot better and I'm glad that sharing with this community brings you joy.

    @herothebard@herothebard2 жыл бұрын
    • Oh gosh that is so dark! I totally get it though! It’s like giving your light to others because others are jealous of your sunshine only to lose what makes you special 😭🥺 that’s so sad!! I always saw it as a special skill that the fish shared with their friends so everyone could use that skill, at first the fish is outcast but as it shares what makes them different to others, the others share the joy and acceptance for what makes that fish different. It could be either really dark or a really nice message depending on how you look at it 🥺

      @ShelbySherritt@ShelbySherritt2 жыл бұрын
    • This is the meaning I always took from that book too - I’m a preschool teacher and I refuse to read that book to my class as I always thought it was morbid 😳

      @erinspahn7124@erinspahn71242 жыл бұрын
    • That's how I saw it! I knew it was meant to be about sharing, but it made me so angry because the fish literally gives away pieces of itself. It teaches kids to make yourself less to please others.

    • I always thought the message behind the Rainbow fish was really sad too. I always thought the message was really selfish. Why can't we just appreciate the beauty of the fish without "owning" a piece of him. Maybe its also a metaphor for the environment? who knows?

    @jenbarnard2686@jenbarnard2686 Жыл бұрын
  • Mother of Pearl goes white and chalky when it’s a little too thick. I have been using it and other lusters/fired metallics for about 30 years and this is across the board, every manufacturer I’ve ever encountered. We own a studio now in Nevada, USA and still use it pretty frequently. Gold and lusters are easily contaminated too, so if you aren’t using a dedicated brush for each gold/luster that has never been used for painting before you may find other problems with those products. We also use essence to clean our brushes to avoid the contamination, especially with the gold. That stuff is expensive here in the states, lol.

  • I looked up the mother of pearl luster directions and fell down a rabbit hole of forums. Some said it needed to be fired at a lower temperature than the gold luster. Then another said it should be applied lightly or slightly diluted. Cone 20 seemed to be the general consensus as opposed to the 16-18 for gold. It seems quite a few people ended up with the same problem as you did. But continue please because the result is stunning! And mix the bottle well before application. Great job! 👏

    • I went down the same rabbit hole! Given it was my first time I followed the recommended cone from the site I bought it from! The thing is, I am not sure what I should be expecting because this doesn't look like snot like they said in the forums but it also isn't very punchy and super shimmery! So I am so unsure and a lot of other photos of the lustre show a variety of different glazes it has gone on top of which could also impact it! I think I might try the Cone 020 now I have tested the gold lustre temp! Thank you so much! I definitely have to keep playing but I am really hoping I can get some good results soon!

(I looked around quick and can't see what the other part would be. Everything showing the mold and the fish show them as is, even if it says the mold is a Set. My guess is it might be a second fish, because everything has the fish set on a surface like you have it.) You decorated them so beautifully! I recognize the fish, but never knew the story. Must have become popular after I was out of Elementary school or something. The big book at the time was The Very Hungry Catepillar.
